Background: Periodontitis, a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease, offers insights into the broader landscape of chronic inflammatory conditions. The progression and treatment outcomes of periodontitis are closely related to the oral microbiota's composition. Adjunctive systemic Amoxicillin 500 mg and Metronidazole 400 mg, often prescribed thrice daily for 7 days to enhance periodontal therapy's efficacy, have lasting effects on the oral microbiome.

An uncontrolled activity of neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs) contributes to inflammatory diseases. Cathepsin C (CatC) is known to activate NSPs during neutrophilic differentiation and represents a promising pharmacological target in NSP-mediated diseases. In humans, Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) patients have mutations in theirCTSC gene, resulting in the complete absence of CatC activity.

Background: Apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) high-risk variants are major determinants of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in people of African ancestry. Previous studies have identified epigenetic changes in relation to kidney function and CKD, but not in individuals with APOL1 high-risk genotypes. We conducted an epigenome-wide analysis of CKD and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in in people of African ancestry and APOL1 high-risk genotypes with HIV.

Aim: An excessively activated or dysregulated complement system has been proven to be a vital contributor to the pathogenesis of periodontitis. It has been previously hypothesized that inhibiting the activity of complement component C5 by targeting the C5a receptor is a powerful candidate for treating periodontitis. Here, we apply the drug target instrumental variable (IV) approach to investigate the therapeutic effect of genetically proxied inhibition of C5 on periodontitis.

Caru et al. emphasize the positive of physical activity during and after treatment for children with cancer, highlighting its significance for improving health outcomes. In Germany, exercise therapy has not yet been integrated into standard post-treatment care; however, efforts are underway to establish a nationwide framework that enhances these services.

The exocrine pancreas is the main source of digestive enzymes which are released from secretory vesicles of acinar cells into the small intestine. Enzymes, including amylases, proteases and lipases, degrade the ingested food and thus determine the nutritional substrate for the gut microbiota. Acute (AP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP) are associated with a transitional or progressive exocrine pancreatic dysfunction, we analysed in the present study how an experimental induction of pancreatitis in mouse models affects the colonic and duodenal microbiome composition.

Background: Procedural and reporting guidelines are crucial in framing scientific practices and communications among researchers and the broader community. These guidelines aim to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and reliability in scientific research. Despite several methodological frameworks proposed by various initiatives to foster reproducibility, challenges such as data leakage and reproducibility remain prevalent.

In temporomandibular disorder (TMD), the effects of standard interventions such as using an occlusal splint and its impact on pain relief and pain catastrophizing are poorly understood. Earlier work pointed to a crucial role of insula activation with changes in pain relief by occlusal splint treatment. We performed a functional imaging study using specially developed splint systems to allow for a placebo-controlled longitudinal design.

Background: Systematic counseling on behavioral health risk factors (HRFs) may be suitable to promote health among general hospital patients. This study aimed to investigate the openness of patients towards systematic screening and intervention of HRFs, its relation to actual participation in a multi-behavioral intervention, and whether socio-economic characteristics, HRFs and health indicators are related to approval.
Methods: All 18- to 64-year-old patients hospitalized in five medical departments at the University Medicine Hospital Greifswald in Germany were asked between May and July 2022 to participate in a survey and in a subsequent pre-post intervention study.

Background: Spinal muscular atrophy is a rare neurodegenerative disorder in children which leads untreated to muscle wasting, respiratory impairments, and a shortened life expectancy. Parents as primary caregivers are often physically and psychologically burdened. In recent years, new and promising treatment options have been approved, but it remains unclear if they have an impact on the psychosocial situation of affected families.

Background: Telemedicine provides specialized medical expertise in underserved areas where neurological expertise is frequently not available on a daily basis for hospitalized stroke patients. While tele-consultations are well established in acute stroke assessment, the value of telemedicine-based ward-rounds in the subsequent in-patient stroke management is unknown.
Methods: Four telemedicine stroke networks in Germany, implemented in eight out of 16 federal states, participate in this prospective observational multi-center study.

This study aimed to investigate the influence of various sperm quality characteristics, including morphology, motility, and count, on the success rates of clinical pregnancy achieved through assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and intrauterine insemination (IUI). The secondary objective was to assess the impact of these sperm parameters on the clinical pregnancy rate that resulted in the detection of a fetal heartbeat during the 11th week of gestation, a crucial milestone in successful ART-derived pregnancies. The researchers employed a retrospective analysis, evaluating data from 734 couples undergoing IVF/ICSI and 1197 couples undergoing IUI across two infertility centers.
