Fertility preservation before cancer treatment: the dilemma of saying 'no' as the price of glory.

Hum Reprod

May 2024

Department of Reproductive Biology, Hôpital Tenon, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris, France.

A great deal of work has been carried out by professionals in reproductive medicine in order to raise awareness about fertility preservation (FP) techniques, particularly for women, and to ensure that FP is included in the care of young adults treated for cancer or a pathology requiring gonadotoxic treatment. If the importance of the development of our discipline is obvious, our militancy in favour of FP and our emotional projections must not make us forget that medical thinking must be carried out not only on a case-by-case basis, weighing up the benefit-risk balance, but also without losing sight that conceiving a child with one's own gametes is not a vital issue. The cultural importance given to the genetic link with offspring may bias patients' and physicians' decisions, while other ways of achieving parenthood exist, and are often more effective.

Environmental pollution is one of the main challenges faced by humanity. By their ubiquity and vast range of metabolic capabilities, microorganisms are affected by pollution with consequences on their host organisms and on the functioning of their environment. They also play key roles in the fate of pollutants through the degradation, transformation, and transfer of organic or inorganic compounds.

Serum sickness (SS) and anaphylaxis are well-documented complications of rituximab (RTX) infusions. While the first presents usually as a triad of fever, rash, and arthralgias occurring seven to 14 days after infusion, the second presents as a sudden onset of hemodynamic instability, bronchospasm, and a pruritic erythematous rash, occurring within the first few hours after infusion. We present here a case of serum sickness associated with anaphylaxis five days after the first infusion of a second course of RTX.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a common cause of liver inflammation, known as acute hepatitis, around the world.
  • Sometimes, HEV can cause serious brain problems, like meningitis, which is a swelling of the brain, and other issues, but this is rare, with only 13 cases reported in 20 years.
  • An interesting case involved a 44-year-old person who became aggressive and then slipped into a coma due to HEV but got better on their own without any treatment, showing that HEV can be a hidden cause of serious brain problems.

While colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are commonly used as fluorescent donors within biosensors based on Förster resonant energy transfer (FRET), they are hesitantly employed as acceptors. On the sole basis of Förster theory and the well-known behaviour of organic dyes, it is often argued that the QD absorption band over the UV-visible range is too wide. Discarding these preconceptions inherited from classical fluorophores, we experimentally examine the FRET process occurring between donor and acceptor CdTe QDs and provide a mathematical description of it.

Due to their ability to form extremely heat resistant spores, anaerobic bacteria are responsible for frequent food spoilage. The development of rapid and specific methods for the detection and quantification of spore contamination is therefore of major interest. In this paper, we describe for the first time the selection of aptamers specific to spores of Geobacillus stearothermophilus (Gbs), which induce flat sour spoilage in vegetable cans.

4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) is the molecular target of β-triketone herbicides in plants. This enzyme, involved in the tyrosine pathway, is also present in a wide range of living organisms, including microorganisms. Previous studies, focusing on a few strains and using high herbicide concentrations, showed that β-triketones are able to inhibit microbial HPPD.

Studies indicate that the intestinal microbiota influences general metabolic processes in humans, thereby modulating the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, allergy, cardiovascular disease, and colorectal cancer (CRC). Dietary factors are also directly related to chronic disease risk, and they affect the composition and function of the gut microbiota. Still, detailed knowledge on the relation between diet, the microbiota, and chronic disease risk is limited.

Ferrociphenols are characterized by the presence of a biologically active redox motif [ferrocenyl-ene-p-phenol], and are known to exhibit anticancer properties. Recent studies have identified a new series of ferrociphenols that bear an imido-type heterocycle at the terminus of a short alkyl chain, and which showed very strong antiproliferativity against multiple types of cancer cells. This work describes the syntheses and an SAR study of ferrociphenols bearing a diversity-based range of nitrogen-containing substituents on the alkyl chain.

A Jovian analogue orbiting a white dwarf star.

Nature

October 2021

Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Bordeaux, University of Bordeaux, Pessac, France.

Studies have shown that the remnants of destroyed planets and debris-disk planetesimals can survive the volatile evolution of their host stars into white dwarfs, but few intact planetary bodies around white dwarfs have been detected. Simulations predict that planets in Jupiter-like orbits around stars of ≲8 M (solar mass) avoid being destroyed by the strong tidal forces of their stellar host, but as yet, there has been no observational confirmation of such a survivor. Here we report the non-detection of a main-sequence lens star in the microlensing event MOA-2010-BLG-477Lb using near-infrared observations from the Keck Observatory.

Deep neural networks achieve stellar generalisation even when they have enough parameters to easily fit all their training data. We study this phenomenon by analysing the dynamics and the performance of over-parameterised two-layer neural networks in the teacher-student setup, where one network, the student, is trained on data generated by another network, called the teacher. We show how the dynamics of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) is captured by a set of differential equations and prove that this description is asymptotically exact in the limit of large inputs.

"Pericarditis Acute pericarditis is a common disease, most often idiopathic or viral. This is usually a mild condition but recurrences are frequent. The predominant pathophysiological hypothesis is that of underlying dysimmune disorders, involving an inflammatory response of the innate immune system typical of "autoinflammatory diseases", mainly mediated by interleukin-1 [IL-1] with activation of inflammasome; and an adaptive immune system response, typical of «autoimmune diseases», primarily mediated by autoantibodies and autoreactive T cells.

Resistance of cancer cells to current chemotherapeutic drugs has obliged the scientific community to seek innovative compounds. Ferrocifens, lipophilic organometallic compounds composed of a tamoxifen scaffold covalently bound to a ferrocene moiety, have shown very interesting antiproliferative, cytotoxic and immunologic effects. The formation of ferrocenyl quinone methide plays a crucial role in the multifaceted activity of ferrocifens.
