Background: Whether circulating sex hormones modulate mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in aging men is controversial.
Purpose: To clarify associations of sex hormones with these outcomes.
Data Sources: Systematic literature review to July 2019, with bridge searches to March 2024.

Background: In cardiology, cardiac output (CO) is an important parameter for assessing cardiac function. While invasive thermodilution procedures are the gold standard for CO assessment, transthoracic Doppler echocardiography (TTE) has become the established method for routine CO assessment in daily clinical practice. However, a demand persists for non-invasive approaches, including oscillometric pulse wave analysis (PWA), to enhance the accuracy of CO estimation, reduce complications associated with invasive procedures, and facilitate its application in non-intensive care settings.

Importance: Identification of individuals at high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease within the population is important to inform primary prevention strategies.
Objective: To evaluate the prognostic value of routinely available cardiovascular biomarkers when added to established risk factors.
Design, Setting, And Participants: Individual-level analysis including data on cardiovascular biomarkers from 28 general population-based cohorts from 12 countries and 4 continents with assessments by participant age.

We tested if cognitive and brain reserve and maintenance explain individual differences in episodic memory and other cognitive domains from late middle to early older adulthood. We used The Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging data (n=1604 men) with episodic memory measured at mean ages of 56, 62 and 68 years, and magnetic resonance imaging data for a subsample of participants (n=321). Cognitive reserve -young adult general cognitive ability at a mean age of 20 years and, to a lesser degree, educational attainment- was positively related to episodic memory performance at each assessment, but not to memory change.

Primary leiomyosarcoma of bone (LMSoB) is extremely rare, comprising only <0.7% of primary malignant bone tumors, and is therefore considered an ultra-rare tumor entity. There is currently no consensus as to whether therapeutic strategies should be based on the biological characteristics of soft tissue leiomyosarcoma or on primary tumor localization in the bone.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the gastroretentive capacity of different formulation principles. This was indirectly determined by the absorption behavior of caffeine from the dosage forms. A slow and continuous appearance of caffeine in the saliva of healthy volunteers was used as a parameter for a prolonged gastric retention time.

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common reasons for consultation in general practice. Currently, LBP is categorised into specific and non-specific causes. However, extravertebral causes, such as abdominal aortic aneurysm or pancreatitis, are not being considered.

The co-localization of the lysosomal protease cathepsin B (CTSB) and the digestive zymogen trypsinogen is a prerequisite for the initiation of acute pancreatitis. However, the exact molecular mechanisms of co-localization are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the role of lysosomes in the onset of acute pancreatitis by using two different experimental approaches.

Physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models can help to understand the effects of gastric emptying on pharmacokinetics and in particular also provide a platform for understanding mechanisms of food effects, as well as extrapolation between different postprandial conditions, whether standardized clinical or patient-oriented, non-clinical conditions. By integrating biorelevant dissolution data from the GastroDuo dissolution model into a previously described mechanistic model of fed-state gastric emptying, we simulated the effects of a high-calorie high-fat meal on the pharmacokinetics of sildenafil, febuxostat, acetylsalicylic acid, theobromine and caffeine. The model was able to simulate the variability in C and t caused by the presence of the stomach road.

BACKGROUND Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of visual impairment in the elderly population in industrialized countries. The Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) with its cohort SHIP-TREND was designed to investigate risk factors and clinical disorders in the general population of northeast Germany. This work focused on the first follow-up of SHIP-TREND and determined associated modifiable risk factors of AMD.

The aim of the present study was to determine if colostrum and the equipment for harvesting and feeding colostrum are sources of fecal ESBL/AmpC-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL/AmpC-E. coli) in calves. Therefore, 15 male calves fed with pooled colostrum on a dairy farm and held individually in an experimental barn, the colostrum pool and the equipment for harvesting and feeding colostrum were sampled and analyzed for the occurrence of ESBL/AmpC-E.

Aims: The use of a porous metal shell supported by two augments with the 'footing' technique is one solution to manage Paprosky IIIB acetabular defects in revision total hip arthroplasty. The aim of this study was to assess the medium-term implant survival and radiological and clinical outcomes of this technique.
Methods: We undertook a retrospective, two-centre series of 39 hips in 39 patients (15 male, 24 female) treated with the 'footing' technique for Paprosky IIIB acetabular defects between 2007 and 2020.

The gadolinium-based contrast agent DOTA-Gd is clinically used in combination with local anesthetics for direct magnetic resonance arthrography. It remains unclear whether gadolinium uptake into cartilage is influenced by co-administration of bupivacaine or ropivacaine and whether DOTA-Gd alters their chondrotoxicity. Gadolinium quantification of chondrogenic spheroids revealed enhanced gadolinium uptake after simultaneous exposure to local anesthetics.
