Quantifying the photocurrent fluctuation in quantum materials by shot noise.

Nat Commun

March 2024

College of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, China.

The DC photocurrent can detect the topology and geometry of quantum materials without inversion symmetry. Herein, we propose that the DC shot noise (DSN), as the fluctuation of photocurrent operator, can also be a diagnostic of quantum materials. Particularly, we develop the quantum theory for DSNs in gapped systems and identify the shift and injection DSNs by dividing the second-order photocurrent operator into off-diagonal and diagonal contributions, respectively.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the early clinical features of coronary artery lesion (CAL) in Kawasaki disease (KD), evaluate systemic inflammation indicators, and enhance early recognition of CAL in the acute phase of KD. A total of 314 children with KD were divided into those with CAL (CAL group) and without CAL (NCAL group) using echocardiographic results, and their clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. For KD patients, male, children aged 3 to 9 years, and those with fever longer than 6 days before intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) use were more likely to have CAL.

Inherent symmetry breaking at the interface has been fundamental to a myriad of physical effects and functionalities, such as efficient spin-charge interconversion, exotic magnetic structures and an emergent bulk photovoltaic effect. It has recently been demonstrated that interface asymmetry can induce sizable piezoelectric effects in heterostructures, even those consisting of centrosymmetric semiconductors, which provides flexibility to develop and optimize electromechanical coupling phenomena. Here, by targeted engineering of the interface symmetry, we achieve piezoelectric phenomena behaving as the electrical analogue of the negative Poisson's ratio.

Gastric cancer stem cells (GCSCs) are self-renewing tumor cells that govern chemoresistance in gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC), whereas their regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. Here, the study aims to elucidate the role of ATOH1 in the maintenance of GCSCs. The preclinical model and GAC sample analysis indicate that ATOH1 deficiency is correlated with poor GAC prognosis and chemoresistance.

September 2023

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Anhui Medical University, 81 Meishan Road, Hefei, Anhui, 230032, China.

With the deepening of research on the correlation between meteorological factors and autoimmune diseases, the relationship between climate change and dermatomyositis (DM) has come to our attention. This study aimed to explore the short-term correlation between meteorological factors and DM outpatient visits. Daily records of hospital outpatient visits for DM, air pollutants, and meteorological factor data in Hefei from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2021 were obtained.

Recently, magnetic beads (MBs) are moving toward chemiluminescence (CL) functional magnetic nanomaterials with a great potential for constructing label-free immunosensors. However, most of the CL-functionalized MBs suffer from scarce binding sites, easy aggregation, and leakage of CL reagents, which will ultimately affect the analytical performance of immunosensors. Herein, by using core-shell FeO@Au/Ag magnetic nanomaterials as a nanoplatform, a novel -(4-aminobutyl)--ethylisopropanol (ABEI) and Co dual-functionalized magnetic nanomaterial, namely, FeO@Au/Ag/ABEI/Co, with strong and stable CL emission was successfully synthesized.

Early hearing loss could cause abnormal brain development, which has been linked to the complex process known as cross-modal neuroplasticity. However, previous studies investigating the brain structure of infants with congenital severe sensorineural hearing loss (CSSHL) are scarce and have yielded inconsistent results. This study aimed to further explore the gray matter (GM) density changes in children with CSSHL.

Cold atmospheric pressure plasma: A potential physical therapy for rheumatoid arthritis hyperplastic synovium.

Int Immunopharmacol

October 2023

School of Nuclear Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei 230026, China; Institute of Advanced Technology, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei 230000, China. Electronic address:

The most significant pathological change in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is synovial hyperplasia within the joint. The production of a series of degrading enzymes and oxidative stress caused by synovial hyperplasia lead to severe bone and cartilage damage in rheumatoid joints. The core effector cell in hyperplastic synovium is fibroblast-like synovium cells, which can invade cartilage, cause inflammation, destroy joints, and show tumor-like anti-apoptosis characteristics.

There is significant variability with respect to the prognosis of nonmetastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) patients with venous tumor thrombus (VTT). By applying multiregion whole-exome sequencing on normal-tumor-thrombus-metastasis quadruples from 33 ccRCC patients, we showed that metastases were mainly seeded by VTT (81.8%) rather than primary tumors (PTs).

Article Synopsis
  • This research aims to enhance the understanding of clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) with venous tumor thrombus (VTT) to better select candidates for additional therapy based on their recurrence risk.
  • The study retrospectively analyzed data from 604 patients with nonmetastatic ccRCC, finding that discrepancies in tumor grade between the primary tumor and VTT significantly influenced disease-free survival (DFS), overall survival (OS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS).
  • Incorporating tumor grade discrepancy into predictive models improved their accuracy, indicating that this information can lead to more personalized and effective treatment strategies for patients.

Cytoskeleton remodeling mediated by circRNA-YBX1 phase separation suppresses the metastasis of liver cancer.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

July 2023

Department of General Surgery, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310016, China.

Metastasis, especially intrahepatic, is a major challenge for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment. Cytoskeleton remodeling has been identified as a vital process mediating intrahepatic spreading. Previously, we reported that HCC tumor adhesion and invasion were modulated by circular RNA (circRNA), which has emerged as an important regulator of various cellular processes and has been implicated in cancer progression.
