Outlier genes with marked overexpression in subsets of cancers like ERBB2 have potential for the identification of gene classifiers and therapeutic targets for the appropriate subpopulation. In this study, using the cancer outlier profile analysis strategy, we identified WNT1-inducible-signaling pathway protein 3 (WISP3) as an outlier gene that is highly expressed in a subset of colorectal cancers (CRCs) from The Cancer Genome Atlas dataset. A meta-cancer outlier profile analysis and immunohistochemistry experiment to validate the outlier expression model of WISP3 in CRC was then performed.

The aim of our study was to find feature genes associated with astrocytoma and correlative gene functions which can distinguish cancer tissue from adjacent non-tumor astrocyte tissues. Gene expression profile GSE15824 was downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus database which included 8 astrocytoma tissues and 3 adjacent non-tumor astrocyte samples. The raw data were first transformed into probe-level data and the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between tissues of patients with astrocytoma and normal specimen were identified using T-test in samr package of R.

Background: Chemoresistance is a major obstacle to successful chemotherapy for colorectal cancer. Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A2 (eIF5A2), one of the two isoforms in the eIF5A family, has been reported to be a new oncogene in many types of human cancer. In the present study, we aimed to investigate whether eIF5A2 was involved in the chemoresistance to doxorubicin in colorectal cancer.

Aims And Background: Chibby (CBY), a β-catenin binding partner, inhibits Wnt/β-catenin-mediated transcriptional activation by competing with Tcf/Lef factors for β-catenin binding and promoting the export of β-catenin from nucleus to cytoplasm. The regulatory effect of CBY in this signaling pathway suggests its biological importance as a potential tumor suppressor gene. The purposes of this study were to determine whether the expression of CBY was downregulated in human laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) samples, the CpG sites of CBY at the promoter region were methylated in these tumor samples, and reduced expression of CBY was induced by methylation of CBY promoters.

The aberrant constitutive activation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) has been observed in glioblastomas, while NF-κB inhibitor alpha (NFKBIA) inhibits the NF-κB signaling pathway under several physiological processes. However, the contribution of NFKBIA to glioblastomas is poorly understood. In the present study, using gene sequencing, we identified rs1957106 as a novel single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in NFKBIA in glioblastoma and found that it was more frequently present in glioblastoma patients.

Cognitive impairment is a common finding in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but little attention has been focused on therapeutic intervention for this complication. Chronic intermittent hypoxia hypercapnia (CIHH) exposure is considered to be responsible for the pathogenesis of COPD. Dl-3n-Butylphthalide (NBP), extracted from Apium graveolens Linn, has displayed a broad spectrum of neuroprotective properties.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among the diabetic patients and currently there is no effective means to reverse its pathological progress. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) has shown promise as a molecular therapy for DCM, but its delivery is inefficient and non-specific. In the present study, a therapy combining nanoparticle (NP) carrier and ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) was reported the first time for bFGF delivery to the heart of diabetic rats.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play important roles in tumor cell proliferation and apoptosis and contribute to tumor growth, angiogenesis, migration, and invasion primarily via extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation and/or the activation of pre-pro-growth factors. Recently, there has been considerable interest in the posttranscriptional regulation of MMPs via microRNAs (miRs). In this review, we highlight the complicated interactive network comprised of different MMPs and their regulating microRNAs, as well as the ways in which these interactions influence cancer development, including tumor angiogenesis, growth, invasion, and metastasis.
