Randomized Controlled Trials for Post-COVID-19 Conditions: A Systematic Review.

Post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) syndrome or condition (PCS) is defined as new onset symptoms for at least three months following COVID-19 infection that has persisted for at least two months. Given the global sequelae of COVID-19, there is an urgent need for effective PCS interventions. The aim of this study was to systematically review all interventions for PCS tested in randomized controlled trials.

Uterine fibroids and Black people of African descent globally: a scoping review protocol.

Introduction: Evidence suggests that when adjusted for age and other factors such as Body Mass Index, age of first pregnancy, years since last pregnancy and alcohol consumption, Black women are three times more likely to suffer from fibroids compared with the general population. When compared with the general population, Black women experience larger uterine fibroids with an earlier onset and more frequent and severe symptoms debilitating symptoms. Reported symptoms include pelvic pain, bladder issues, and heavy and/or abnormal menstrual bleeding.

Coincident Thyrotoxic Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis and Cardiomyopathy.

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) and thyrotoxic cardiomyopathy (TCMP) are potentially lethal complications of thyrotoxicosis that require emergent recognition and management to attenuate significant morbidity and mortality. We present the case of a 23-year-old Asian male with no prior medical history who developed TPP with coincident TCMP, which was successfully managed with antithyroid and heart failure therapies. The clinician should be aware of the diagnosis and treatment of these 2 life-threatening conditions in a hyperthyroid state.

A systems thinking framework for understanding rising childhood obesity in the Caribbean.

Objective: The aim of this study is to develop a systems thinking framework to describe the common complexities of childhood obesity in the Caribbean region and identify potential areas of intervention.

Methods: Group model building (GMB) is a form of systems science. Trained GMB facilitators in Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago convened a group of multi-disciplinary stakeholders in a series of virtual meetings in 2021 to elaborate a hypothesis of the system driving childhood obesity represented by causal loop diagrams (CLD).

Using eGFR and Albumin Creatinine Ratio as an Initial Screening Tool in Trinidadian Primary Care to Identify High-risk Population for CKD: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health burden and is often undiagnosed in the primary care setting. Untested and untreated, this often leads to renal failure and dialysis.

Materials And Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of adults aged 20 years and over, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus and/or hypertension, with no previous history or record of CKD, and attending three chronic disease clinics in the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA).

Early and Late Effects of Low-Dose X-ray Exposure in Human Fibroblasts: DNA Repair Foci, Proliferation, Autophagy, and Senescence.

The effects of low-dose radiation exposure remain a controversial topic in radiation biology. This study compares early (0.5, 4, 24, 48, and 72 h) and late (5, 10, and 15 cell passages) post-irradiation changes in γH2AX, 53BP1, pATM, and p-p53 (Ser-15) foci, proliferation, autophagy, and senescence in primary fibroblasts exposed to 100 and 2000 mGy X-ray radiation.

Suspected Diphtheria Toxoid and Tetanus Toxoid (dTdap) Booster Vaccine-Induced Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).

We describe a case of a 40-year-old South Asian woman who presented with symptoms suggestive of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) following a diphtheria toxoid and tetanus toxoid (dTdap) booster vaccination administered one week prior. The patient's POTS responded favorably to treatment with low-dose fludrocortisone and ivabradine. Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for POTS as a possible vaccine adverse event (VAE) post-dTdap booster inoculation and be aware of appropriate management strategies.

Intersectoral collaboration in the COVID-19 response in Latin America and the Caribbean.

World Health Organization (WHO) / Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) encouraged the utilization of whole-of-society and whole-of-government strategic approaches to increase countries' resilience towards mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Strategies included the implementation of multi-sectoral, multi-partner and multi-stakeholder planning, coordination, consultation, and action. We reviewed the experiences of three Latin American and Caribbean countries, related to the implementation of collaborative strategies in tackling COVID-19, specifically the nature of the collaboration, the dynamics and the stakeholders involved.

Potential Impact of COVID-19 on Medical Career Aspirations of Prospective Students.

This article describes the evolving landscape of medical education in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the renewed importance of public health, mental well-being, and career choices among medical students. The pandemic has prompted a significant shift in medical student's career aspirations, highlighting the need for mental health support mechanisms within the medical education framework. Medical students' career choices are influenced directly and indirectly by the challenges and experiences of the pandemic era, which are discussed in this article under four key themes: traditional values, global health interests and disparities, developing trends, and digital healthcare.

Tree nuts demand analysis using the LA-AIDS model: A case of the Indian economy paradox.

India is one of the world's largest producers of tree nuts, yet it paradoxically remains a net importer of these commodities. This study aims to analyze the demand for imported tree nuts in India, motivated by the need to understand the factors contributing to this imbalance. The primary objective is to calculate income elasticities and own- and cross-price elasticities for five categories of imported tree nuts using the linear approximate almost ideal demand system model.

Prevalence and Pattern of Tooth Impaction: A Radiographic Study in a Trinidadian Population.

Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the prevalence and patterns of impacted third molars in a Trinidadian population.

Methods: A total of 1500 orthopantomograms (OPG) taken at the School of Dentistry, University of the West Indies, from 2008 to 2019 in patients between 15 and 67 years old were evaluated. From the data collected, the prevalence of third molar impaction, the parameters of gender, angulation, level of impaction, and associated pathologies were evaluated.

Exploring the role of viscosity-vaso-occlusion and haemolysis-endothelial dysfunction in pain sensitization among Jamaicans with sickle cell disease.

Viscosity-vaso-occlusion (VVO) and haemolysis-endothelial dysfunction (HED) are pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical subphenotypes of sickle cell disease (SCD). Recurrent vaso-occlusive crises (VOC) may lead to neuroplastic changes and pain sensitization. Among 257 SCD participants, we assessed the relationship of subphenotypes with pain sensitivity using quantitative sensory testing to identify heat pain thresholds (HPT) and pressure pain thresholds (PPT).

A DFT study on the heterolytic bond cleavage of hydrazones under cathodic conditions in acetonitrile.

Context: Hydrazones have been studied for a myriad of chemical and physiochemical properties, such as sensors, chelators and numerous biological activities. Experimental data indicates that hydrazones are unstable under cathodic potentials irrespective of the solvent. The single electron reduction of hydrazones to produce radical anions result in unstable species that cleaves at the N-N bond in a heterolytic manner.

Social support and ideal cardiovascular health in urban Jamaica: A cross-sectional study.

Recent studies have suggested that high levels of social support can encourage better health behaviours and result in improved cardiovascular health. In this study we evaluated the association between social support and ideal cardiovascular health among urban Jamaicans. We conducted a cross-sectional study among urban residents in Jamaica's south-east health region.

Recurrent Hypoglycemia in a Non-diabetic Female: A Case Study on Doege-Potter Syndrome.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) are mesenchymal cell tumors that may arise from any site throughout the body. A small percentage of patients with SFT develop non-islet cell tumor-induced hypoglycemia (NICTH), eponymously termed Doege-Potter Syndrome (DPS). DPS is characterized by severe, refractory hypoinsulinemic hypoglycemia.

Failure to progress: breast and prostate cancer cell lines in developing targeted therapies.

Developing anticancer drugs from preclinical to clinical takes approximately a decade in a cutting-edge biomedical lab and still 97% of most fail at clinical trials. Cell line usage is critical in expediting the advancement of anticancer therapies. Yet developing appropriate cell lines has been challenging and overcoming these obstacles whilst implementing a systematic approach of utilizing 3D models that recapitulate the tumour microenvironment is prudent.

Research Background: While the use of chemical preservatives in meat may appear to be tremendously advantageous, they have long been purported to increase the risk of incidence of certain types of cancers. Consequently, many people have opted for minimally processed alternatives. This consumer shift has placed substantial pressure on the food industry to implement more natural alternatives to these synthetic preservatives in the meat industry.

Hoof wall masses removal in 30 standing sedated horses: Surgical technique, postoperative complications and long-term outcome.
