Polymers (Basel)

January 2018

Department of Biologic and Materials Science, School of Dentistry, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, USA.

In this study, we investigated the aggregation behaviors of amphiphilic poly(vinyl ether)s with antimicrobial activity. We synthesized a di-block poly(vinyl ether), B38, composed of cationic primary amine and hydrophobic isobutyl (Bu) side chains, which previously showed antimicrobial activity against . B38 showed similar uptake behaviors as those for a hydrophobic fluorescent dye, 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene, to counterpart polymers including homopolymer H44 and random copolymer R40, indicating that the Bu block does not form strong hydrophobic domains.

SLC19A3 deficiency, also called thiamine metabolism dysfunction syndrome-2 (THMD2; OMIM 607483), is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder caused by mutations in SLC19A3, the gene encoding thiamine transporter 2. To investigate the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration in SLC19A3 deficiency and whether administration of high-dose thiamine prevents neurodegeneration, we generated homozygous Slc19a3 E314Q knock-in (KI) mice harboring the mutation corresponding to the human SLC19A3 E320Q, which is associated with the severe form of THMD2. Homozygous KI mice and previously reported homozygous Slc19a3 knock-out (KO) mice fed a thiamine-restricted diet (thiamine: 0.

We describe efficient visible- and near-infrared (vis/NIR) light-driven photocatalytic properties of hybrids of CuO and plasmonic Cu arrays. The CuO/Cu arrays were prepared simply by allowing a Cu half-shell array to stand in an oxygen atmosphere for 3 h, which was prepared by depositing Cu on two-dimensional colloidal crystals with a diameter of 543 or 224 nm. The localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) of the arrays were strongly excited at 866 and 626 nm, respectively, at which the imaginary part of the dielectric function of Cu is small.

Introduction: We examined effects of high-intensity training on chemically induced aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in rat colon. We also investigated mechanisms that may underlie the results obtained, with a focus on secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC), which has been proposed as an exercise-related factor of colon cancer prevention.

Methods: After an administration of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine, F344 rats executed high-intensity intermittent swimming training (HIIST) (twelve 20-s swimming with a weight [16% body weight] with 10-s pauses between the bouts) 5 d·wk for 4 wk.

Background And Objectives: Arterial stiffness is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and it is considered to be affected by dietary intake. However, few studies have examined the relationship between major dietary patterns and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) among Japanese middle-aged subjects. We studied whether major dietary patterns were associated with baPWV in this population.

Article Synopsis
  • Breast-fed infants typically have a microbiota rich in bifidobacteria, largely supported by human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) that encourage their growth.
  • The study identified a new glycoside hydrolase family (GH136) through structural analysis of an enzyme (LnbX) from Bifidobacterium longum, crucial for metabolizing a specific HMO.
  • Findings suggest that lnbX is essential for the survival of B. longum in the infant gut, highlighting evolutionary aspects of human-bifidobacterial symbiosis in breastfeeding.

Experimental evidence suggests that specular reflectance and glossy appearance help amplify warning signals.

Sci Rep

March 2017

Centre of Excellence in Biological Interactions, University of Jyväskylä, Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, PO Box 35, 40014 University of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä, Finland.

Specular reflection appears as a bright spot or highlight on any smooth glossy convex surface and is caused by a near mirror-like reflectance off the surface. Convex shapes always provide the ideal geometry for highlights, areas of very strong reflectance, regardless of the orientation of the surface or position of the receiver. Despite highlights and glossy appearance being common in chemically defended insects, their potential signalling function is unknown.

High salinity leads to accumulation of soil organic carbon in mangrove soil.

Chemosphere

June 2017

Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Kobe University, 1 Rokkodai, Nada, Kobe, Hyogo 657-8501, Japan. Electronic address:

Although mangrove forests are one of the most well-known soil organic carbon (SOC) sinks, the mechanism underlying SOC accumulation is relatively unknown. High net primary production (NPP) along with the typical bottom-heavy biomass allocation and low soil respiration (SR) have been considered to be responsible for SOC accumulation. However, an emerging paradigm postulates that SR is severely underestimated because of the leakage of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in groundwater.

Subtypes of Ovarian Cancer and Ovarian Cancer Screening.

Diagnostics (Basel)

March 2017

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Kyoto University, Graduate School of Medicine, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8507, Japan.

Ovarian cancer is the foremost cause of gynecological cancer death in the developed world, as it is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage. In this paper we discuss current issues, the efficacy and problems associated with ovarian cancer screening, and compare the characteristics of ovarian cancer subtypes. There are two types of ovarian cancer: Type I carcinomas, which are slow-growing, indolent neoplasms thought to arise from a precursor lesion, which are relatively common in Asia; and Type II carcinomas, which are clinically aggressive neoplasms that can develop de novo from serous tubal intraepithelial carcinomas (STIC) and/or ovarian surface epithelium and are common in Europe and the USA.

Lycopene has a large number of geometric isomers caused by E/Z isomerization at arbitrary sites within the 11 conjugated double bonds, offering varying characteristics related to features such as antioxidant capacity and bioavailability. However, the geometric structures of only a few lycopene Z-isomers have been thoroughly identified from natural sources. In this study, seven multi-Z-isomers of lycopene, (9Z,13'Z)-, (5Z,13Z,9'Z)-, (9Z,9'Z)-, (5Z,13'Z)-, (5Z,9'Z)-, (5Z,9Z,5'Z)-, and (5Z,9Z)-lycopene, were obtained from tomato samples by thermal isomerization, and then isolated by elaborate chromatography, and fully assigned using proton nuclear magnetic resonance.

We demonstrated the usefulness of Cu light-harvesting plasmonic nanoantennae for the development of inexpensive and efficient artificial organic photoelectric conversion systems. The systems consisted of the stacked structures of layers of porphyrin as a dye molecule, oxidation-suppressing layers, and plasmonic Cu arrayed electrodes. To accurately evaluate the effect of Cu nanoantenna on the porphyrin photocurrent, the production of CuO by the spontaneous oxidation of the electrode surfaces, which can act as a photoexcited species under visible light irradiation, was effectively suppressed by inserting the ultrathin linking layers consisting of 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid, titanium oxide, and poly(vinyl alcohol) between the electrode surface and porphyrin molecules.
