Dietary content during pregnancy is important because it is necessary for the growth of the fetus. With the assumption that the nutritional status of the fetus can be monitored by measuring amino acid concentrations in the amniotic fluid, we investigated whether the habitual dietary intake of pregnant women affected the composition of the amniotic fluid and the significance of performing amniotic fluid analysis. In order to raise the possibility of the practical use of thermoresponsive hydrogels in various fields, it is imperative to achieve on-demand control of responsive behavior especially by using a simple synthetic method with common monomers. To this end, we synthesized various hydrophilic/hydrophobic copolymer hydrogels from common acrylamide derivatives and acrylate monomers via free radical copolymerization, and examined the correlation between the structure and the swelling properties of the obtained gels, specifically from the viewpoint of the monomer sequence in the network chains and the affinity to water molecules. The obtained gels with a hydrophobic acrylamide monomer were shown to exhibit a sharp volume change in water upon heating at suitable monomer compositions.

Recently, the development of bimetallic nanoparticles with functional properties has been attempted extensively but with limited control over their morphological and structural properties. The reason was the inability to control the kinetics of the reduction reaction in most liquid-phase syntheses. B-group vitamins are required in amino acid catabolism, and recent findings suggest that urine 2-oxo acids, catabolites of amino acid, could be functional biomarkers indicating the nutritional status of B-group vitamins. To clarify the relationship between B-group vitamins and urine 2-oxo acids, we investigated the effects of B-group vitamin administration on daily changes in urinary amounts of 2-oxo acids in humans. Twenty-nine young Japanese women collected 24-h urine samples for 8 d, and took B-group vitamins for 7 d beginning on the second day of urine collection.

In situ sensing with wireless digital-data transfer is a potential processing scheme that works very closely to the location of an event monitored by a sensor and converts the sensor's raw output into digitized and informative small-volume bits, as suggested by recent proposals for edge computing and the Internet of Things (IoT). Colour perception may be a target of in situ sensor data acquisition; however, in contrast to from other sensing devices, colour sensors that detect visible light signals are usually located away from light-emitting sources, collecting light transmitting through the space and attenuating it in some manner. For example, in a vacuum chamber whose gas pressure is much less than the ambient atmosphere in which the sensors usually work, there are many veiled light sources, such as discharge plasma, for various industrial purposes including nanoscale manufacturing.

The preparation of a series of dibenzo- and tetrabenzo-fused fluoreno[3,2-]fluorenes is disclosed, and the diradicaloid properties of these molecules are compared with those of a similar, previously reported series of anthracene-based diradicaloids. Insights on the diradical mode of delocalization tuning by constitutional isomerism of the external naphthalenes has been explored by means of the physical approach (dissection of the electronic properties in terms of electronic repulsion and transfer integral) of diradicals. This study has also been extended to the redox species of the two series of compounds and found that the radical cations have the same stabilization mode by delocalization that the neutral diradicals while the radical anions, contrarily, are stabilized by aromatization of the central core.
