Background: Post-stroke spasticity (PSS) is a common complication after stroke and is an important cause of high rates of disability after stroke. At present, modern medicine has made great progress in the treatment of PSS, 'early detection, early treatment' has become a general consensus for the treatment of PSS in the clinic. Clarifying the risk factors of PSS can help to detect and treat the functional disorders caused by PSS at an earlier stage.

Chronic insomnia has the potential to significantly impact physical well-being, occupational performance, and overall quality of life. This review summarizes the clinical and basic research on the central regulatory mechanism of acupuncture in treating primary insomnia (PI), aiming to explore the clinical effectiveness and possible mechanism of acupuncture in treating PI. The currently available drugs for insomnia exhibit notable adverse effects and tend to induce dependence.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how acupuncture impacts learning/memory impairment and oxidative stress resulting from sleep deprivation in rats, focusing on the underlying mechanisms.
  • - Thirty rats were divided into three groups (normal, sleep deprivation, and acupuncture), subjected to a specific model of sleep deprivation and treated with electroacupuncture at designated points for a week.
  • - Results showed that sleep-deprived rats exhibited worse learning abilities and increased oxidative stress markers, while those receiving acupuncture showed significant improvements in memory and reduced oxidative stress levels.

Institute of Acupuncture and Massage, Northeast Asian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Changchun University of Chinese Medicine, Changchun, Jilin, China.

Objective: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) over time predisposes to inflammatory responses and abnormalities in functional brain networks that damage learning, memory, or executive function. The hippocampus is a key region often reporting connectivity abnormalities in memory disorders. Here, we investigated peripheral inflammatory responses and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) changes characterized of hippocampal subregions in type 2 diabetes-associated cognitive decline (T2DACD).

To investigate the effect mechanism of electroacupuncture based on the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) /acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) signaling pathway to improve glycolipid metabolism disorders in db/db mice. 10 db/m mice with normal genotype were used as the normal control group without diabetes (Con), and 30 db/db mice were divided randomly into three groups: Pathological model mice (Mod), Acupuncture + ACC antagonist group (Acu + ACC), and Acupuncture + AMPK antagonist group (Acu + AMPK). Con and Mod did not receive any special treatment, only as a control observation.

Introduction: To investigate the effects of acupuncture on endogenous metabolites in the liver of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) mice-based metabolomics.

Methods: Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR) metabolomics combined with multivariate statistical analysis and univariate analysis were used to analyze the changes of endogenous metabolites in the liver of mice in each group and to provide new clinical ideas for acupuncture in the treatment of glycolipid metabolism disorders caused by T2DM and NAFLD.

Results: After 4 weeks of continuous treatment, fasting blood glucose (FBG), insulin (INS), total cholesterol (TC), and triglyceride (TG) decreased significantly in mice in the acupuncture treatment group (ATG), and the content of liver glycogen increased significantly.

Worldwide, as the population age, osteoporosis is becoming increasingly common, and osteoporotic fractures have a significant economic burden. Postmenopausal women are the most susceptible to developing osteoporosis and the most critical time to prevent it is during the perimenopausal and early menopausal years. In this regard, we hypothesize rational combination of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the form of herbal extract could prevent osteoporosis in women.

Objective: Observational studies have suggested an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in individuals with ankylosing spondylitis. However, these studies are prone to confounding factors and reverse causality. To address these limitations, we conducted a Mendelian randomization study to assess the causal relationship between AS and CVD.

Background: Previous studies have suggested that antihypertensive drugs may play a role in the treatment of osteoarthritis, but these studies may be limited by confounding factors and lead to biased results. Therefore, we conducted a Mendelian randomization study to investigate the effects of blood pressure and antihypertensive drugs on osteoarthritis.

Methods: We used published large-scale genome-wide association data and applied univariate and multivariate Mendelian randomization methods.

Article Synopsis
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent chronic liver condition linked to an imbalance in gut bacteria, and Zhishi Daozhi Decoction (ZDD) is derived from traditional Chinese medicine with potential liver-protecting benefits.!* -
  • In a study, mice fed a high-fat diet were given ZDD, resulting in reduced body weight, lower liver and blood lipid levels, decreased liver fat accumulation, and improved intestinal flora composition.!* -
  • The findings suggest that ZDD might help treat NAFLD by enhancing gut health and promoting a better environment for intestinal bacteria, along with bolstering the expression of proteins that maintain intestinal structure.!*

Background: In recent years, the incidence of obesity patients has become younger and younger, and adolescents are gradually becoming one of the groups with a high incidence of obesity. Although several systematic reviews and clinical trials suggest that acupuncture and warm compresses may be effective in the treatment of obesity, the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture combined with warm compresses in the treatment of obesity insulin resistance (IR) in adolescents have not been systematically reviewed.

Methods: The search language of this study is Chinese and English, and the data of Medline, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Web of Science, China Biomedical Literature Database, Central Controlled Trial Registration Center, and China Scientific Journal Database were searched for this study respectively, from the date of creation of the above data to December 2022.

Background: Pancreatic cancer (PC) has a high mortality and dismal prognosis, predicting to be the second most lethal malignancy. 5-Methylcytosine (m5C) and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are both crucial in the prognostic outcome and immunotherapeutic effect for PC patients. Therefore, we aimed to create an m5C-related lncRNA signature (m5C-LS) for PC patients' prognosis and treatment.

Methods: Patients with stroke were compared and correlated from overall and three periods (1-3 months, 4-6 months, and >6 months). Fugl-Meyer assessment for the upper extremity (FMA-UE) and action research and arm test (ARAT) were used to compare the UE motor status between patients with PSA and without PSA through a cross-sectional study among 435 patients. Then, the correlations between the evaluation scale scores of UE motor status and language function of patients with PSA were analyzed in various dimensions, and the language subfunction most closely related to UE motor function was analyzed by multiple linear regression analysis.
