Department of Child and Adolescents Health, School of Public Health, Bengbu Medical College, 2600 East Sea Avenue, Bengbu, 233030, Anhui, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the relationship between hormone levels in the blood of pregnant women and their newborns, focusing on androgens such as testosterone (T), free testosterone (FT), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG).
  • Results showed that male newborns had higher levels of cord blood T, FT, and DHT compared to females, while also noting different levels of hormones between prenatal and cord blood.
  • Various association paths were identified for both male and female neonates, indicating how prenatal hormone levels influenced their cord blood counterparts, highlighting a complex interplay between these hormones.

The Role of SETBP1 in Gastric Cancer: Friend or Foe.

Front Oncol

July 2022

Key Laboratory of Environmental Medical Engineering and Education Ministry, School of Public Health, Southeast University, Nanjing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Gastric cancer (GC) is a serious global health issue with poor outcomes, and the role of the gene SETBP1 in GC is not well understood despite its involvement in other cancers as both an oncogene and tumor suppressor.
  • Using RNA sequencing data from The Cancer Genome Atlas, researchers found that SETBP1 expression is significantly lower in GC tissues compared to non-tumor tissues, and varies with tumor differentiation, particularly being higher in diffuse-type GC.
  • Analysis revealed that lower SETBP1 expression correlates with poor differentiation and survival outcomes in GC patients, suggesting the need for further studies on its potential as a clinical marker or therapeutic target.

The crucial effect of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-induced vascular angiogenesis has been well known in corneal neovascularization (CNV). This research aimed to determine the underlying value and mechanism of Meg3 on CNV in vivo and in vitro. In an alkali-burned mouse model, length and area of new vessels were increased along with thinning of corneal epithelium, accompanied by the overexpression of Meg3.

MicroRNA-146a promotes proliferation, migration, and invasion of HepG2 via regulating FLAP.

Institute of Clinical Pharmacology, Key Laboratory of Anti-Inflammatory and Immune Medicine, Ministry of Education, Anhui Collaborative Innovation Center of Anti-Inflammatory and Immune Medicine, Anhui Anti-Inflammatory and Immune Medicine Innovation Team, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, 230032, China.

Abnormal expression of 5-Lipoxygenase Activating Protein (FLAP) has been detected in many tumor cells. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) negatively regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding to the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of the target mRNA sequences and have been shown to be involved in various types of cancers. Herein, we aimed to demonstrate the expression of miR-146a and FLAP in human HCC tissues and liver cancer cell lines.

December 2022

Key Laboratory of Environmental Medical Engineering and Education Ministry, School of Public Health, Southeast University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

Aims And Background: The tumor microenvironment significantly influences malignant behavior and progression. Many components are involved in the tumor microenvironment, including extracellular matrix, stromal cells, immune and inflammatory cells, as well as cytokines that promote tumor development with complex interactions through the exchange of molecular information. It is now known that tumor immune escape may be influenced by the tumor microenvironment.

  • A study evaluated the levels of soluble TIM-3 (sTIM-3) in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) to assess its potential as a clinical diagnostic marker.
  • The researchers measured sTIM-3 and squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCAg) levels in 199 OSCC patients and 107 healthy individuals using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
  • Results indicated that both sTIM-3 and SCCAg levels were higher in OSCC patients, and using them together provided better diagnostic accuracy than using each marker alone; sTIM-3 also correlated positively with various clinical factors.

Electronic address:

Our previous studies have implicated Caspase-1 signaling in driving the proinflammatory state of acute graft versus host disease (aGVHD). Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the mechanism of Caspase-1 in in murine models of aGVHD through specific inhibition of its activity with the decoy peptide Ac-YVAD-CMK. We transplanted bone marrow from donor C57BL/6 (H-2b) mice into recipient BALB/c (H-2Kd) mice and randomized the recipients into the following treatment cohorts: (1) allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and splenic cell infusion control (PBS group); (2) low dose Ac-YVAD-CMK (AC low group); (3) and high dose Ac-YVAD-CMK (AC high group).

Changes in serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) level, S100β protein concentration and inflammatory factor levels and their correlations with cognitive impairment Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores in intracranial tumor patients with cognitive impairment were explored. Seventy patients diagnosed with intracranial tumor based on clinical symptoms and computed tomography (CT) images were selected and divided into non-cognitive impairment group (MoCA score ≥26 points, n=44) and cognitive impairment group (MoCA score <26 points, n=26) in accordance with the comprehensive cognitive function evaluation scores. Next, the serum NSE level, S100β protein concentration and inflammatory factor levels were detected, and their relationships with MMSE and MoCA scores were analyzed via Pearsons correlation analysis.
