() is an aero-tolerant, gram-positive, endospore-forming, and non-exotoxin-producing bacillus that has colonized the gastrointestinal tract of animals and humans. It is considered a rare pathogen of humans, possibly because of its low virulence. Most infections in the reviewed literatures were predominately reported among neutropenic hosts with hematological malignancies.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful and debilitating disease. A striking feature of OA is the dramatic increase in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels and in new blood vessel formation in the joints, both of which correlate with the severity of OA pain. Our aim was to determine whether anti-VEGF monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) - MF-1 (mAb to VEGFR1) and DC101 (mAb to VEGFR2) - can reduce OA pain and can do so by targeting VEGF signaling pathways such as Flt-1 (VEGFR1) and Flk-1 (VEGFR2).

Cathepsin B: A sellsword of cancer progression.

Cancer Lett

May 2019

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), Chicago, IL, USA; Northwestren University, Chicago, IL, 60611, USA. Electronic address:

Clinical, biochemical and molecular biology studies have identified lysosome-encapsulated cellular proteases as critical risk factors for cancer progression. Cathepsins represent a group of such proteases aimed at maintenance of cellular homeostasis. Nevertheless, recent reports suggest that Cathepsin B executes other cellular programs such as controlling tumor growth, migration, invasion, angiogenesis, and metastases development.

: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects as many as 16 million Americans and is expected to be the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2020. To increase awareness of COPD, encourage related research, and improve care of patients with this chronic disease, the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) was launched in 1998 and published an evidence-based report on COPD prevention and management strategies in 2001 that has been revised regularly. The fourth major revision, which was published in 2017 and revised in 2018, includes significant changes related to COPD classification, as well as to pharmacologic, nonpharmacologic, and comorbidity management.

Discogenic low back pain (DLBP) is extremely common and costly. Effective treatments are lacking due to DLBP's unknown pathogenesis. Currently, there are no in vivo mouse models of DLBP, which restricts research in this field.

Health disparities research has focused primarily on racial and socioeconomic differences in health outcomes. Although neighborhood characteristics and the concept of built environment have been shown to affect individual health, measuring the effects of environmental risks on health has been a less developed area of disparities research. To examine spatial associations and the distribution of geographic patterns of sociodemographic characteristics, environmental cancer risk, and cancer rates, we utilized existing data from multiple sources.

Objective: To quantify the impact of activities of daily living (ADL) scores on the risk of nursing home placement (NHP) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients.

Setting: Models predicting NHP for AD patients have depended on cognitive deterioration as the primary measure. However, there is increased recognition that both patient functioning and cognition are predictive of disease progression.

The pathophysiology of pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) impacts both affective and cognitive brain systems. Understanding disturbances in the neural circuits subserving these abilities is critical for characterizing developmental aberrations associated with the disorder and developing improved treatments. Our objective is to use functional neuroimaging with pediatric bipolar disorder patients employing a task that probes the functional integrity of attentional control and affect processing.
