Simplified biplanar classification for heterotopic ossification is more predictive of patient-reported outcomes than the Brooker classification after anterior total hip arthroplasty.

Background: Heterotopic ossification (HO) commonly occurs after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and can adversely impact clinical outcomes. The purpose of this study is to propose a more reliable HO grading method that is better predictive of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) after THA than the Brooker classification.

Methods: 513 THAs (62 ± 10 years old) were reviewed.

Cardiac morphology in lung volume reduction surgery for endstage emphysema.

Lung volume reduction surgery for endstage emphysema produces significant improvements in various pulmonary parameters, but its effects on cardiac morphology and function have not been clearly defined. Ten patients scheduled for lung volume reduction surgery underwent pulmonary function testing, right-heart catheterization, and electron beam computed tomography of the heart. These studies were repeated 12-16 weeks after the procedure.

Predictors of visual acuity and the relative afferent pupillary defect in optic neuropathy.

The relationships among visual acuity (log MAR), diagnostic category, age, the magnitude of a relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) in log units, photopic foveal thresholds to white and colored light (dB), and the mean deviation on the Humphrey visual field (dB) were studied in patients with various optic neuropathies. All acuity and dB values were expressed as interocular differences, the majority of cases having normal acuity in the fellow eye. In multiple regression analyses, acuity and RAPD were alternately chosen as the dependent or response variable with all remaining variables serving as the predictors or independent variables.

A comparison of intravascular pressure monitoring system contamination and patient bacteremia with use of 48- and 72-hour system change intervals.

Objective: To determine the incidence of culture positivity in intravascular monitoring systems by comparing 48- versus 72-hour intervals for flush solution, stopcocks, and catheters on removal.

Design: Prospective, quasi-experimental, random assignment.

Setting: Intensive care units of a midwestern university medical center and a community hospital.
