Background: Hatch weight (HW) affects broiler growth and low HW (LHW) often leads to suboptimal performance. Sodium butyrate (SB) has been shown to promote growth through enhanced intestinal health. This study investigated how broilers with different HW responded to in ovo SB injection and whether SB could enhance gut health and performance in LHW chicks.

Swine enteric coronaviruses pose a significant challenge to the global pig industry, inflicting severe diarrhea and high mortality rates among piglets, and resulting in substantial economic losses. In our clinical practice, we observed that the addition of potassium molybdate (PM) to the feed could dramatically reduce diarrhea and diarrhea-related mortality in piglets. However, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive and merit further investigation.

Background: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has faced emerging infectious diseases such as Ebola, Mpox and Yellow fever, and antimicrobial resistance is a growing concern. To address these issues, in 2011 the country embarked on implementing the One Health (OH) approach at the national and provincial levels. This study investigates OH institutionalization and implementation in the DRC, describes the process of OH decentralization, and identifies the opportunities and challenges of sustaining these efforts.

Objective: Since the habituation deficit of evoked potentials could be related to abnormal thalamocortical drive, we searched for a modulatory effect of ketogenic diet (KD) on somatosensory-evoked thalamo-cortical activity. KD is effective in preventing migraine. Previous studies showed that KD normalises habituation of somatosensory and visual cortical evoked responses in parallel with a decrease in of migraine attack frequency.

Previous studies have found associations between exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and cardiovascular risk factors. However, the internal dose of PAH exposure was often examined by quantifying monohydroxylated metabolites of PAHs (OH-PAHs) in urine, which can only reflect recent exposure. On the other hand, hair covers wider temporal windows than urine and has been demonstrated to be a suitable matrix for PAH exposure assessment.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, has been shown to increase exercise performance in strength and cycling studies but its effects on running endurance remain unclear. The objectives of this randomized sham-controlled crossover trial were to assess tDCS efficacy on submaximal treadmill running time to exhaustion (TTE). Forty-five healthy male runners aged between 18 and 32 years (mean maximal oxygen consumption: 46.

Background: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) have immunomodulatory and hematopoiesis-supporting properties that could potentially benefit hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) engraftment and decrease the incidence and/or severity of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).
Methods: Based on our previous pilot study, we established a multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blind trial evaluating the efficacy of co-infusing third-party MSC (1.5-3 × 10/kg) versus placebo on the day of HSC transplantation (HCT) to prevent GVHD in recipients of HLA-mismatched unrelated donors after reduced-intensity conditioning.

Background: Apomorphine is a dopaminergic candidate therapy to improve recovery in patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (PDoC). Behavioural improvements were previously described in non-controlled case series, but its efficacy and neural mechanisms remain largely unknown. This open-label controlled study using multimodal outcome measures investigates the action of apomorphine in severely brain-injured patients.

We evaluated the prevalence of serum and meningeal cryptococcosis in asymptomatic outpatients with advanced HIV disease (CD4 < 200 cells/mm3) in a cross-sectional screening context in Kinshasa clinics (DRC). Lumbar puncture (LP) was performed in patients with positive serum cryptococcal antigen (CrAg) test, and Cryptococcus spp. isolated from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were identified by MALDI-TOF-MS, and characterized using serotyping-PCR, ITS-sequencing and multilocus sequence typing (MLST).

Background: While levodopa may benefit some patients with monogenic Parkinson's Disease and parkinsonism, others may exhibit aberrant responses earlier after exposure. Reporting treatment responses in rare genetic parkinsonism will help tailor therapeutic approaches to specific patients subpopulations.
Case Report: We report the therapeutic response in a patient with X-linked parkinsonism, who exhibited motor and non-motor complications within a few months of Levodopa.

Superconductors play a crucial role in the advancement of high-field electromagnets. Unfortunately, their performance can be compromised by thermomagnetic instabilities, wherein the interplay of rapid magnetic and slow heat diffusion can result in catastrophic flux jumps, eventually leading to irreversible damage. This issue has long plagued high-J NbSn wires at the core of high-field magnets.

Purpose: Survivors of childhood cancer can suffer from long-term sequelae or decline in quality of life (QoL), for which careful and standardized selection of outcome measures become more important. This study aims to assess different QoL-related outcomes using three distinct questionnaires in an international study, identify the priorities of childhood ALL survivors via the administered questionnaires, and investigate potential interrelationships among QoL domains across the questionnaires.
Methods: Childhood ALL survivors treated according to the EORTC CLG treatment protocols 58741, 58831/2, and 58881 were recruited in Belgium and France and answered self-report QoL questionnaires, including the Short-Form Health Survey 12 (SF12), the Quality-of-Life Systemic Inventory (QLSI), and the Impact of Cancer for Childhood Cancer Survivors (IOC-CS).

Digital twins represent a key technology for precision health. Medical digital twins consist of computational models that represent the health state of individual patients over time, enabling optimal therapeutics and forecasting patient prognosis. Many health conditions involve the immune system, so it is crucial to include its key features when designing medical digital twins.

Background: Asthma is associated with accelerated rate of FEV decline.
Objective: To determine predictive factors associated with accelerated FEV decline in adult asthma and evaluate sputum cytokines as potential biomarkers for airflow decline.
Methods: We recruited 125 asthmatics evaluated at the asthma clinic of Liège and reevaluated them at least 5 years later.

Stride velocity 95th centile (SV95C) is a wearable-derived endpoint representing the 5% fastest strides taken during everyday living. In July 2023, SV95C received European Medicines Agency (EMA) qualification for use as a primary endpoint in trials of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) aged ≥ 4 years-becoming the first digital endpoint to receive such qualification. We present the data supporting this qualification, providing insights into the evidentiary basis of qualification as a digital clinical outcome assessment.

Aims: The world experienced a huge number of outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in birds, which could represent one of the largest registered epidemics of infectious disease in food-producing animals. Therefore, mammals, including humans, are continuously exposed to HPAI viruses leading to sporadic and sometimes unusual mammal infections. The aim of this paper is to assess the risk of crossing the avian/mammalian species barrier by the currently circulating HPAI viruses, focusing on the epidemiological situation of Belgium, a representative country for Western Europe.

Background: Clinical risk factors of deficient immune responses to COVID-19 mRNA vaccination in SARS-CoV-2 naive hemodialysis recipients (HDR) have already been identified. Clinical factors influencing hybrid immunity induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination in HDR have not been reported.
Methods: A comprehensive analysis of antibody (Ab) and T cell responses to two doses of BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination was performed in 103 HDR, including 75 SARS-CoV-2 naive and 28 experienced patients, and in 106 healthy controls (HC) not undergoing HD, including 40 SARS-CoV-2 naive and 66 experienced subjects.
