The Hygienic Significance of Microbiota and Probiotics for Human Wellbeing.

Probiotics Antimicrob Proteins

December 2024

Center for Agrobiotechnology, Don State Technical University, Gagarina Sq., 1344002, Rostov-On-Don, Russia.

The human body can be viewed as a combination of ecological niches inhabited by trillions of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, all united by the microbiota concept. Human health largely depends on the nature of these relationships and how they are built and maintained. However, personal hygiene practices have historically been focused on the wholesale elimination of pathogens and "hygiene-challenging microorganisms" without considering the collateral damage to beneficial and commensal species.

Electrokinetic Power-Series Solution in Narrow Cylindrical Capillaries for All Zeta Potentials.

Electrophoresis

December 2024

Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Piscataway, New Jersey, USA.

Work from Rice and Whitehead showed the results of electrokinetic flow in a capillary tube under the assumption of low zeta potential 25 mV, limiting the approximation's usability. Further research conducted by Philip and Wooding provided an alternative solution that assumes high zeta potentials 25 mV and relies on Rice and Whitehead's solution for lower ranges. However, this solution is presented as a piecewise function, where the functions change based on the zeta potential and the parameter, introducing infinite values for the zeta potential and discontinuities in the derived functions.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

December 2024

Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology & Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, 610 Taylor Road, Piscataway, New Jersey, 08854, USA.

Developing highly efficient, cost-effective, and robust electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is paramount for the large-scale commercialization of renewable fuel cells and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Herein, a new ternary-atom catalyst that is composed of paired Fe sites and single Ni sites (as Fe-N and Ni-N) coordinated onto hollow nitrogen-doped carbon microspheres is developed. The as-synthesized catalyst exhibits remarkable activities toward both the ORR and OER in alkaline media, with superior performances to those of the control materials that contain only Fe-N or Ni-N sites.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/Fs) are contaminants of concern in the New York/New Jersey Harbor and in the organisms of the Newtown Creek Superfund site, which lies within the harbor. Because PCDD/Fs are never intentionally produced, identifying their sources can be challenging. In this work, sources of PCDD/Fs to the sediment of Newtown Creek were investigated using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) to analyze two data sets containing data on concentrations of (1) PCDD/Fs and (2) PCDD/Fs plus polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Social support, via investment in relationships of importance with others, is often emphasized as a pathway towards mediating stress. The effectiveness of social support, however, can be altered by personality differences, but the physiological consequences of such covariation are still poorly explored. How do individual differences in the functioning of the stress response system mediate access to, and use of, social support? To examine this dynamic, we investigated glucocorticoids as a biomarker of energetic activation that may also be activated by chronic psychosocial stress.

Phosphatidylinositol phosphates (PIPs) are a family of seven different eukaryotic membrane lipids that have a large role in cell viability, despite their minor concentration in eukaryotic cellular membranes. PIPs tightly regulate cellular processes, such as cellular growth, metabolism, immunity, and development through direct interactions with partner proteins. Understanding the biophysical properties of PIPs in the complex membrane environment is important to understand how PIPs selectively regulate a partner protein.
