In the scaling down of electronic devices, functional oxides with strongly correlated electron system provide advantages to conventional semiconductors, namely, huge switching owing to their phase transition and high carrier density, which guarantee their rich functionalities even at the 10 nm scale. However, understanding how their functionalities behave at a scale of 10 nm order is still a challenging issue. Here, we report the construction of the well-defined (La,Pr,Ca)MnO3 epitaxial oxide nanowall wire by combination of nanolithography and subsequent thin-film growth, which allows the direct investigation of its insulator-metal transition (IMT) at the single domain scale.

We reported previously that the pellagragenic property of corn protein is not only low l-tryptophan concentration but also the lower conversion percentage of l-tryptophan to nicotinamide; the amino acid composition greatly affected the conversion percentage. The amino acid value of wheat protein is lower than that of rice protein. In the present study, we compare the conversion percentages of l-tryptophan to nicotinamide between wheat protein and rice protein diets in growing rats.

Magnetic responses of superparamagnetic nanoparticles to high-frequency AC magnetic fields with sufficiently large amplitudes are numerically simulated to exactly clarify the phenomena occurring in magnetic particle imaging. When the magnetic anisotropy energy inevitable in actual nanoparticles is taken into account in considering the magnetic potential, larger nanoparticles exhibit a delayed response to alternations of the magnetic fields. This kind of delay is rather remarkable in the lower-amplitude range of the field, where the assistance by the Zeeman energy to thermally activated magnetization reversal is insufficient.

The tryptophan metabolite, kynurenic acid (KYNA), is a preferential antagonist of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor at endogenous brain concentrations. The conversion of tryptophan (Trp) → nicotinamide (Nam) is an important pathway for supplying vitamin niacin. We reported the following two phenomena: (1) severe food restriction led to an increase in the Trp → Nam conversion compared with free-access control group; (2) the conversion of Trp → Nam is also increased by vitamin B1 deficiency compared with free-access control group. In 2009, a novel larval trematode of the family Gorgoderidae was found in the gonads of Nodularia douglasiae (Unionidae) from the lower reaches of the Yodo River, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. This is the first collection of trematodes in a unionid mussel in Japan. We investigated the morphology and life cycle of the trematode, and conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis with other gorgoderid species, both those collected in the Yodo River water system and those reported in the literature.

We present a phosphor nanoparticle that shows both upconversion luminescence (UCL) and cathodoluminescence (CL). With this particle, low-autofluorescence, deep-tissue and wide-field fluorescence imaging can be achieved with nanometer-order high-spatial-resolution imaging. We synthesized Y2O3:Tm,Yb nanophosphors that emit visible and near-infrared UCL under 980 nm irradiation and blue CL via electron beam excitation.

We investigated the contribution percentage of tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase (TDO) and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) to the conversion of D-tryptophan to nicotinamide in TDO-knockout mice. The calculated percentage conversions indicated that TDO and IDO oxidized 70 and 30%, respectively, of the dietary L-tryptophan. These results indicate that both TDO and IDO biosynthesize nicotinamide from D-tryptophan and L-tryptophan in mice.
