Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the regulation mechanism of HOTAIR on nucleus pulposus cell (NPC) apoptosis induced by inflammatory cytokines.
Methods: QRT-PCR was performed to analyze the expression of HOTAIR and miR-34a. Safranin O staining and immunohistochemical staining were measured to identify NPCs.

Sperm proteins presumably play critical roles in reproduction, but in many non-model animals their identities are unknown. A total of 147 sperm proteins from the echiuran worm Urechis unicinctus, the first sperm proteome in the phylum Annelida, are reported. The echiuran sperm proteome can be classified into diverse functional groups: energy metabolism (31%), protein synthesis and degradation (18%), spermatogenesis and sperm motility (12%), signal pathway (11%), ion channel and transport proteins (6%), cytoskeleton (4%), immunity and stress responses (3%), and fertilization (1%).

To analyze the learning curve of uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy for the treatment of resectable lung cancer. The clinical data of 160 patients with resectable lung cancer who underwent uniportal VATS lobectomy by a single surgical team between May 2016 and April 2017 at Department of Thoracic Surgery, the First Affiliated Hospital of the University of Science and Technology of China were analyzed retrospectively. The study group consisted of 90 male and 70 female patients with age of 28 to 84 years (median: 62 years).

Mixing cationic polymer chains with anionic DNA chains in solution results in the polymer/DNA complexes (also known as polyplexes). We recently confirmed that it is those noncomplexed cationic chains free in the mixture that promote the gene transfection, leading to a hypothesis: free cationic chains adsorbed on various anionic membranes interfere with the signal protein interaction, disrupt the intervesicular fusion, and block the endolysosome pathway so that the plasmid DNA (pDNA) chains have a higher chance to enter the nucleus. Accordingly, we design and synthesize linear cationic-hydrophobic-cationic triblock polylysine (K)- b-polyleucine (L)- b-polylysine (K) as free cationic chains by using natural protamine to condense the pDNA.

Statistical speech reconstruction for larynx-related dysphonia has achieved good performance using Gaussian mixture models and, more recently, restricted Boltzmann machine arrays; however, deep neural network (DNN)-based systems have been hampered by the limited amount of training data available from individual voice-loss patients. The authors propose a novel DNN structure that allows a partially supervised training approach on spectral features from smaller data sets, yielding very good results compared with the current state-of-the-art.

Optical lithography, the enabling process for defining features, has been widely used in semiconductor industry and many other nanotechnology applications. We report the new insight into the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) induced inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa, the dominant algae which caused harmful cyanobacterial blooms in many developing countries. In contrast with the previous work, we employed flow cytometry to examine the algal cells, so that we could assess the dead and living cells with more accuracy, and distinguish an intermediate state of algal cells which were verified as apoptotic. Our results showed that the numbers of both dead and apoptotic cells increased with DBD treatment delay time, and hydrogen peroxide produced by DBD was the main reason for the time-delayed inactivation effect.

Accurate chromosome segregation during mitosis requires the physical separation of sister chromatids which depends on correct position of mitotic spindle relative to membrane cortex. Although recent work has identified the role of PLK1 in spindle orientation, the mechanisms underlying PLK1 signaling in spindle positioning and orientation have not been fully illustrated. Here, we identified a conserved signaling axis in which NDR1 kinase activity is regulated by PLK1 in mitosis.

The brain effortlessly recognizes objects even when the visual information belonging to an object is widely separated, as well demonstrated by the Kanizsa-type illusory contours (ICs), in which a contour is perceived despite the fragments of the contour being separated by gaps. Such large-range visual completion has long been thought to be preattentive, whereas its dependence on top-down influences remains unclear. Here, we report separate modulations by spatial attention and task relevance on the neural activities in response to the ICs.

Introduction: Destructive repair is the pathological feature of ONFH characterized with the elevated vascular permeability and persistent bone resorption, which is associated with higher VEGF expression, activated c-Src, and vascular leakage. Activated c-Src also participates in mediating endothelial permeability and osteoclasts activity. However, the molecular mechanism of the VEGF and c-Src contributing to the destructive repair process remains unknown.

Learning a satisfactory object detector generally requires sufficient training data to cover the most variations of the object. In this paper, we show that the performance of object detector is severely degraded when training examples are limited. We propose an approach to handle this issue by exploring a set of pretrained auxiliary detectors for other categories.

This paper investigates the roles of a three-axis accelerometer, surface electromyography sensors and a webcam for dynamic gesture recognition. A decision-level multiple sensor fusion method based on action elements is proposed to distinguish a set of 20 kinds of dynamic hand gestures. Experiments are designed and conducted to collect three kinds of sensor data stream simultaneously during gesture implementation and compare the performance of different subsets in gesture recognition.

Chromosome segregation in mitosis is orchestrated by dynamic interaction between spindle microtubules and the kinetochore. Septin (SEPT) belongs to a conserved family of polymerizing GTPases localized to the metaphase spindle during mitosis. Previous study showed that SEPT2 depletion results in chromosome mis-segregation correlated with a loss of centromere-associated protein E (CENP-E) from the kinetochores of congressing chromosomes (1).

By using a surface-modified templating method, Fe(2)O(3)@polypyrrole (PPy) core/shell spindles have been successfully prepared in this paper. The Fe(2)O(3) particles with spindle morphology were initially fabricated as core materials. During cell division, chromosome segregation is orchestrated by the interaction of spindle microtubules with the centromere. A dramatic remodeling of interpolar microtubules into an organized central spindle between the separating chromatids is required for the initiation and execution of cytokinesis. Central spindle organization requires mitotic kinesins, the chromosomal passenger protein complex, and microtubule bundling protein PRC1.

A poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PEO-b-PCL) diblock copolymer was micronized into small micelle-like particles (approximately 80 nm) via dialysis-induced microphase inversion. The enzymatic biodegradation of the PCL portion of these particles in water was in situ investigated inside a recently developed novel differential refractometer. Using this refractometry method, we were able to monitor the real-time biodegradation via the refractive index change (Deltan) of the dispersion because Deltan is directly proportional to the particle mass concentration.

Using a special double-layer membrane to avoid interaction among flow fields generated by different pores, we have, for the first time, observed the predicted discontinuous first-order transition in ultrafiltration of flexible linear polymer chains. Namely, the chain could pass through a pore much smaller than its unperturbed radius only when the flow rate is higher than a certain value. When only one chain and one pore are considered in theory, such a threshold is surprisingly independent of both the chain length and the pore size.
