Lung cancer (LC) is a leading cause of global cancer-related deaths, highlighting the development of innovative methods for biomarker detection improving the early diagnostics. microRNAs (miRs) alterations are known to be involved in the initiation and progression of human cancers and can act as biomarkers for diagnostics and treatment. Herein, we develop the application of molecular beacon (MB) technology to monitor miR-155-3p expression in human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells without complementary DNA synthesis, amplification, or expensive reagents.

Introduction: The research in consumer neuroscience has identified computational methods, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, as a significant frontier for advancement. Previously, we utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) to model brain processes related to brand preferences in a paradigm exempted from motor actions. In the current study, we revisit this data, introducing recent advancements in explainable artificial intelligence (xAI) to gain insights into this domain.

Circulating miRNA-21 is an innovative biomarker for cardiovascular events in erectile dysfunction patients.

Front Cardiovasc Med

March 2024

Pharmacogenetic Unit, Clinical Pharmacology Department, Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL), Dr. Balmis General University Hospital, Alicante, Spain.

Introduction: It is well-known that circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) play a relevant role in many kinds of diseases by regulating the expression of genes involved in various pathophysiologic processes, including erectile dysfunction (ED) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the miRNA-21 profile in the blood samples of patients with ED, CVD, and the combination of both pathologies to elucidate the potential function of miRNA-21.

Methods: A total of 45 patients with CVD and/or who underwent the erectile function test were included and divided into the following categories: CVD with ED (cases, = 29) and controls (= 16) with either ED or CVD.

Article Synopsis
  • The OpenWMB is a new, open-source, automated working memory (WM) battery that includes seven tasks from three different cognitive paradigms, addressing the limitations of existing paid programs.
  • It is freely accessible online, available in English and Portuguese, and includes a data processing script for statistical analysis, with the Portuguese version showing good psychometric properties.
  • The study found that heterogeneous WMC factors (from tasks across different paradigms) offer the most accurate estimates of working memory capacity when compared to fluid intelligence correlations.

Tangential velocity constraint for orbital maneuvers with Theory of Functional Connections.

Sci Rep

March 2024

CFisUC, Departamento de Física, Universidade de Coimbra, 3004-516, Coimbra, Portugal.

Maneuvering a spacecraft in the cislunar space is a complex problem, since it is highly perturbed by the gravitational influence of both the Earth and the Moon, and possibly also the Sun. Trajectories minimizing the needed fuel are generally preferred in order to decrease the mass of the payload. A classical method to constrain maneuvers is mathematically modeling them using the Two Point Boundary Value Problem (TPBVP), defining spacecraft positions at the start and end of the trajectory.

In arterial hypertension, the dysregulation of several metabolic pathways is closely associated with chronic immune imbalance and inflammation progression. With time, these disturbances lead to the development of progressive disease and end-organ involvement. However, the influence of cholecalciferol on metabolic pathways as a possible mechanism of its immunomodulatory activity in obesity-related hypertension is not known.

Age-Related Changes in Clinical and Analytical Variables in Chronic Hemodialyzed Patients.

Int J Mol Sci

March 2024

UCIBIO-Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit, Laboratory of Biochemistry, Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, 4050-313 Porto, Portugal.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the increasing number of older adults undergoing chronic hemodialysis and examines how various clinical and analytical biomarkers change with age in these patients.
  • The research included 289 end-stage renal disease patients, with a mean age of 68.7 years, revealing significant differences in biomarkers between those under 65 and those 65 and older.
  • Key findings showed that older patients had lower diastolic blood pressure, phosphorus, and creatinine levels, but higher levels of inflammatory and cardiac markers, indicating complex interactions between aging and chronic kidney disease.

J Clin Med

March 2024

Faculty of Health Sciences, Universidade da Beira Interior, 6201-001 Covilhã, Portugal.

This study investigates the relationship between sleep patterns and ischemic stroke beyond the predominant focus on obstructive sleep apnea. Through a systematic review of the existing literature, we aim to elucidate the connections between insomnia, sleep duration, cardiovascular factors, and ischemic stroke onset. We searched databases, including MEDLINE, SciELO, Scopus, and Science Direct, using an adapted PICO framework.

Age-related changes in the mitochondrial status of human cumulus cells (hCCs) impact oocyte quality; however, the relationship between hCC mitochondrial (dys)function and reproductive aging remains poorly understood. This study aimed to establish the interplay between hCC mitochondrial dysfunction and women's reproductive potential. In this investigation, 266 women were enrolled and categorized into two groups based on their age: a young group (<35 years old) and an advanced maternal age (AMA) group (≥35 years old).

The practice of physical activity, exercise and sport has many benefits for the general population, but studies on the population with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are scarce and inconclusive. The aim of this systematic review is to analyze the state of the art on the role of physical activity, exercise and sport in the quality of life and well-being of people with IDD, seeking to understand the current panorama in this area and provide answers to these questions. The research was carried out between July and October 2023 using three databases: PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus.

Background: Spironolactone (SPI) is a diuretic widely used to treat cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and is non-specific for mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) and with an affinity for progesterone (PR) and androgen (AR) receptors. Since 2009, it has been suggested that pharmaceuticals are emerging contaminants (called EDC), and recently, it was reported that most EDC are AR and MR antagonists and estrogen receptors (ER) agonists. Concerning SPI, endocrine-disrupting effects were observed in female western mosquitofish, but there are still no data regarding the SPI effects as a possible human EDC.

The B-MYB gene encodes a transcription factor (B-MYB) that regulates cell growth and survival. Abnormal expression of B-MYB is frequently observed in lung cancer and poses challenges for targeted drug therapy. Oncogenes often contain DNA structures called G-quadruplexes (G4s) in their promoter regions, and B-MYB is no exception.
