Primary healthcare (PHC) is a keystone component of population health. However, inequities in public transportation access hinder equitable usage of PHC services by minoritized populations. Using the multimodal enhanced 2-step floating catchment area method and data in 2018 and 2019 for spatial access to PHC providers (n = 1166) and social vulnerability markers through census block (n = 543) and tract data (n = 226), a generalized linear mixed-effect model (GLMEM) was constructed to test the effects of sociodemographic and community area correlates on both car and bus transit spatial access to PHC in the Albuquerque, New Mexico (NM) metropolitan area.

This study deploys a choice experiment method to estimate the preference and willingness to pay for a better solid waste management system in Siddharthanagar municipality in Nepal. A primary survey of 611 households was conducted, and the results from the Generalized Multinomial Logit Model (GMNL) indicate a public preference for a better waste management service. Significant heterogeneity in household preferences is evident after accommodating each choice selection's preference certainty in the GMNL model.

Background: Atherosclerosis is an arterial vessel wall disease characterized by slow, progressive lipid accumulation, smooth muscle disorganization, and inflammatory infiltration. Atherosclerosis often remains subclinical until extensive inflammatory injury promotes vulnerability of the atherosclerotic plaque to rupture with luminal thrombosis, which can cause the acute event of myocardial infarction or stroke. Current bioimaging techniques are unable to capture the pathognomonic distribution of cellular elements of the plaque and thus cannot accurately define its structural disorganization.

Despite increased female representation in medical training, women physicians continue to be under-represented in academic cardiology, particularly in senior roles of authorship and leadership. We analyzed the top 20 most-cited cardiology journals (31,540 total articles) between January 1, 2018 and October 31, 2021 for gender distribution of editorial staff and authorship. Our data demonstrated that only 27% of articles had women as first authors and 20% as senior authors.

The nematode is an emerging human pathogen. Though its life cycle is not well studied, it likely infects humans after a bite from a black fly vector, which in turn acquires infective microfilariae from an infected canid. These microfilariae mature into an infective larval stage within the fly.

Unlabelled: The preoperative diagnosis of pelvic masses has been elusive to date. Methods for characterization such as CA-125 have had limited specificity. We hypothesize that genomic variation can be used to create prediction models which accurately distinguish high grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) from benign tissue.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) can facilitate essential communication among cells in a range of pathophysiological conditions including cancer metastasis and progression, immune regulation, and neuronal communication. EVs are membrane-enclosed vesicles generated through endocytic origin and contain many cellular components, including proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and metabolites. Over the past few years, the intravesicular content of EVs has proven to be a valuable biomarker for disease diagnostics, involving cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and central nervous system diseases.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a well-known gaseous mediator that maintains vascular homeostasis. Extensive evidence supports that a hallmark of endothelial dysfunction, which leads to cardiovascular diseases, is endothelial NO deficiency. Thus, restoring endothelial NO represents a promising approach to treating cardiovascular complications.

We postulate that nanoparticles (NPs) for use in therapeutic applications have largely not realized their clinical potential due to an overall inability to use results to predict NP performance . The avian embryo and associated chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) has emerged as an preclinical model that bridges the gap between and , enabling rapid screening of NP behavior under physiologically relevant conditions and providing a rapid, accessible, economical, and more ethical means of qualifying nanoparticles for use. The CAM is highly vascularized and mimics the diverging/converging vasculature of the liver, spleen, and lungs that serve as nanoparticle traps.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a common untreatable cause of lobar hemorrhages and cognitive decline in the older population. Subset of patients present with its inflammatory subtype with rapid decline in cognitive functions and neurological deficits. Most commonly the underlying pathophysiology of this disease is deposition of insoluble amyloid protein into blood vessel walls which results in vessel fragility leading to local neurotoxicity which may eventually leads to lobar hemorrhages and cognitive decline.

Objective: During March 2020 in the United States, demand for sedatives increased by 91%, that for analgesics rose by 79%, and demand for neuromuscular blockers increased by 105%, all owing to the number of COVID-19 cases requiring invasive mechanical ventilation (MV). We hypothesize that analgesic and sedative requirements decrease following tracheotomy in this patient population.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we conducted a retrospective chart review to identify patients with COVID-19 who underwent tracheotomy (T) at an academic medical center between March 2020 and January 2021.

Melanoma brain metastasis (MBM) is linked to poor prognosis and low overall survival. We hypothesized that melanoma circulating tumor cells (CTCs) possess a gene signature significantly expressed and associated with MBM. Employing a multi-pronged approach, we provide first-time evidence identifying a common CTC gene signature for ribosomal protein large/small subunits (RPL/RPS) which associate with MBM onset and progression.

We have prepared a series of complexes of the type [Ir(ppy)(L] complexes (), where ppy is a substituted 2-phenylpyridine and L is a chelating phosphine thioether ligand. The parent complex () comprises an unsubstituted phenylpyridine ligand, whereas complex contains a nitro substituent on the pyridine ring, complex features a diphenylamine group on the phenyl ring, and has both nitro and diphenylamine groups. Crystallographic, H NMR, and elemental analysis data are consistent with each of the chemical formulae.

Linking clinical services to community-based resources is a promising strategy for assisting patients with chronic disease prevention and management. However, there remains a gap in understanding how to effectively develop and implement community-clinical linkages (CCLs), especially in communities of color. The Healthy Here initiative used Stage Theory of organizational change to implement a centralized wellness referral system, linking primary care clinics to community organizations in majority Hispanic/Latinx and Native American communities.

Transient electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to probe photoinduced electron spin polarization of a stable exchange-coupled organic biradical in a Pt(II) complex comprising 4,4'-di--butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 3,6-bis(ethynyl--phenyl-nitronyl nitroxide)--catecholate (CAT(-C≡C-Ph-NN)). Photoexcitation results in four unpaired spins in excited states of this complex, with spins being localized on each of the two radicals, CAT and bpy. The four spins are all exchange-coupled in these excited states, and an off-diagonal matrix element in the CAT-NN exchange allows for exchange-enhanced intersystem crossing to the T state, which possesses (bpy)Pt(CAT) chromophoric triplet character.

Lewy body diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, vary in their clinical phenotype but exhibit the same defining pathological feature, α-synuclein aggregation. Microbiome-gut-brain dysfunction may play a role in the initiation or progression of disease processes, though there are multiple potential mechanisms. We discuss the need to evaluate gastrointestinal mechanisms of pathogenesis across Lewy body diseases, as disease mechanisms likely span across diagnostic categories and a 'body first' clinical syndrome may better account for the heterogeneity of clinical presentations across the disorders.
