The clavicle remains one of the most fractured bones in the human body, despite the fact that little is known about the MR imaging of it and the adjacent sternoclavicular joint. This study aims to establish standardized values for the diameters of the clavicle as well as the angles of the sternoclavicular joint using whole-body MRI scans of a large and healthy population and to examine further possible correlations between diameters and angles and influencing factors like BMI, weight, height, sex, and age. This study reviewed whole-body MRI scans from the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP), a German population-based cross-sectional study in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The role of social network diversity in self-perceptions of aging in later life.

Eur J Ageing

June 2024

Department for Prevention Research and Social Medicine, Institute for Community Medicine, University Medicine Greifswald, Greifswald, Germany.

While the link between self-perceptions of aging (SPA) and healthy aging is well established, less is known about the association between social factors and SPA. The present study investigated whether higher social network diversity is associated with more positive and less negative SPA and whether this association is moderated by age. We examined cross-sectional data from the German Ageing Survey of 2008 (DEAS; N = 6205, 40-85 years, 49.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined delayed diagnosed injuries (DDI) in severely injured patients, finding that 9.2% of a large trauma cohort experienced DDIs, mostly involving head, extremity, and thoracic injuries.
  • Factors like higher injury severity scores, unconsciousness, and extensive blood transfusions were linked to an increased risk of DDI, leading to the development of the 'Risk for Delayed Diagnoses' (RIDD) score.
  • This score can help medical staff identify patients at higher risk of DDIs, emphasizing the need for thorough physical examinations and follow-up assessments to reduce the chance of missed injuries.

Ischemic Post-Conditioning in a Rat Model of Asphyxial Cardiac Arrest.

Cells

June 2024

Department of Anesthesiology, Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Nashville, TN 37212, USA.

Background: Ischemic post-conditioning (IPoC) has been shown to improve outcomes in limited pre-clinical models. As down-time is often unknown, this technique needs to be investigated over a range of scenarios. As this tool limits reperfusion injury, there may be limited benefit or even harm after short arrest and limited ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) measurement is the diagnostic cornerstone for primary thyroid dysfunction. There is high inter-individual but limited intra-individual variation in TSH concentrations, largely due to genetic factors. The currently used wide population-based reference intervals may lead to inappropriate management decisions.

Limitations in next-generation sequencing-based genotyping of breast cancer polygenic risk score loci.

Eur J Hum Genet

August 2024

Center for Familial Breast and Ovarian Cancer, Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO), Medical Faculty, University of Cologne and University Hospital Cologne, Cologne, Germany.

Considering polygenic risk scores (PRSs) in individual risk prediction is increasingly implemented in genetic testing for hereditary breast cancer (BC) based on next-generation sequencing (NGS). To calculate individual BC risks, the Breast and Ovarian Analysis of Disease Incidence and Carrier Estimation Algorithm (BOADICEA) with the inclusion of the BCAC 313 or the BRIDGES 306 BC PRS is commonly used. The PRS calculation depends on accurately reproducing the variant allele frequencies (AFs) and, consequently, the distribution of PRS values anticipated by the algorithm.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the link between heavy alcohol use and young-onset cryptogenic ischemic stroke (CIS) in individuals aged 18-49.
  • Patients showed significantly higher rates of heavy drinking compared to stroke-free controls, with 13.7% of CIS patients classified as heavy alcohol users versus 6.7% of controls.
  • The findings suggest that heavy alcohol consumption, especially binge drinking, is an independent risk factor for CIS in young men, but not in women.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze discrepancies between self- and proxy-rated health-related quality of life (HRQoL), measured with the EuroQol 5 Dimension 5 Level survey (EQ-5D-5L), in people living with dementia (PlwD) and their caregivers on an individual response level.

Methods: EQ-5D-5L, sociodemographic and clinical data were obtained from baseline data of = 174 dyads of a cluster-randomized, controlled intervention trial. Self- and proxy-rated EQ-5D-5L health profiles were evaluated in terms of response distribution and agreement (weighted Kappa), and discrepancies in individual dimension level were analyzed using the Paretian Classification of Health Change (PCHC) as well as the presence and degree of inconsistencies between ratings.

Purpose: The ideal treatment of peri-implant femur fractures (PIFFs) remains unclear due to the thin clinical and biomechanical evidence concerning the most suitable form of osteosynthesis. The purpose of the present study was thus to determine the biomechanical stability that results from combining a cephalomedullary nail and a plate for proximal PIFFs, especially when the nail-plate docking technique is applied.

Methods: Twenty four PIFFs were simulated in both 12 foam and 12 composite specimens and were stabilized via a combination of a cephalomedullary nail and a plate.

Older adults have difficulties to detect the intentions, thoughts, and feelings of others, indicating an age-associated decline of socio-cognitive abilities that are known as "mentalizing". These deficits in mental state recognition are driven by neurofunctional alterations in brain regions that are implicated in mentalizing, such as the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) and the dorso-medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC). We tested whether focal transcranial current stimulation (tDCS) of the rTPJ and dmPFC has the potential to eliminate mentalizing deficits in older adults.
