Background: Nuclear Receptor Subfamily 5 Group A Member 2 (NR5A2, LRH-1) is an oncogene in a wide range of cancer types. Bioinformatics analysis on glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) tumors has revealed that the miR-139-5p-NR5A2 axis may be putatively regulated by the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) RP3-439F8.1.

Electronic address:

Although CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing is widely applied to mimic human disorders, whether acute manipulation of disease-causing genes in the brain leads to behavioral abnormalities in non-human primates remains to be determined. Here we induced genetic mutations in MECP2, a critical gene linked to Rett syndrome (RTT) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), in the hippocampus (DG and CA1-4) of adolescent rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) in vivo via adeno-associated virus (AAV)-delivered Staphylococcus aureus Cas9 with small guide RNAs (sgRNAs) targeting MECP2. In comparison to monkeys injected with AAV-SaCas9 alone (n = 4), numerous autistic-like behavioral abnormalities were identified in the AAV-SaCas9-sgMECP2-injected monkeys (n = 7), including social interaction deficits, abnormal sleep patterns, insensitivity to aversive stimuli, abnormal hand motions, and defective social reward behaviors.

Purpose: Glaucoma remains a poorly understood disease, and identifying biomarkers for early diagnosis is critical to reducing the risk of glaucoma-related visual impairment and blindness. The aim of this review is to provide current metabolic profiles for glaucoma through a summary and analysis of reported metabolites associated with glaucoma.

Methods: We searched PubMed and Web of Science for metabolomics studies of humans on glaucoma published before November 11, 2020.

Graves' ophthalmopathy, also known as thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO), is the most common inflammatory eye disease in adults. The most common etiology for TAO is Graves' disease (GD); however, proteomic research focusing on differences between GD and TAO is limited. This study aimed to identify differentially expressed proteins between thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) and GD.

Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) induced a foam-cell-like phenotype of the vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), leading to the inflammatory responses incorporating Toll-like receptor- (Tlr-) mediated cellular alterations. However, the role of Tlr4 in foam cell formation and underlying molecular pathways has not been comprehensively elucidated. To further investigate the mechanism, VSMCs were incubated with different doses of oxLDL, and then, the lipid, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, Tlr family genes, and the foam cell phenotype were explored.

MiR-137 regulates low-intensity shear stress-induced human aortic endothelial cell apoptosis via JNK/AP-1 signaling.

J Physiol Biochem

August 2021

Department of Vascular Surgery, Fuwai Cardiovascular Hospital, No. 528 Shahe North Road, Wuhua District, Kunming, 650000, Yunnan Province, China.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the role of miR-137 in low-intensity shear stress-induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and cell apoptosis in human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs). HAECs were transfected with miR-137 mimic, miR-137 inhibitor, or the corresponding negative control and then exposed to pulsatile shear stress in a parallel-plate flow chamber at 1, 2, 5, 10, and 15 dyn/cm for 3 h. Real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to detect mRNA expression of miR-137 and SDS22.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been strongly associated with an increased risk of developing cognitive dysfunction and dementia. The mechanisms of diabetes-associated cognitive dysfunction (DACD) have not been fully elucidated to date. Some studies proved lower cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the hippocampus was associated with poor executive function and memory in T2DM.

Background And Aims: The association between serum uric acid (SUA) and tea consumption has been studied in previous work, and there were arguments among various population group employed as well as different statistical approaches. The aim of this work is to investigate the tea effect on SUA levels among older adults by comparing three large-scale populations with both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.

Method: We examined the relationship between intake and SUA levels among older adults using linear regression.

This study aims to compare clinical characteristics and severity between adults with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV-p) and influenza-related pneumonia (Flu-p). A total of 127 patients with RSV-p, 693 patients with influenza A-related pneumonia (FluA-p), and 386 patients with influenza B-related pneumonia (FluB-p) were retrospectively reviewed from 2013 through 2019 in five teaching hospitals in China. A multivariate logistic regression model indicated that age ≥ 50 years, cerebrovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, solid malignant tumor, nasal congestion, myalgia, sputum production, respiratory rates ≥ 30 beats/min, lymphocytes < 0.

Background: Although the genetic factors associated with hypertension remain unknown, genetic variations in genes related to ion channels, inflammation, and the cell cycle may affect susceptibility to hypertension. In the present study, the association between hypertension and 10 candidate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was evaluated among Chinese Dai people, who have a smaller gene pool than Han individuals.

Methods: A total of 1,193 samples from Dai people were collected, including 488 with hypertension and 705 with normal blood pressure.

Intracellular Fe3+ amount is one of the critical determinants of human health. The development of simple and effective probes for the quantitative detection of Fe3+in vivo is of great significance for the early diagnosis of disease or disorder associated with iron deficiency or overload. In this study, remarkable carbon dots, which can serve as a biosensor for efficient intracellular Fe3+ detection, were synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization of Fusobacterium nucleatum, an anaerobic bacterium.
