Article Synopsis
  • The increasing use of e-cigarettes among children and adolescents raises global health concerns, prompting a study on Sydney GPs' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding this issue.
  • A pilot study was conducted with 53 GPs using an electronic questionnaire, revealing strong awareness of respiratory risks but less knowledge about cardiac effects and burns, along with minimal discussions on e-cigarettes in practice.
  • The study concluded that while GPs have some understanding of adverse effects, they lack comprehensive knowledge and confidence to address e-cigarette use among youth, highlighting the need for educational programs to improve their skills and awareness.

Background: Children with a cleft palate (with or without a cleft of the lip) often require speech-language therapy (SLT) services to achieve age-appropriate speech. For many children, this involves attending SLT services delivered by both specialised cleft team speech-language therapists (SLTs) and a local, community or school-based SLT. Given that these two different SLTs are typically involved in the child's care, it is important to ensure that effective communication, coordination and collaboration occur between them.

Department of Cardiology, Liverpool Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; The University of New South Wales, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; The University of Western Sydney, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Women and patients with incomplete revascularization (IR) have a worse prognosis after ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, the extent to which IR affects outcomes for women with STEMI compared with men is not well characterized. Thus, we examined late outcomes of 589 consecutive STEMI patients who received percutaneous coronary intervention and assessed SYNTAX scores (SS), both at baseline and after all procedures (residual SS).

School of Science and Health, The University of Western Sydney, Locked Bag 1797, Penrith, New South Wales, Australia. Electronic address:

Copper is a metal ion present in all organisms, where it has well-known roles in association with proteins and enzymes essential for cellular processes. In the early decades of the twentieth century copper was shown to influence mammalian reproductive biology, and it was subsequently shown to exert effects primarily at the level of the pituitary gland and/or hypothalamic regions of the brain. Furthermore, it has been reported that copper can interact with key neuropeptides in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, notably gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and neurokinin B.

Window of opportunity therapies, which involve short-term administration of systemic therapy between cancer diagnosis and surgery, have raised significant interest in recent years as a mean of assessing the sensitivity of a patient's cancer to therapy prior to surgery. There is now compelling evidence that in patients with early stage hormone-receptor positive breast cancer, a 2-week preoperative treatment with standard hormone therapies in a preoperative window period provides important prognostic information, which in turn helps to aid decision-making regarding treatment options. Changes in short-term biomarker endpoints such as cell proliferation measured by Ki-67 can act as surrogate markers of long-term outcomes.

Chromosome 17q21-ter is commonly gained in neuroblastoma, but it is unclear which gene in the region is important for tumorigenesis. The JMJD6 gene at 17q21-ter activates gene transcription. Here we show that JMJD6 forms protein complexes with N-Myc and BRD4, and is important for E2F2, N-Myc and c-Myc transcription.

Introduction: Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide, with prevalence doubling in the past 14 years. To date, prognostic screening tools display poor discrimination and offer no net benefit of screening over and above a 'treat all' approach. Characteristics of the primary sensory (S1) and motor (M1) cortices may predict the development of chronic LBP, yet the prognostic potential of these variables remains unknown.

Chemoresistance is a major challenge in ovarian cancer treatment, resulting in poor survival rates. Identifying markers of treatment response is imperative for improving outcome while minimizing unnecessary side effects. We have previously demonstrated that expression of transducin-like enhancer of split 3 (TLE3) is associated with favorable progression-free survival in taxane-treated ovarian cancer patients with nonserous histology.

Colorectal cancer is a major cause of cancer death and approximately 20% arises within serrated polyps, which are under-recognized and poorly understood. Human serrated colorectal polyps frequently exhibit both oncogenic BRAF mutation and widespread DNA methylation changes, which are important in silencing genes restraining neoplastic progression. Here, we investigated whether in vivo induction of mutant Braf is sufficient to result in coordinated promoter methylation changes for multiple cancer-related genes.

Introduction: Chronic low back pain (LBP) is a common and costly health problem yet current treatments demonstrate at best, small effects. The concurrent application of treatments with synergistic clinical and mechanistic effects may improve outcomes in chronic LBP. This pilot trial aims to (1) determine the feasibility, safety and perceived patient response to a combined transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and sensorimotor retraining intervention in chronic LBP and (2) provide data to support a sample size calculation for a fully powered trial should trends of effectiveness be present.

Low-grade serous ovarian carcinomas (LGSC) are associated with a poor response to chemotherapy and are molecularly characterized by RAS pathway activation. Using exome and whole genome sequencing, we identified recurrent mutations in the protein translational regulator and in , and RAS pathway mutations were mutually exclusive; however, we found significant co-occurrence of mutations in and Missense mutations were clustered at the N-terminus of the protein in a region associated with its role in ensuring translational initiation fidelity. Coexpression of mutant and proteins promoted proliferation and clonogenic survival in LGSC cells, providing the first example of co-occurring, growth-promoting mutational events in ovarian cancer.

Guttiferone K impedes cell cycle re-entry of quiescent prostate cancer cells via stabilization of FBXW7 and subsequent c-MYC degradation.

Cell Death Dis

June 2016

Discipline of Endocrinology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Charles Perkins Centre, Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Cell cycle re-entry by quiescent cancer cells is an important mechanism for cancer progression. While high levels of c-MYC expression are sufficient for cell cycle re-entry, the modality to block c-MYC expression, and subsequent cell cycle re-entry, is limited. Using reversible quiescence rendered by serum withdrawal or contact inhibition in PTEN(null)/p53(WT) (LNCaP) or PTEN(null)/p53(mut) (PC-3) prostate cancer cells, we have identified a compound that is able to impede cell cycle re-entry through c-MYC.
