Background: The current management of patients with stroke with intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy is effective only when it is timely performed on an appropriately selected but minor fraction of patients. The development of novel adjunctive therapy is highly desired to reduce morbidity and mortality with stroke. Since endothelial dysfunction is implicated in the pathogenesis of stroke and is featured with suppressed endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) with concomitant nitric oxide deficiency, restoring endothelial nitric oxide represents a promising approach to treating stroke injury.

Microbial responses to stress cryptically alter natural selection on plants.

New Phytol

June 2024

Department of Biology, Indiana University, Jordan Hall, 1001 E. 3rd St., Bloomington, IN, 47405-3700, USA.

Microbial communities can rapidly respond to stress, meaning plants may encounter altered soil microbial communities in stressful environments. These altered microbial communities may then affect natural selection on plants. Because stress can cause lasting changes to microbial communities, microbes may also cause legacy effects on plant selection that persist even after the stress ceases.

A whale of a tale: whale cells evade the driving mechanism for hexavalent chromium-induced chromosome instability.

Toxicol Sci

April 2024

Wise Laboratory of Environmental and Genetic Toxicology, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky 40292, USA.

Chromosome instability, a hallmark of lung cancer, is a driving mechanism for hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] carcinogenesis in humans. Cr(VI) induces structural and numerical chromosome instability in human lung cells by inducing DNA double-strand breaks and inhibiting homologous recombination repair and causing spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) bypass and centrosome amplification. Great whales are long-lived species with long-term exposures to Cr(VI) and accumulate Cr in their tissue, but exhibit a low incidence of cancer.

Photoinduced electron spin polarization (ESP) is reported in the electronic ground states of three Pt(II) complexes comprised of two S = 1/2 nitronyl nitroxide (NN) radicals attached through different length -phenylethynyl bridges to the 3,6 positions of a catecholate (CAT, donor) and 4,4'-di--butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, acceptor). Complexes - have from 17 to 41 bonds separating NN radicals and display cw-EPR spectra consistent with || ≫ ||, || ≥ ||, and || < ||, respectively, where is the magnetic exchange coupling between NN radicals in the electronic ground state, and is the isotropic N hyperfine coupling constant. Light-induced transient EPR spectra characterized as enhanced ground-state absorption were observed for all three complexes using 532 nm pulsed laser excitation into the ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LL'CT) band of the (CAT)Pt(bpy) chromophore.

April 2024

Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, The University of New Mexico, MSC03 2060, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87131-0001, United States.

The electronic structure of the bis(dioxolene) bridging ligand -- is responsive to metal-ligand magnetic exchange coupling. Comparison of the crystal structure of to that of indicates an open-shell biradical ground state for the dinuclear Ni(II) complex compared to the closed-shell quinoidal character found in the dinuclear Zn(II) complex. Consistent with a comparison of bond lengths obtained by X-ray diffraction, the analysis of the variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data for crystalline yields reduced SQ-SQ radical-radical magnetic exchange coupling ( = -203 cm) compared to that of ( = -321 cm).

Purpose: Selecting vocabulary for preliterate individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication presents multiple challenges, as the number of symbols provided must be balanced with cognitive, motoric, and other needs. Prioritizing certain types of vocabulary thus becomes a necessity. For example, prioritizing core vocabulary-that is, words that are commonly used across a group of people and contexts-is a common practice that attempts to address some of these issues.

A lanthanide-rich kilonova in the aftermath of a long gamma-ray burst.

Nature

February 2024

Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC), Granada, Spain.

Observationally, kilonovae are astrophysical transients powered by the radioactive decay of nuclei heavier than iron, thought to be synthesized in the merger of two compact objects. Over the first few days, the kilonova evolution is dominated by a large number of radioactive isotopes contributing to the heating rate. On timescales of weeks to months, its behaviour is predicted to differ depending on the ejecta composition and the merger remnant.

Contextual memory engrams, and the neuromodulatory influence of the locus coeruleus.

Front Mol Neurosci

February 2024

Systems Neuroscience and Behavior Lab, Department of Psychology, The University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM, United States.

Here, we review the basis of contextual memory at a conceptual and cellular level. We begin with an overview of the philosophical foundations of traversing space, followed by theories covering the material bases of contextual representations in the hippocampus (engrams), exploring functional characteristics of the cells and subfields within. Next, we explore various methodological approaches for investigating contextual memory engrams, emphasizing plasticity mechanisms.

While it is commonly assumed that farmers have higher, and foragers lower, fertility compared to populations practicing other forms of subsistence, robust supportive evidence is lacking. We tested whether subsistence activities-incorporating market integration-are associated with fertility in 10,250 women from 27 small-scale societies and found considerable variation in fertility. This variation did not align with group-level subsistence typologies.

The discovery of long-range magnetic ordering in atomically thin materials catapulted the van der Waals (vdW) family of compounds into an unprecedented popularity, leading to potentially important technological applications in magnetic storage and magneto-transport devices, as well as photoelectric sensors. With the potential for the use of vdW materials in space exploration technologies it is critical to understand how the properties of such materials are affected by ionizing proton irradiation. Owing to their robust intra-layer stability and sensitivity to external perturbations, these materials also provide excellent opportunities for studying proton irradiation as a non-destructive tool for controlling their magnetic properties.
