The geometrical control of micronetwork structures ( NSs) formed by endothelial cells is an important topic in tissue engineering, cell-based assays, and fundamental biological studies. In this study, NSs are formed using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) by the coculture of HUVECs and human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) confined in a honeycomb-patterned poly-l-lactic acid film (honeycomb film (HCF)), which is a novel cell culture scaffold. The HCF is produced using the breath figure method, which uses condensed water droplets as pore templates.

ZEHs (Zero Energy House) featuring energy-efficient designs and on-site renewable integration are being widely developed. This study introduced Japanese ZEHs with well-insulated thermal envelopes and investigated their detailed operational performances through on-site measurements and simulation models. Measurement data show that ZEHs effectively damped the variation of indoor air temperature compared to conventional houses, presenting great ability to retain inside heat energy, and are expected to potentially deliver energy flexibility as a virtual thermal energy storage medium.

Respirable organic chemicals were originally thought to cause allergic respiratory diseases, such as bronchial asthma and hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and believed not to cause lung disorders derived from inflammatory or fibrotic processes such as pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial pneumonitis. It has recently been reported, however, that exposure to organic chemicals can cause interstitial lung diseases. In this review, we discuss the clinical features of occupational asthma and hypersensitivity pneumonitis, as well as other lung disorders, including interstitial pneumonitis, caused by humidifier disinfectants in Korea and by a cross-linked acrylic acid-based polymer (CL-PAA) in Japan.

Vietnam is a Southeast Asian developing country with rapidly increasing air pollution, especially in large cities. Over 350,000 chemicals and chemical mixtures are produced and used in Vietnam; however, the country has only implemented air quality standards for 44 substances, which are primarily focused on inorganic and volatile organic compounds. Although numerous pesticides are frequently applied across large cities in Vietnam, information on their concentrations in atmospheric particulate matter (APM) is limited.

In China, research on winter heating and energy saving for residential buildings mainly focuses on urban residences rather than rural ones. According to the 2018 China Building Energy Consumption Research Report, rural residential buildings emit about 423 million tons of carbon, accounting for 21% of the country's total carbon emissions. According to the research on China's greenhouse gas inventory, the main sources of carbon emissions in rural areas are from cooking and the burning of fuelwood and biomass for heating in winter.

This study investigated the occurrence, distribution of several additive brominated flame retardants (BFRs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and some novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in urban indoor dust collected from ten inner districts of Hanoi, Vietnam to assess the contamination status, emission sources, as well as their associated human exposure through indoor dust ingestion and health risks. Total concentrations of PBDEs and NBFRs in indoor dust samples ranged from 43 to 480 ng g (median 170 ng g) and from 56 to 2200 ng g (median 180 ng g), respectively. The most abundant PBDE congener in these dust samples was BDE-209 with concentrations ranging from 29 to 360 ng g, accounting for 62.

Synthesis of lipid-protein conjugates is one of the significant techniques in drug delivery systems of proteins; however, the intact conjugation of a lipid and protein is yet challenging due to the hydrophobicity of lipid molecules. In order to facilitate easy handling of the lipid moiety in conjugation, we have focused on a microbial transglutaminase (MTG) that can ligate specific lysine (K) and glutamine (Q) residues in lipopeptides and a protein of interest. As MTG substrates, monolipid- and dilipid-fused amphiphilic short lipopeptide substrates (lipid-GS-RHK or lipid-KGS-RHK) were designed.

Associating behavior of star-like amphiphilic polymers consisting of two or three poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chains and one stearyl chain (C18) was investigated. Although the aggregation number () of linear analogue of amphiphilic polymers monotonically decreased with increasing number-average molecular weight of PEO (), the of micelles of star-like amphiphilic polymers with = 550 g/mol was smaller than that with = 750 g/mol, whereas that with ≥ 750 g/mol showed general dependence. Small-angle X-ray scattering analyses revealed that the occupied area of one PEO chain on the interface between hydrophobic core and corona layer in the micelles of star-like polymers was much narrower than that in the linear amphiphilic polymers.

We synthesized unique water-soluble synthetic-polymer, styrene-maleic acid copolymer (SMA) conjugated glucosamine (SG); which formed a stable complex with boric acid (BA). This complex had a mean particle size of 15 nm by light scattering, and single peak in gel permeation chromatography. The lectin Dectin-1 is a good target for β-glucan-mediated drug delivery. Although many murine studies of Dectin-1 have been performed, its human analog has not been studied well in terms of being a drug delivery target. We thus analyzed human Dectin-1 cDNA obtained from chronic myelogenous leukemia-derived cells, CML-1, and confirmed the findings of previous studies that there are many isoforms of human Dectin-1 due to exon skipping, although murine Dectin-1 has only two forms.

Adsorptive separation of Pb(II) from aqueous solution containing Pb(II) and other heavy metals (Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II)) has been investigated, using three adsorbents, such as an iminodiacetic acid-chelating resin (CR11) and Fe-based adsorbents (goethite and magnetite). Batchwise adsorption of Pb(II) and other metal ions in single metal system and multi-components system was carried out with varying parameters, such as pH, time and initial concentrations of metals. CR11 possesses the highest adsorption ability for these metals, while the selectivity of individual metal is little.

The results of a survey of radiation workers suggest that they are worried about the effects of radiation exposure on health, and approximately 30% of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) workers have anxiety. This questionnaire survey reveals that the higher the frequency of radiation education, the higher the knowledge of radiation the workers will have, and that the higher the level of knowledge, the lower the anxiety. To reduce anxiety, it is important to increase knowledge about radiation through radiation education.
