Reproductive interference can lead to the exclusive distribution of species. Reports on reproductive interference between alien species are scarce, although alien species are becoming more abundant and evaluations of the interference between aliens and its influence on community structure are essential. We therefore investigated the presence of interference in two alien species of Veronica, V.

Various types of small-scale wastewater treatment systems are widely used in rural areas, and life-cycle assessment (LCA) should be performed to evaluate their environmental performance. In this study, septic systems were first classified into five categories based on their wastewater treatment performance. Effluent samples from actual systems were collected, and their water qualities were determined.

The present study evaluated the mechanism by which NBs maintain the freshness of cut flowers by keeping cut chrysanthemum ( Ramat.) flowers at the bud stage in vase water containing air NBs.

A new diradical based on diindenocarbazole or difluorenopyrrole was synthesized and experimentally characterized by optical, electrochemical, and magnetic techniques, as well as quantum chemical calculations. The isomerism of these structures tunes the diradical character and the associated properties, representing a unique case of such important modulation. A full study of the electronic structure was carried out considering the perturbative interactions between different canonical forms as well as the anti-aromatic character of the molecular cores.

Atomic arrangement in Cu-Pd alloy nanoparticles (NPs) has been reported to influence the catalytic activity, but they have yet to be studied in detail. Unlike previous studies, where the B2 structure Cu-Pd NPs are obtained by heat treating the A1 structure, this study reports the one-pot direct syntheses of A1- and B2-structured Cu-Pd NPs using an alcohol reduction method. The alcohol reduction technique facilitates the kinetic control of the reduction reaction by selecting the appropriate alcohol type and complexing agent to delay the reduction of easily reducible metallic elements to realize control over the reduction kinetics for coreduction.

Polythiophene-modified densely packed C-ethylenediamine adduct microparticle films were prepared using a combination of liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation of the adduct microparticles and electrochemical polymerization of 2,2'-bithiophene. The amount of polythiophene was varied as a function of scanning cycles of the applied potential during electrochemical polymerization. Fluorescence-emission properties of these composite films suggested the role of C-ethylenediamine adduct microparticle film as a photosensitizer in addition to an electron acceptor for polythiophene.

Of late, internet addiction among adolescents has become a serious problem, with increased internet use. Previous research suggests that the more people become addicted to the internet, the more they isolate themselves from society. Conversely, it has been suggested that abundant social capital (the networks of relationships among people who live and work in a particular society) protects people from becoming addicted to the internet.

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is a means of exchanging genetic material asexually. The process by which horizontally transferred genes are domesticated by the host genome is of great interest but is not well understood. In this study, we determined the telomere-to-telomere genome sequence of the wheat-infecting Pyricularia oryzae strain Br48.

Objective: We explored the relationship of dietary intake of fatty acids with chronic kidney disease (CKD) according to glycemic status in Japanese people.
Methods: A total of 1031 participants aged ≥40 y were included in this population-based, cross-sectional study. A validated self-administered diet history questionnaire was used to measure the dietary intakes of fat and fatty acids, including omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

We have developed a sensor for simultaneous measurement of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) under liquid environments. The sensor, which is based on the qPlus sensor, is equipped with an insulated conductive tip. Owing to its electrical insulation except for the tip apex, the developed sensor enabled simultaneous detection of tip-sample interaction force and tunneling current, suppressing the Faradaic leakage current.

We investigated an interaction between bitterlings and a parasitic leech Hemiclepsis kasmiana in freshwater mussel hosts. We found that leeches fed on bitterling eggs and embryos; this may exert a considerable negative effect on bitterling fitness. Host choices by females of three bitterling species may be differently affected by the presence of leeches within mussels; Tanakia limbata apparently avoided laying eggs in infested mussels while T.

In this study, a photothermal therapy agent that works efficiently in the second biological transparency window was developed based on the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance of symmetry-broken open-shell nanostructures of low-cost Cu (CuOSNs). The strong LSP resonance and superior photothermal conversion ability in the second biological transparency window were achieved by generating the dipolar bonding mode due to the plasmon hybridization between the nanoshell dipole and the nanohole dipole at the opening edge in CuOSNs derived from the symmetry breaking of a Cu nanoshell. Oxidative dissolution of CuOSNs in water was significantly suppressed by successive coating with the self-assembled monolayer of 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid and a thin silica layer.

A series of boron difluoride (BF) complexes of azinylcarbazoles 1b-1h were synthesized, and the effects of the structure of azine moieties on the photophysical and electrochemical properties of the BF complexes were clarified. UV-vis analysis of 1b with quinoline, 1c with isoquinoline, and fully fused 1d revealed that fusion with a benzene ring to a pyridylcarbazole BF complex (1a) resulted in red shifts of longest-maximum absorption wavelengths (). UV-vis analysis of 1e and 1f with pyrimidine, 1g with pyridazine, and 1h with pyrazine revealed that substitution of a carbon atom to a nitrogen atom in 1a also resulted in red shifts of .

We have demonstrated site-selective radical reactions of the kinetically stable open-shell singlet diradicaloids difluoreno[3,4-:4',3'-]thiophene (DFTh) and difluoreno[3,4-:4',3'-]furan (DFFu) with tributyltin hydride (HSn(-Bu)) and azo-based radical initiators. Treatment of these diradicaloids with HSn(-Bu) induces hydrogenation at the -carbon in the five-membered rings, while treatment with 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) induces substitution at the carbon atoms in the peripheral six-membered rings. We have also developed one-pot substitution/hydrogenation reactions of DFTh/DFFu with various azo-based radical initiators and HSn(-Bu).

The technique most widely used to quantitatively measure leg edema is only a pitting edema method. It has recently become possible to digitize B-mode ultrasound images and accurately quantify their brightness using an image-analysis software program. The purpose of this study was to find new indices of the grade of leg skin, to study whether or not analyses of the subcutaneous layer of leg skin on ultrasound images using image-editing software program can be used to evaluate it and to digitize it.

First, we attempted to recombine the Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) pyrG (ura3) gene homologously by introducing a donor vector containing a carboxin resistance gene (lecbxR) flanked by homologous sequences of pyrG into protoplasts of the fungus. However, all the carboxin-resistant transformants only contained ectopic insertions of the exogenous gene and no homologous insertions. Agaricomycetes are generally known for their low efficiency of homologous recombination, and a similar result was shown for L.

Phosphate recovery from wastewater using readily available biowaste-based adsorbents is beneficial for both eutrophication control and waste management. Bamboo char has a high-density porous structure and eggshell contains CaCO with high affinity for phosphate. The combination of calcined bamboo and eggshell is a potential adsorbent for P recovery that has not been tested previously.

Little is known about how the strength of biodegradable polymers changes during decomposition. This study investigated the changes in the tensile properties of polybutylene succinate (PBS) and basalt-fiber (BF)-reinforced PBS (PBS-BF) composite sheets during degradation in bacterial solutions. Seven days after the start of the experiment, the elongation at break of the PBS specimens decreased significantly, and the PBS-BF composite specimens were characterized by barely any change in ultimate tensile strength (UTS) after immersion in the bacteria-free medium for 7 and 56 days.
