Background And Aims: Adequate dietary intakes of essential micronutrients are critical to prevent insulin resistance (IR)-related diseases. Even though the excess calorie intake linked with obesity is also associated with such diseases, no previous studies evaluated the importance of meeting the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of micronutrients in relation to calorie intake in those at risk for developing IR.

Methods And Results: We evaluated the relationship between the ability or failure to meet the DRI of micronutrients in relation to daily calorie intake in 463 childbearing-age women with a higher prevalence of IR.

The dual-hub account posits that the neural organization of semantic knowledge is segregated by the type of semantic relation with anterior temporal lobe (ATL) specializing for taxonomic relations and inferior parietal lobule (IPL) for thematic relations. This study critically examined this account by recording intracranial EEG from an array of depth electrodes within ATL, IPL, and two regions within the semantic control network, inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and posterior middle temporal gyrus (pMTG), while 17 participants with refractory epilepsy completed a semantic relatedness judgment task. We observed a significant difference between relation types in ATL and IPL approximately 600-800 ms after trial presentation, and no significant differences in IFG or pMTG.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study used next-generation sequencing (NGS) to determine the prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infections in HIV+ women, focusing on the percentage of viral reads rather than just positive or negative diagnoses.
  • - Findings revealed that women showing greater percentages of HR-HPV were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with cervical abnormalities, with key risk factors being lower CD4 counts.
  • - The authors argue that NGS methods could improve HPV screening and management in HIV+ women, while highlighting concerns about the limitations of traditional HPV testing and vaccine effectiveness in preventing cervical cancer.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype testing has limited utility to identify human immunodeficiency virus-infected (HIV+) women's risk for developing cervical cancer (CC) due to high positivity rate of high-risk (HR) HPVs. We investigated the accuracy of HPV testing in isolation/in combination with CD4 and HIV viral load (VL) to identify HIV+ women at risk for developing CC.

Methods: Study consisted of 344 HIV+ women on combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), tested for cervical cytology/HPV using the Cobas test and had data on absolute CD4 count and VL measurements.

A tightly regulated protein quality control (PQC) system maintains a healthy balance between correctly folded and misfolded protein species. This PQC system work with the help of a complex network comprised of molecular chaperones and proteostasis. Any intruder, especially environmental pollutants, disrupt the PQC network and lead to PQCs disruption, thus generating damaged and infectious protein.

Background: Intrauterine exposure to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). Ghrelin and GLP-1 have opposite functions in nutritional homeostasis and are associated with insulin secretion, but it is not known if individuals exposed to GDM exhibit dysregulation in these associations.

Objective: Test the hypothesis that children exposed to GDM in utero will exhibit dysregulation among ghrelin, GLP-1, and C-peptide (reflecting insulin secretion).

Vascular Biology and Hypertension Program, Division of Cardiovascular Disease, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine,, The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), 1720 2nd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL, 35294-0007, USA.

Hypertension is the leading risk factor for death and disability-adjusted life-years lost globally. Despite this tremendous impact on health, blood pressure measurement and treatment are relatively new to medical practice, with widespread measurement beginning just over 100 years ago. How, in such a short time, did blood pressure become such an integral measurement in medical practice that it is now considered one of the vital signs? Key revelations through Stephen Hales and his horse experiment, Riva-Rocci's modern blood pressure cuff, Korotkoff sounds, and President Roosevelt's death set the stage for discovery.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a significant impact on global healthcare services. In an attempt to limit the spread of infection and to preserve healthcare resources, one commonly used strategy has been to postpone elective surgery, whilst maintaining the provision of anaesthetic care for urgent and emergency surgery. General anaesthesia with airway intervention leads to aerosol generation, which increases the risk of COVID-19 contamination in operating rooms and significantly exposes the healthcare teams to COVID-19 infection during both tracheal intubation and extubation.

May 2020

Department of Nutrition Sciences and Nutrition Obesity Research Center, The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Birmingham, AL, USA; Obesity Research Group, Department of Clinical Research and Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway; Centre for Obesity and Innovation (ObeCe), Clinic of Surgery, St Olav University Hospital, Trondheim, Norway. Electronic address:

To reduce the health burden of obesity, it is important to identify safe and practical treatments that are effective for weight loss while concurrently preventing weight regain. Diet-induced weight loss is usually followed by a concomitant increase in ghrelin secretion and feelings of hunger, which may compromise weight loss goals and increase the risk of weight regain. The aim of this review is to describe the status of knowledge regarding the impact of ketosis, induced by diet or exogenous ketones (ketone esters), on appetite and the potential mechanisms involved.

Background: There are no HPV-based measures for managing anal cancer (AC) in HIV-infected (HIV+) men who have sex with men (MSM) because of the high positivity of high-risk (HR)-HPVs. As next-generation sequencing (NGS) is able to describe the composition of HPVs as percent (%) reads rather than positive vs negative results, we used NGS approach to detect HPVs in anal samples of HIV+ MSM to test its ability to differentiate those who are diagnosed with atypical squamous cells of unknown significance or greater (ASCUS+) from those who are free of such lesions and to understand the burden of HPV infections in relation to HPV vaccines.

Methods: Study included 81 HIV+ MSM characterized for demographics, patient-reported outcome measures, HIV related laboratory measures and anal cytology.
