Sick animals generally behave differently than healthy individuals by, for example, being less active and exploratory. How an individual responds to illness is also likely to be mediated by the individual's age because age will dictate the individual's ability to fight a challenge. To date, empirical research on sickness behaviour has focused on the population-level average effect of ill health on behaviour.

The garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) is a fat-storing mammal that undergoes annual periods of hibernation to mitigate the effects of food scarcity, low ambient temperatures, and reduced photoperiod that characterize winter. Like other hibernating species, this animal suppresses its metabolic rate by downregulating nonessential genes and processes in order to prolong available energy stores and limit waste accumulation throughout the season. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, single-stranded, noncoding RNAs that bind to mRNA and mediate post-transcriptional suppression, making miRNA ideal for modulating widespread changes in gene expression, including global downregulation typified by metabolic rate depression.

In this contribution, doping of oriented thin films is investigated for three PBTTT polymers bearing different side chains including linear alkyl ─(CH)─H, single ether ─(CH)─O─(CH)─H and alkyl-siloxane ─(CH)─(Si(CH)O)─Si(CH) A combination of transmission electron microscopy, polarized UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and transport measurements helps uncover the essential role of the chemical nature of side chains on the efficacy of the doping and on the resulting thermoelectric performances in oriented PBTTT films. Siloxane side chains help to reach record alignment level of PBTTT with dichroic ratio beyond 50 for an optimized rubbing temperature but they impede effective doping of PBTTT crystals with FTCNNQ, resulting in very poor TE properties. By contrast, doping the amorphous phase of all three PBTTTs with magic blue (MB) results in excellent TE performances.

The application of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) for cell and tissue analysis requires a comprehensive understanding of their interactions with biological entities to prevent toxicity or harmful effects. Whereas most studies focus on cancer cells, this work addresses non-cancerous cells with their regular in vitro physiology. Since it is generally accepted that surface chemistry largely determines biocompatibility in general and uptake of nanomaterials in particular, two bilayer surface coatings with different surface shielding properties have been studied: (i) a phospholipid bilayer membrane (PLM) and (ii) an amphiphilic polymer (AP).

We investigate the driven-dissipative dynamics of multilevel atomic arrays interacting via dipolar interactions at subwavelength spacings. Unlike two-level atoms in the weakly excited regime, multilevel atoms can become strongly entangled. The entanglement manifests as the growth of spin waves in the ground-state manifold and survives after turning off the drive.

Creativity gain or drain: The dual association between boundary-spanning and creativity.

Acta Psychol (Amst)

December 2024

School of Business, Maynooth University, Ireland; Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Católica Porto Business School, Research Centre in Management and Economics, Portugal. Electronic address:

Boundary-spanning behavior, which involves building relationships with external entities to achieve organizational goals, has been highlighted as a key mechanism for enhancing the inflow of external knowledge. While boundary-spanning can fuel creativity by providing employees with new resources, ideas, and inspiration, it also poses challenges, potentially depleting resources and inducing stress that hinders creativity. Drawing on Conservation of Resources (COR) Theory, this paper explores the dual impact of boundary-spanning on employee creativity-serving both as a facilitator and inhibitor.

SurgiTrack: Fine-grained multi-class multi-tool tracking in surgical videos.

Med Image Anal

December 2024

University of Strasbourg, CAMMA, ICube, CNRS, INSERM, France; IHU Strasbourg, Strasbourg, France.

Accurate tool tracking is essential for the success of computer-assisted intervention. Previous efforts often modeled tool trajectories rigidly, overlooking the dynamic nature of surgical procedures, especially tracking scenarios like out-of-body and out-of-camera views. Addressing this limitation, the new CholecTrack20 dataset provides detailed labels that account for multiple tool trajectories in three perspectives: (1) intraoperative, (2) intracorporeal, and (3) visibility, representing the different types of temporal duration of tool tracks.
