Anisogamy and the Darwin-Bateman paradigm.

Evol Lett

December 2024

CEFE, University of Montpellier, CNRS, EPHE, IRD, Montpellier, France.

The Darwin-Bateman paradigm advanced as the central concept to explain the evolutionary origin of sex differences. However, debates regarding its theoretical underpinnings persist, particularly with respect to the role of anisogamy in sexual selection. The theoretical work presented by Lehtonen and Parker suggests that the initial split in gamete production rate drives sex differences in sexual selection but that any further variation in the degree of anisogamy is not expected to alter the strength of sexual selection in males and females.

Partitioning and transmutation are important strategies for closing the nuclear fuel cycle. The diglycolamide extractant TODGA has played a major role in the development of solvent extraction processes for nuclear fuel reprocessing due to its good extraction performance, its hydrolytic and radiolytic stability, and its compliance with the CHON principle. However, due to drawbacks such as the tendency to form a third phase during extraction if no phase modifiers are used, continued research on diglycolamide-type extractants has led to the development of diglycolamides with decreased symmetry.

Detecting fast-ripples on both micro- and macro-electrodes in epilepsy: A wavelet-based CNN detector.

J Neurosci Methods

December 2024

Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile, (ENAC), Toulouse 31300, France. Electronic address:

Background: Fast-ripples (FR) are short (∼10 ms) high-frequency oscillations (HFO) between 200 and 600 Hz that are helpful in epilepsy to identify the epileptogenic zone. Our aim is to propose a new method to detect FR that had to be efficient for intracerebral EEG (iEEG) recorded from both usual clinical macro-contacts (millimeter scale) and microwires (micrometer scale).

New Method: Step 1 of the detection method is based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained using a large database of > 11,000 FR recorded from the iEEG of 38 patients with epilepsy from both macro-contacts and microwires.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is one of the main vector-borne zoonotic diseases that affects a wide range of ruminants and humans in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.Several techniques involving cell culture and molecular biology methods have been developed to diagnose RVF infection. Success partly relies on sending samples to a national or reference laboratory in good conditions and having the capacity to perform the appropriate diagnostic test in the matrix of interest during the period of viremia where high loads of viral particles are present.

Peroxisomes are underappreciated organelles hijacked by viruses.

Trends Cell Biol

December 2024

University of Montpellier, CNRS, Institut de Recherche en Infectiologie de Montpellier (IRIM), Montpellier, France. Electronic address:

Peroxisomes are cellular organelles that are crucial for metabolism, stress responses, and healthy aging. They have recently come to be considered as important mediators of the immune response during viral infections. Consequently, various viruses target peroxisomes for the purpose of hijacking either their biogenesis or their functions, as a means of replicating efficiently, making this a compelling research area.

Non-genetic information can be inherited across generations in a process known as transgenerational epigenetic inheritance (TEI). In Drosophila, hemizygosity of the Fab-7 regulatory element triggers inheritance of the histone mark H3K27me3 at a homologous locus on another chromosome, resulting in heritable epigenetic differences in eye color. Here, by mutating transcription factor binding sites within the Fab-7 element, we demonstrate the importance of the proteins pleiohomeotic and GAGA factor in the establishment and maintenance of TEI.

Bursts of brain erosion: seizures and age-dependent neurological vulnerability.

Trends Mol Med

December 2024

Institute of Functional Genomics, University of Montpellier, CNRS, INSERM, Montpellier, France. Electronic address:

Hypersynchronous and exaggerated neuronal firing, exemplified by epileptiform activity and seizures, are disruptors of brain function across acute and chronic neuropathological conditions. Here, we focus on how seizure activity, whether as a primary symptom or a secondary comorbid event within a complex pathological setting, adversely impacts neurological trajectories. We discuss experimental and clinical evidence illustrating the participation of neurodegenerative and senescence-like adaptations.

Guangdong Key Lab of Geodynamics and Geohazards, School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Sun Yat-sen University, Zhuhai 519082, China; Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Zhuhai), Zhuhai 519082, China. Electronic address:

Previous studies have advanced our understanding of paleoclimate features and dynamics in East Asia, particularly within the East Asian monsoon domain (EAMD) since the last glacial period. However, a lack of quantitative reconstructions in the boundary area between tropical and subtropical zones has largely hindered our spatial comprehension of the relationship between precipitation and temperature throughout the EAMD. In this study, we present a continuous pollen record from the Pearl River delta over the past 13.
