Article Synopsis
  • This study explores how adaptive optics-transscleral flood illumination (AO-TFI) imaging can provide detailed insights into retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) changes in cases of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) compared to standard clinical imaging.
  • Researchers analyzed 125 AO-TFI images from both affected and healthy eyes, finding significant changes in RPE contrast and patterns during different stages of CSCR.
  • The findings indicate that AO-TFI not only gives a clearer picture of outer retinal abnormalities but also reveals previously undetectable RPE issues, underscoring the need for further research to assess the clinical implications of these findings in understanding CSCR progression.

Fertility preservation before cancer treatment: the dilemma of saying 'no' as the price of glory.

Hum Reprod

May 2024

Department of Reproductive Biology, Hôpital Tenon, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris, France.

A great deal of work has been carried out by professionals in reproductive medicine in order to raise awareness about fertility preservation (FP) techniques, particularly for women, and to ensure that FP is included in the care of young adults treated for cancer or a pathology requiring gonadotoxic treatment. If the importance of the development of our discipline is obvious, our militancy in favour of FP and our emotional projections must not make us forget that medical thinking must be carried out not only on a case-by-case basis, weighing up the benefit-risk balance, but also without losing sight that conceiving a child with one's own gametes is not a vital issue. The cultural importance given to the genetic link with offspring may bias patients' and physicians' decisions, while other ways of achieving parenthood exist, and are often more effective.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are episodes of anomalous warming in the ocean that can last from a few days to years. MHWs have different characteristics in terms of intensity, duration and frequency and generate thermal stress in marine ecosystems. In reef ecosystems, they are one of the main causes of the decreased presence and abundance of corals, invertebrates and fish.

Verifiable Blind Quantum Computing with Trapped Ions and Single Photons.

Phys Rev Lett

April 2024

Department of Physics, University of Oxford, Clarendon Laboratory, Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3PU, United Kingdom.

We report the first hybrid matter-photon implementation of verifiable blind quantum computing. We use a trapped-ion quantum server and a client-side photonic detection system networked via a fiber-optic quantum link. The availability of memory qubits and deterministic entangling gates enables interactive protocols without postselection-key requirements for any scalable blind server, which previous realizations could not provide.

Cell therapy for muscular dystrophy has met with limited success, mainly due to the poor engraftment of donor cells, especially in fibrotic muscle at an advanced stage of the disease. We developed a cell-mediated exon skipping that exploits the multinucleated nature of myofibers to achieve cross-correction of resident, dystrophic nuclei by the U7 small nuclear RNA engineered to skip exon 51 of the dystrophin gene. We observed that co-culture of genetically corrected human DMD myogenic cells (but not of WT cells) with their dystrophic counterparts at a ratio of either 1:10 or 1:30 leads to dystrophin production at a level several folds higher than what predicted by simple dilution.
