Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists are medications used to treat type 2 diabetes and may aid in weight loss efforts. The surgical management of patients taking GLP-1 agonists differs from others due to the slowed gastric emptying effects of GLP-1 medications. Patients taking these medications may have a higher risk of pulmonary aspiration during hand surgery than other patients, which affects their presurgical management.

Factors Associated With Increased Sex Diversity in Orthopaedic Trauma Association-Accredited Fellowship Training.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

December 2024

From the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC (Silvestre), the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix, Phoenix, AZ (Kermanshahi and Dehghan), the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, MI (Ahn), and the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA (Harris).

Introduction: This study quantifies the state of sex diversity in orthopaedic trauma training and analyzes fellowship program characteristics associated with greater sex diversity among trainees. We hypothesized that greater sex diversity among orthopaedic trauma fellows would be associated with the presence of female faculty.

Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study of orthopaedic trauma faculty (2023 to 2024) and fellows (2009 to 2024).

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are recommended to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). The landmark studies leading to the current guideline recommendations preceded the 4 pillars of guideline-directed medical therapies (GDMTs). Therefore, some have questioned the role of ICDs for primary prevention in current clinical practice.

The widespread presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment, driven by extensive industrial use, has raised global concerns due to their persistence and adverse health effects. Despite the increased regulatory focus on a sub-set of well-known PFAS, over 12,000 compounds exist, many poorly characterized. Our study assessed hidden PFAS concentrations, undetectable by standard LC-MS/MS analysis, in contaminated groundwater.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic condition with a multifaceted pathoetiology requiring a multimodal management approach. The HS evaluation process involves the use of multiple tools to determine the extent and activity of disease, patient-reported outcomes, and the effectiveness of therapy. The multimodal approach to treatment based on severity includes lifestyle modifications, topical medications, systemic antibiotics, immunomodulators, and surgical interventions.

Sensors are important for a wide variety of applications include medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. Due to their long photon confinement times, whispering gallery mode (WGM) sensors are among the most sensitive sensors currently in existence. We briefly discuss what are WGM sensors, the principles of WGM sensing, and the history of the field, beginning with Mie theory.

Evidence shows that gorgonians are more resistant to ocean acidification and rising temperatures than hard corals and are vital to reef health and the reestablishment of disrupted coral reef communities. Gorgonian coral's resilience and its diversity of morphology and environment make it well-suited as a model organism for bioinspired design applied to particle capture. We focus on flow near the polyps, using an updated form of the immersed boundary method to model the fluid-structure interaction of the flexible polyps and the surrounding ocean water.

European Respiratory Society Research Seminar on Preventing Pediatric Asthma.

Pediatr Pulmonol

December 2024

Institute of Asthma and Allergy Prevention, Helmholtz Zentrum München, German Research Center for Environmental Health, Neuherberg, Germany.

This report is a summary of the presentations given at the European Respiratory Society's Research Seminar on Asthma Prevention. The seminar reviewed both epidemiological and mechanistic studies and concluded that; (i) reducing exposure of pregnant women and children to air pollution will reduce incident asthma, (ii) there are promising data that both fish oil and a component of raw cow's milk prevent asthma, and (iii) modulating trained immunity by either mimicking helminth infection or oral and sublingual bacterial products is a promising area of research.

Integrating artificial intelligence with smartphone-based imaging for cancer detection in vivo.

Biosens Bioelectron

November 2024

Wyant College of Optical Sciences, The University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, 85721, USA. Electronic address:

Cancer is a major global health challenge, accounting for nearly one in six deaths worldwide. Early diagnosis significantly improves survival rates and patient outcomes, yet in resource-limited settings, the scarcity of medical resources often leads to late-stage diagnosis. Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with smartphone-based imaging systems offers a promising solution by providing portable, cost-effective, and widely accessible tools for early cancer detection.

Randomized in error in pragmatic clinical trials.

Contemp Clin Trials

November 2024

Department of Biostatistics, Yale School of Public Health, New Haven, CT, USA; Center for Methods in Implementation and Prevention Science, Yale School of Public Health, New Haven, CT, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Pragmatic trials that combine electronic health record data and patient-reported data may be subject to selection bias due to the differential post-randomization exclusion of participants who are randomized in error. Such situations are often caused by inevitable reasons, such as incomplete patient medical records at the pre-randomization stage. This can lead to participants in the intervention arm being identified as ineligible after randomization, while randomized-in-error participants in the usual care are often not discernable.

Assessment of the link between life purpose and health.

J Public Health (Oxf)

November 2024

Department of Finance and Real Estate, College of Business, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523, USA.

Background: This study examined the temporal relations between a decline in health and changes in life purpose to better understand the causal direction between life purpose and morbidity.

Methods: Over a 16-year period, 7598 individuals completed up to four quadrennial surveys, which included information on 14 health metrics (lung function, grip strength, walking speed, balance and diagnoses of hypertension, diabetes, cancer, lung disease, heart condition, stroke, psychiatric problem, arthritis, dementia and Alzheimer's) and life purpose. Ordinary and logistic regressions were used to examine the temporal relations between changes in purpose and changes in health over both the same 4-year period and over the subsequent 8 years.

  • BMS-202 is a small molecule with antitumor properties, and this study investigates its physical and chemical characteristics for potential use in topical applications, focusing on uniformity, stability, and safety.
  • Various analytical methods such as SEM, DSC, HSM, Raman, and FTIR were used to analyze BMS-202, revealing its unique morphology, thermal behavior, and chemical consistency, while also measuring moisture content and uptake under different humidity levels.
  • Safety tests on skin cell lines indicated that while high concentrations of BMS-202 are cytotoxic, lower doses are safe and do not compromise skin barrier integrity.

Due to historical and ongoing structural racism and settler colonialism, Indigenous Peoples and communities in the United States are at a higher risk for a variety of diseases, elevated stress, and negative mental health outcomes. In addition, the United States federal government and the public encourage a view that Indigenous Peoples are primarily a racial group. Federally-, state-, and un-recognized Indigenous Peoples have a collective right to self-determination and sovereignty, and individuals of these Peoples understand this.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate how the serine protease KLK6 affects colorectal cancer development in mice with a mutant tumor suppressor gene, finding that KLK6 expression increases significantly in tumors compared to normal tissue.
  • - Techniques like immunohistochemistry confirmed KLK6 presence, and genetically altered mice lacking KLK6 showed smaller tumor sizes and fewer adenomas, indicating KLK6's crucial role in tumor growth.
  • - The research highlights KLK6 as an important factor for intestinal tumorigenesis, suggesting it could be useful for early diagnosis of colorectal cancer.
