Acute anterior uveitis (AAU) associated with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) B27 is the most common form of noninfectious intraocular inflammation and is considered to be a separate clinical entity. Young adults between the ages of 20 and 40 years are predominantly affected. The HLA-B27 positive AAU typically presents as a unilateral, fulminant disruption of the blood-aqueous humor barrier, which is accompanied by pronounced cellular infiltration and fibrinous exudation.

Background/objectives: Tooth agenesis (TA) is among the most common malformations in humans. Although several causative mutations have been described, the genetic cause often remains elusive. Here, we test whether whole genome sequencing (WGS) could bridge this diagnostic gap.

Bone defects and infections pose significant challenges for treatment, requiring a comprehensive approach for prevention and treatment. Thus, this study sought to evaluate the efficacy of various bone allografts in the absorption and release of antibiotics. A specially designed high-absorbency, high-surface-area carrier graft composed of human demineralized cortical fibers and granulated cancellous bone (fibrous graft) was compared to different human bone allograft types.

Background: In the past, the IIEF‑5 (International Index of Erectile Function 5 ) was predominantly used to measure erectile function in prostate cancer patients. Following international developments, the domain "sexuality" of the EPIC-26 (Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite 26) is increasingly used in Germany.
Objective: The aim of this work is to create a practicable comparison of the domain "sexuality" of the EPIC-26 with the IIEF‑5 for treatment in Germany.

Purpose: Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) accounts for >50% of all corneal transplants in Germany. So far, no data from such a large multicenter study have been published.
Methods: This retrospective study included 3200 DMEKs at seven departments performed for Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) or bullous keratopathy (BK).

Myelitis is an acute or subacute inflammatory syndrome of the spinal cord. Myelopathy, often used as a synonym and presenting with similar symptoms in clinical practice, can be caused by numerous, not primarily inflammatory etiologies and might also show a progressive disease course. Within the last decade the spectrum of autoimmune myelitis was significantly broadened as was the spectrum of diagnostic methods.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are rare severe and often life-threatening reactions of the skin and mucous membranes. They are considered as a single disease entity with different expressions of severity and are summarized under the term epidermal necrolysis (EN). There is a high risk of ocular involvement, which can lead to long-lasting eye problems and even blindness without immediate ophthalmological treatment.

Multivalent interactions at biological interfaces occur frequently in nature and mediate recognition and interactions in essential physiological processes such as cell-to-cell adhesion. Multivalency is also a key principle that allows tight binding between pathogens and host cells during the initial stages of infection. One promising approach to prevent infection is the design of synthetic or semisynthetic multivalent binders that interfere with pathogen adhesion.

Background: Infectious diseases continue to play an important role for disease perception, health-economic considerations and public health in Germany. In recent years, infectious diseases have been linked to the development of non-communicable diseases. Analyses of the German National Cohort (GNC) may provide deeper insights into this issue and pave the way for new targeted approaches in disease prevention.

Background: Data on self-reported cardiovascular and metabolic diseases are available for the first 100,000 participants of the population-based German National Cohort (GNC, NAKO Gesundheitsstudie).
Objectives: To describe assessment methods and the frequency of self-reported cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in the German National Cohort.
Materials And Methods: Using a computer-based, standardized personal interview, 101,806 participants (20-75 years, 46% men) from 18 nationwide study centres were asked to use a predefined list to report medical conditions ever diagnosed by a physician, including cardiovascular or metabolic diseases.

Background: Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in both children and adults. Asthma first occurring in adulthood (adult-onset asthma, AOA) is associated with poorer prognosis compared to childhood-onset asthma (COA), which urgently calls for more research in this area. The aim of this work was to analyze the data on asthma collected in the German National Cohort and compare it with the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Adults (DEGS), in particular regarding AOA.
