Article Synopsis
  • Acute-on-chronic liver disease (AoCLD) is a major cause of hospitalization in hepatology, prompting a study to better understand its characteristics for diagnosis and prognosis.
  • A total of 3,375 patients were analyzed, highlighting that liver cirrhosis acute decompensation (LC-AD) is the most common type, with hepatitis B virus (HBV) being the leading cause of chronic liver disease.
  • The study revealed high mortality rates associated with AoCLD subtypes, emphasizing that bacterial infections are significant precipitating factors and that timely medical intervention is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Deep-learning segmentation to select liver parenchyma for categorizing hepatic steatosis on multinational chest CT.

Sci Rep

May 2024

Department of Nephrology, Multidisciplinary Innovation Center for Nephrology, The Second Hospital of Shandong University, Shandong University, Jinan, 250033, Shandong, China.

Unenhanced CT scans exhibit high specificity in detecting moderate-to-severe hepatic steatosis. Even though many CTs are scanned from health screening and various diagnostic contexts, their potential for hepatic steatosis detection has largely remained unexplored. The accuracy of previous methodologies has been limited by the inclusion of non-parenchymal liver regions.

Institute of Medical Sciences, The Second Hospital of Shandong University, Jinan 250033, PR China. Electronic address:

In this work, we developed a ratiometric fluorescent probe (NT) based on ICT framework in near-infrared (NIR) which could detect pH and viscosity simultaneously. Long emission wavelength in NIR could protect the probe from interference of background fluorescence and improve the accuracy of the test. Due to the presence of thiazole-salt, the probe possessed good water solubility and could respond immediately to pH in water system.

We describe a modified metaphyseal ulnar osteotomy to treat ulnar impaction syndrome with a reverse oblique sigmoid notch. Based on a computational analysis of radiographs, a modified wedge metaphyseal ulnar osteotomy was devised with its apex positioned at the ulnar styloid base to avoid impaction between the sigmoid notch and ulnar head. Subsequently, nine patients with ulnar impaction syndrome and a reverse oblique sigmoid notch underwent this operation, combined with arthroscopic exploration and transosseous triangular fibrocartilage complex repair.

ROS-responsive nanoparticle delivery of ferroptosis inhibitor prodrug to facilitate mesenchymal stem cell-mediated spinal cord injury repair.

Bioact Mater

August 2024

Department of Orthopedics, International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Spinal Cord Injury, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Spine and Spinal Cord Injury, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, 154 Anshan Road, Heping District, Tianjin, 300052, China.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a traumatic condition that results in impaired motor and sensory function. Ferroptosis is one of the main causes of neural cell death and loss of neurological function in the spinal cord, and ferroptosis inhibitors are effective in reducing inflammation and repairing SCI. Although human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (Huc-MSCs) can ameliorate inflammatory microenvironments and promote neural regeneration in SCI, their efficacy is greatly limited by the local microenvironment after SCI.

Objective: Primary resistance to trastuzumab frequently occurs in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive (+) breast cancer patients and remains a clinical challenge. Pyrotinib is a novel tyrosine kinase inhibitor that has shown efficacy in the treatment of HER2+ breast cancer. However, the efficacy of pyrotinib in HER2+ breast cancer with primary trastuzumab resistance is unknown.

Introduction: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a catastrophic event with devastating physical, social and occupational consequences for patients and their families. The number of patients with acute SCI in China continues to grow rapidly, but there have been no large prospective cohort studies of patients with acute SCI. This proposed study aims to establish a multicentre, extensive sample cohort of clinical data and biological samples of patients in China, which would aid the systematisation and standardisation of clinical research and treatment of acute SCI, thus reducing the heavy burden of acute SCI on patients and society.

Background: Nodulocystic acne is a severe form of acne, which is commonly treated with oral isotretinoin, hormones, or antibiotics. However, drug therapy often has some side effects and poor compliance. Fire needle combined with 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) is a simple, effective, short-term treatment with few adverse reactions, which is expected to be an effective physiotherapy for nodulocystic acne.

September 2024

Department of Breast Surgery, The Second Hospital of Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong 250033, China; Institute of Translational Medicine of Breast Disease Prevention and Treatment, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong 250033, China. Electronic address:

The development of tools that can provide a holistic picture of the evolution of the tumor microenvironment in response to intermittent fasting on the prevention of breast cancer is highly desirable. Here, we show, for the first time, the use of label-free Raman spectroscopy to reveal biomolecular alterations induced by intermittent fasting in the tumor microenvironment of breast cancer using a dimethyl-benzanthracene induced rat model. To quantify biomolecular alterations in the tumor microenvironment, chemometric analysis of Raman spectra obtained from untreated and treated tumors was performed using multivariate curve resolution-alternative least squares and support vector machines.
