Chromosome instability, a hallmark of lung cancer, is a driving mechanism for hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] carcinogenesis in humans. Cr(VI) induces structural and numerical chromosome instability in human lung cells by inducing DNA double-strand breaks and inhibiting homologous recombination repair and causing spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) bypass and centrosome amplification. Great whales are long-lived species with long-term exposures to Cr(VI) and accumulate Cr in their tissue, but exhibit a low incidence of cancer.

Photoinduced Magnetic Exchange-Jump Promotes Ground State Biradical Electron Spin Polarization.

Photoinduced electron spin polarization (ESP) is reported in the electronic ground states of three Pt(II) complexes comprised of two S = 1/2 nitronyl nitroxide (NN) radicals attached through different length -phenylethynyl bridges to the 3,6 positions of a catecholate (CAT, donor) and 4,4'-di--butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, acceptor). Complexes - have from 17 to 41 bonds separating NN radicals and display cw-EPR spectra consistent with || ≫ ||, || ≥ ||, and || < ||, respectively, where is the magnetic exchange coupling between NN radicals in the electronic ground state, and is the isotropic N hyperfine coupling constant. Light-induced transient EPR spectra characterized as enhanced ground-state absorption were observed for all three complexes using 532 nm pulsed laser excitation into the ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LL'CT) band of the (CAT)Pt(bpy) chromophore.

For example, prioritizing core vocabulary-that is, words that are commonly used across a group of people and contexts-is a common practice that attempts to address some of these issues.

We examined hypothetical receptiveness to substance-specific interventions among students who reported co-use. This study used publicly available data to examine the association between school characteristics and surrounding neighborhood environment on educational outcomes across three academic years among 132 schools in Passaic County, New Jersey.

Objective: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine neoplasm that predominantly affects elderly and immunocompromised patients. Merkel cell polyoma virus (MCPyV) is clonally integrated into the majority of MCCs and has been linked to patient outcomes, playing a central role in the pathogenesis of the disease. We tested whether subsistence activities-incorporating market integration-are associated with fertility in 10,250 women from 27 small-scale societies and found considerable variation in fertility. This variation did not align with group-level subsistence typologies.

The discovery of long-range magnetic ordering in atomically thin materials catapulted the van der Waals (vdW) family of compounds into an unprecedented popularity, leading to potentially important technological applications in magnetic storage and magneto-transport devices, as well as photoelectric sensors. With the potential for the use of vdW materials in space exploration technologies it is critical to understand how the properties of such materials are affected by ionizing proton irradiation. Owing to their robust intra-layer stability and sensitivity to external perturbations, these materials also provide excellent opportunities for studying proton irradiation as a non-destructive tool for controlling their magnetic properties.

Individualized spectral filters alleviate persistent photophobia, headaches and migraines in active duty military and Veterans following brain trauma.

Purpose: Consistent with association between photophobia and headache, growing evidence suggests an underlying causal relationship between light sensitivity and central pain. We investigated whether an intervention to regulate light sensitivity by filtering only wavelengths causing difficulties for the specific individual could alleviate headaches/migraines resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Methods: Secondary data analysis of a clinical database including  = 392 military personnel (97% men, 3% women), ranging in age from 20 to 51 years, diagnosed with TBI, persistent headaches/migraines, and light sensitivity.
