  • Researchers looked at a hospital in China with COVID-19 patients and found that surfaces and medical gear got dirtier starting August 18, 2021, which could put doctors and nurses at risk.
  • They collected samples before and after cleaning up the hospital to find out why things were so contaminated and if their cleaning helped.
  • They discovered that the rooms of critically ill patients had the highest levels of contamination, likely because medical staff were touching dirty surfaces and then their protective gear. *

To analyze the effectiveness and safety of zoledronic acid combined with chemotherapy for lung cancer spinal metastases, 96 patients with lung cancer spinal metastases were averagely classified into the experimental group (gemcitabine, cisplatin, and zoledronic acid) and the control group (gemcitabine and cisplatin). An optimized noise variance estimation algorithm (OMAPB) was proposed based on the maximum a posteriori Bayesian method (MAPB), and the algorithm was applied to the patient's computed tomography (CT) scan. The results indicated that in terms of curative effect, the number of complete remission (CR), partial remission (PR) cases, effective rate, and clinical benefit rate of the test group was significantly higher than those of the control group.

Precise recognition of early Parkinson's disease (PD) has always been a challenging task requiring more feasible biomarkers to be integrated to improve diagnostic accuracy. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are believed to be potential and promising candidate biomarkers for PD. However, the role of altered miRNAs of CSF play in PD is unclear.

Exosomes in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Clin Chim Acta

December 2021

Cancer Research Institute, Hengyang Medical College, University of South China, Hengyang 421001, Hunan Province, People's Republic of China; Guilin Medical University, Guilin 541199, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant epithelial tumor with a unique geographical distribution, primarily prevalent in East Africa and Asia. Although there is an increased understanding of the pathogenesis and risk factors of NPC, prevention and treatment efforts remain limited. Various studies have indicated that exosomes are actively involved in NPC by delivering biomolecules such as non-coding RNAs and proteins to target cells.

Effect of thiamazole on kainic acid-induced seizures in mice.

Saudi J Biol Sci

March 2021

Department of Biochemistry, College of Science, King Saud University, Riyadh 11451, Saudi Arabia.

Article Synopsis
  • Kainic acid (KA) is used to induce seizures in mice for epilepsy research, with past studies highlighting the influence of neurotransmitters and oxidative stress in this model.
  • The anti-hyperthyroid drug thiamazole (TZ) was tested for its effects on KA-induced seizures, with results showing that TZ increased the frequency and severity of seizures in a dose-dependent manner.
  • These findings suggest that TZ may alter the metabolism of KA, potentially increasing its toxicity, and raise caution about using anti-hyperthyroid drugs in patients with epilepsy.

Liver cancer is a critical clinical condition with augmented malignancy, rapid progression, and poor prognosis. Liver cancer often initiates as fibrosis, develops as cirrhosis, and results in cancer. For centuries, medicinal plants have been incorporated in various liver-associated complications, and recently, research has recognized that many bioactive compounds from medicinal plants may interact with targets related to liver disorders.

  • The study examined how disease progression in COPD patients can predict future exacerbations, focusing on a modified and simplified version of short-term clinically important deterioration (CID).
  • Conducted over 18 months with 127 patients, the research found that those experiencing short-term exacerbations in the first 6 months were significantly more likely to have future exacerbations.
  • The results indicated that both the modified CID and the Simplified CID were strong predictors of exacerbations, with the Simplified CID showing slightly better predictive ability.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in middle-aged and elderly people. However, the etiology and pathogenesis of PD are still unclear and there is a lack of reliable biomarkers for early molecular diagnosis. Parkin (encoded by ) is a ubiquitin E3 ligase that participates in mitochondrial homeostasis, the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, oxidative stress response, and cell death pathways, which are involved in the pathogenesis of PD.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers, and it has a poor prognosis. Emerging evidence shows that circular RNAs (circRNAs) may act as good therapeutic targets for cancers due to their abundance and stability. However, their regulatory role in CRC needs further investigation.

  • The study explores how bleomycin affects the growth and death of brain glioma cells through the TGF-β/Smads signaling pathway.
  • U87 glioma cells were treated with varying concentrations of bleomycin, showing decreased cell proliferation and increased apoptosis at higher concentrations (10 mU/mL) compared to lower doses (5 mU/mL) and a control group.
  • Gene and protein analyses revealed a significant downregulation of Bcl-2 and TGF-β1 and an upregulation of apoptosis-related markers in the high BLM group, indicating that bleomycin potentially disrupts tumor cell survival by affecting key signaling pathways.

CLEC4M is associated with poor prognosis and promotes cisplatin resistance in NSCLC patients.

J Cancer

October 2019

Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha 410008, P. R. China.

Article Synopsis
  • Cisplatin is a primary treatment for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but resistance to it remains a significant challenge.
  • Recent research indicates that CLEC4M, a protein linked to tumor development, may affect both patient prognosis and cisplatin sensitivity in NSCLC cases.
  • The study shows that CLEC4M contributes to cisplatin resistance by preventing cell death and enhancing DNA repair, suggesting that targeting CLEC4M could help improve treatment outcomes for NSCLC patients resistant to cisplatin.
