Carotid artery atherosclerotic stenosis is an important annual cause of stroke in the United States. Moreover, the incidence of carotid artery stenosis is significantly increasing due to the widespread popularity of high fat and high salt diets, sedentary lifestyles, and the increasing age of the population. Of major importance to cardiovascular specialists is the fact that individuals with atherosclerotic carotid artery stenosis can have a prevalence of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease as high as 50 to 75%.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has led to significant advances in the treatment of blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and now shows promise for solid tumors. This type of immunotherapy can achieve high response rates in patients with hematologic malignancies, but carries serious adverse reactions, including cytokine release syndrome and immune-effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome. This article describes CAR T-cell therapy, guidance for primary care providers caring for patients undergoing therapy, and the ongoing need for research to enhance CAR T-cell therapy's safety and effectiveness.

Background: Endoscopic bariatric interventions are viable alternatives to traditional weight loss surgeries for patients with a body mass index between 30 and 40 kg/m. While studies have explored the impact of intragastric balloons on obesity and weight reduction, comprehensive data on real-world device-related complications and failures are limited. This study aimed to investigate mechanical failures leading to patient adverse events reported to the US Food and Drug Administration.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has emerged as a public health threat as it affects approximately 38% of the adult population worldwide, with its prevalence rising in step with that of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Beyond the implications of MASLD for liver health, it is also associated with cardiovascular and vascular dysfunction. Although the many shared risk factors and common metabolic milieu might indicate that cardiovascular disease and MASLD are discrete outcomes from common systemic pathogeneses, a growing body of evidence has identified a potential causal relationship between MASLD and coronary artery disease, which is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with MASLD and all-cause mortality worldwide.

Histone methyltransferase NSD2 (MMSET) overexpression in multiple myeloma (MM) patients plays an important role in the development of this disease subtype. Through the expansion of transcriptional activating H3K36me2 and the suppression of repressive H3K27me3 marks, NSD2 activates an aberrant set of genes that contribute to myeloma growth, adhesive and invasive activities. NSD2 transcriptional activity also depends on its non-catalytic domains, which facilitate its recruitment to chromatin through histone binding.

Exploring Veterinary Students' Perceptions of Teamwork and Learning from an Interprofessional Community-based Experience.

J Vet Med Educ

August 2024

University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine, 2015 S.W. 16th Avenue, Post Office Box 100116, Gainesville, FL 32610, USA.

The COVID-19 pandemic provided insight into the gaps provided by health care systems that could benefit from collaborative practice across the nexus of the animal and human health professions. The platform of Interprofessional Education (IPE), recognized as a pedagogical platform for delivering the principles of One Health, embodies the benefits of collaboration to address critical emerging public health issues, including the emergence of vector-borne zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance, food security and defense and the impacts of climatic change. A phenomenological methodology, which is used to understand individuals lived experience, elicited veterinary students' perceptions of the benefits of interprofessional learning.

Converging lines of preclinical and clinical research indicate that females, in stark contrast to males, display an increased prevalence of chronic pain. Females also demonstrate weaker analgesic efficacy in response to opioid therapies when compared with males. These sex-specific differences may be driven by dimorphic endogenous opioidergic responses.

Introduction: For retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS), aggressive surgical resection offers the only chance for a cure; however, 5-year survival remains below 65%. Therefore, there is a critical need to identify drivers of poor clinical outcomes.

Materials And Methods: To identify biomarkers of tumors likely to recur following curative intent resection, we performed genomic and transcriptomic sequencing for 47 and 34 patients, respectively, with non-metastatic RPS at a single, high-volume sarcoma center.
