Background: In modern conflicts, extremities are mainly affected, with limb amputations required for approximately 5% of severely injured combatants and 7% of those with serious limb injuries. Amputations are some of the most challenging injuries endured by survivors, significantly affecting the patients and the healthcare system. This study aims to describe the rates, characteristics, and risk factors of limb amputations in patients with serious extremity trauma during the 2023 conflict in Israel.

In this narrative essay, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioner describes the challenge of treating three survivors of a terror attack, all of whom were presenting various symptoms of acute stress disorder (ASD). Working in new and exceptionally demanding circumstances - with thousands of people injured in an extensive and direct terror attack, with relatives taken hostages and entire communities evacuated from their homes - the practitioner looked for an effective treatment strategy to alleviate symptoms of stress response. He found it in the interface between TCM and the function of the autonomic nervous system.

Objective: The frequency of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) peaks during the third trimester of pregnancy when plasma progesterone levels are the highest. Furthermore, twin pregnancies are characterized by higher progesterone levels than singletons and have a higher frequency of cholestasis. Therefore, we hypothesized that exogenous progestogens administered for reducing the risk of spontaneous preterm birth may increase the risk of cholestasis.

Purpose: Cancer risks conferred by germline, heterozygous, ATM pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants (PSVs) are yet to be consistently determined. The current study assessed these risks by analysis of a large dataset of ATM heterozygote loss of function (LOF) and missense PSV carriers tested with a multigene panel (MGP).
Methods: De-identified data of all individuals who underwent ATM sequencing as part of MGP between October 2015 and February 2020 were reviewed.

Increasing numbers of young Israelis annually leave the enclave of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. Relying on 16 in-depth interviews, we examine the effects of this disaffiliation on life trajectories and identity reconstruction of individuals who left their society of origin two decades ago. This unveiled a multistep longitudinal process, characterized by moving in and out of various structural stages, coupled with disaffiliates' agency to highlight specific sociocultural characteristics or the more universal nature of the human condition.

As the effectiveness of a two-dose messenger RNA (mRNA) severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine regimen decreases with time, a third dose has been recommended. Here, we assessed immunogenicity, vaccine effectiveness and safety of the third BNT162b2 vaccine dose in a prospective cohort study of 12,413 healthcare workers (HCWs). Anti-RBD immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels were increased 1.

Introduction: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by a range of phenotypic expressions. Gender may be a relevant factor in mediating the disorder's heterogeneity. The aim of the present report was to explore a large multisite clinical sample of OCD patients, hypothesizing existing demographic, geographical and clinical differences between male and female patients with OCD.

Vanishing twin syndrome (VTS), defined by first-trimester spontaneous loss of a twin, is a common phenomenon with a reported prevalence of 15-35% of twin pregnancies. The etiology of VTS is obscure. Still, several risk factors have been identified, including an increased number of embryos transferred in pregnancies conceived by in vitro fertilization, an initial increased number of gestational sacs and advanced maternal age.

Background: Dengue virus (DENV) is a frequent travel-related infection, but longitudinal data on its incidence is limited. We aimed to study temporal trends of travel-related DENV burden and its geographical sources.
Methods: All cases of laboratory-confirmed DENV infection diagnosed at the Central Virology Laboratory of the Israeli Ministry of Health during 2008-2019 were evaluated.
Introduction: We compared retinal layers' thickness between apolipoprotein E () Ɛ4 carriers and non-carriers in a cohort of cognitively normal middle-aged adults enriched for Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk.
Methods: Participants (N = 245) underwent spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Multivariate analyses of covariance adjusting for age, sex, education, and best corrected vision acuity was used to compare retinal thickness between groups.

Background: Despite high vaccine coverage and effectiveness, the incidence of symptomatic infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been increasing in Israel. Whether the increasing incidence of infection is due to waning immunity after the receipt of two doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine is unclear.
Methods: We conducted a 6-month longitudinal prospective study involving vaccinated health care workers who were tested monthly for the presence of anti-spike IgG and neutralizing antibodies.
