June 2024

Department of hematology, Dushu Lake Hospital Affiliated to Soochow University, Suzhou 215028, China National Clinical Medical Research Center of Blood Diseases, The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Jiangsu Institute of Hematology, Suzhou 215007, China Key Laboratory of Thrombosis & Hemostasis of National Health Commission of People's Republic of China, Suzhou 215006, China.

A 28-year-old woman was found to have coagulation factor Ⅷ activity (FⅧ∶C) <1% and von Willebrand factor antigen (VWF∶Ag) <1% during routine prenatal examinations. No pathogenic variation was found in the exon region of the VWF gene using next-generation sequencing. The clinical presentation of this patient does not match the clinical characteristics of type Ⅲ hemophilia [von Willebrand disease (VWD) ]; therefore, third-generation sequencing technology was used to perform whole-genome sequencing on the patient and her family members.

  • Baker's cyst (BC) is a serious complication in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, with study findings showing that 15.3% of RA patients had BC, particularly those with knee-only involvement.
  • The study analyzed 367 patients and used statistical methods to identify risk factors, finding that having knee-only involvement and anemia were significant predictors for developing BC.
  • Local inflammation was linked to both the occurrence and rupture of BC, suggesting that local treatment could be more effective than just relying on systemic therapy for RA patients.

Background And Objectives: Anxiety and depression have implications for ischemic stroke recovery. This study explored the association of genetically predicted anxiety and depression with functional outcome after ischemic stroke using Mendelian randomization (MR) approach.

Methods: Independent genetic variants associated with anxiety and depression at genome-wide significance level ( < 5 × 10) were obtained from large-scale genome-wide association studies (N = 1,306,354).

Background: HHLA2 (human endogenous retrovirus-H long terminal repeat-associating protein 2) represents a recently identified member of the B7 immune checkpoint family, characterized by limited expression in normal tissues but notable overexpression in various cancer types. Nevertheless, the precise function and interaction with immune cells remain poorly understood, particularly in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). This investigation endeavored to elucidate the biological significance of HHLA2 within the tumor microenvironment of human LSCC tissues and delineate the clinical relevance and functional roles of HHLA2 in LSCC pathogenesis.

  • - The study investigated the traits of delaminated rotator cuff tears (RCTs) and assessed the effectiveness of a modified suture bridge repair technique for these types of tears, comparing it with traditional methods for nondelaminated tears.
  • - It retrospectively reviewed 172 patients with full-thickness RCTs who had at least a 2-year follow-up, revealing that delaminated tears were more common in larger tears, and both repair techniques significantly improved patient outcomes.
  • - The results showed similar retear rates and clinical scores between the delaminated and nondelaminated groups post-surgery, indicating that the modified suture bridge technique is just as effective for delaminated RCTs as conventional methods for nond

Background: Bladder cancer is a common malignancy with high invasion and poor clinical outcome. Intratumor heterogeneity (ITH) is linked to cancer progression and metastasis and high ITH can accelerate tumor evolution. Our objective is to develop an ITH-related signature (IRS) for predicting clinical outcome and immunotherapy benefit in bladder cancer.

Effects of salidroside on atherosclerosis: potential contribution of gut microbiota.

Front Pharmacol

July 2024

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, The First People's Hospital of Changzhou, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Changzhou, China.

Much research describes gut microbiota in atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) for that the composition of the intestinal microbiome or its metabolites can directly participate in the development of endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis and its adverse complications. Salidroside, a natural phenylpropane glycoside, exhibits promising biological activity against the progression of ASCVD. Recent studies suggested that the gut microbiota played a crucial role in mediating the diverse beneficial effects of salidroside on health.

Prolonged vs shorter awake prone positioning for COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory failure: a multicenter, randomised controlled trial.

Intensive Care Med

August 2024

Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine, Departments of Medicine, Surgery, and Biomedical Engineering, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.

Purpose: Awake prone positioning has been reported to reduce endotracheal intubation in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF). However, it is still unclear whether using the awake prone positioning for longer periods can further improve outcomes.

Methods: In this randomized, open-label clinical trial conducted at 12 hospitals in China, non-intubated patients with COVID-19-related AHRF were randomly assigned to prolonged awake prone positioning (target > 12 h daily for 7 days) or standard care with a shorter period of awake prone positioning.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a prevalent cardiovascular condition that remains the primary cause of death due to its adverse ventricular remodelling and pathological changes in end-stage heart failure. As a complex pathologic condition, it involves intricate regulatory processes at the cellular and molecular levels. The immune system and cardiovascular system are closely interconnected, with immune cells playing a crucial role in maintaining cardiac health and influencing disease progression.

Recently, ezetimibe (EZM) has been suggested to be a potent Nrf2 activator that is important for preventing oxidative stress. Interestingly, we found that its metabolite ezetimibe ketone (EZM-K) also has antioxidant effects. Thus, we investigated the role of EZM-K in preventing renal ischemia‒reperfusion injury (RIRI).
