Background And Aim: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by complex immunological interactions involving CD4 T cell subsets and the NLRP3 inflammasome, which influence inflammatory responses. This investigation focused on delineating the activation profiles of these components and their correlation with disease severity and activity, assessing their diagnostic implications in UC.

Methods: We conducted immunohistochemistry and ELISA assays to measure markers expression of CD4 T cell subsets and the NLRP3 inflammasome in UC patients versus controls.

Purpose: Mesenteric artery embolism (MAE) is a relatively uncommon abdominal surgical emergency, but it can lead to catastrophic clinical outcomes if the diagnosis is delayed. This study aims to build a prediction model of clinical-radiomics nomogram for early diagnosis of MAE based on non-contrast computed tomography (CT) and biomarkers.

Method: In this retrospective study, a total of 364 patients confirmed as MAE (n = 131) or non-MAE (n = 233) who were randomly divided into a training cohort (70%) and a validation cohort (30%).

Article Synopsis
  • This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the connection between circulating irisin levels and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), finding significantly lower irisin levels in MAFLD patients compared to healthy individuals.
  • The study included data from 15 case-control studies and highlighted that lower irisin levels were particularly evident in specific populations, such as Asians and individuals over 50, while also showing notable differences based on the severity of the disease and the presence of Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM).
  • Overall, the findings reinforce the association between circulating irisin and the progression of MAFLD, despite differences from previous research results.

One new polyketide asperfuranone D (1), four new sesquiterpenes derivatives aspergillone C-F (2-5) and three known compounds (6-8) were successfully isolated from Aspergillus nidulans LZ8, a fungicolous fungi from the macrofungal Ganoderma lingzhi. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses including ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV), mass spectrometry (MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculation. In addition, the anti-inflammatory activities of the new compounds were evaluated using LPS-induced RAW 264.

Deep learning based analysis of dynamic video ultrasonography for predicting cervical lymph node metastasis in papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Endocrine

November 2024

Department of Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging &Interventional Therapy, Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, Hangzhou Institute of Medicine (HIM), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 310022, China.

Background: Cervical lymph node metastasis (CLNM) is the most common form of thyroid cancer metastasis. Accurate preoperative CLNM diagnosis is of more importance in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). However, there is currently no unified methods to objectively predict CLNM risk from ultrasonography in PTC patients.

Long-term survival varies among hormone receptor-positive (HR+) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-) breast cancer patients and is seriously impaired by metastasis. Chromosomal instability (CIN) was one of the key drivers of breast cancer metastasis. Here we evaluate CIN and 10-year invasive disease-free survival (iDFS) and overall survival (OS) in HR+/HER2-- breast cancer.

Steroids serve as the primary medication for treating lupus nephritis (LN), however, steroid-resistance (SR) occurs sporadically in clinical practice, significantly affecting the therapeutic effect and long-term prognosis of patients. Our previous study found that panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) could partially reverse SR in LN. To further explore the role of PNS in reversing SR and reducing cardiovascular complications in LN, we conducted this study.

Observational studies have reported associations between atopic diseases, including allergic rhinitis (AR), asthma, atopic dermatitis (AD), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but the causal relationship remains unknown. We utilized pooled data from genome-wide association studies, qualified instrumental variables were screened according to the 3 hypotheses of MR, and bidirectional causality between atopic diseases and IBD was assessed using 2-sample Mendelian randomization analysis (2SMR). The results of our study suggest that AR increased the risk of Crohn disease (CD) (IVW OR = 1.

Background: As a second-line therapy, oxaliplatin/fluorouracil/leucovorin (FOLFOX) remains the standard of care for patients with biliary tract cancer (BTC); however, its efficacy is suboptimal. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether, compared with chemotherapy alone, the immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) combination regimen improved the overall survival (OS) in patients with advanced BTC.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with advanced BTC who received chemotherapy or ICI combination therapy as second-line (L2) treatment between January 1, 2018, and April 1, 2022, were retrospectively identified.

Article Synopsis
  • Parkinson's disease (PD) significantly impacts an individual's quality of life, with rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) being a common and serious non-motor symptom associated with it.
  • There is a bidirectional relationship between PD and RBD; RBD can both precede PD and worsen its prognosis.
  • The paper reviews the underlying pathological mechanisms linking the two conditions, including α-synuclein deposition and neuroinflammation, highlighting the need for more research on how RBD influences PD progression for future treatment strategies.

Background: Lactate dehydrogenase A () plays a crucial role in the final step of anaerobic glycolysis, converting L-lactate and NAD to pyruvate and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). Its high expression has been linked to tumorigenesis and patient survival in various human cancers. However, the full implications of 's role and its correlation with clinicopathological features in pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) remain to be fully understood.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the awareness of six common geriatric syndromes among older adults (65+) in China, using questionnaires completed by 6,653 participants from four regions.
  • Findings indicate that awareness levels varied, with falls being the most recognized syndrome (62%), while others like sarcopenia were less known (36%). Factors such as region, age, education, and living situation significantly influenced awareness rates.
  • The results highlight a concerning lack of awareness of geriatric syndromes among this population, indicating a need for targeted educational efforts to improve knowledge and understanding.

Article Synopsis
  • Depression and Parkinson's disease share characteristics that can exacerbate each other, with depression being both a precursor and a common symptom of Parkinson’s.
  • The relationship between these two conditions involves pharmacological risks, where antidepressants may increase the likelihood of developing Parkinson's disease while Parkinson's treatments can worsen depression.
  • The paper emphasizes the importance of gut microbiota alterations and their potential role in the interaction between depression and Parkinson's, suggesting that addressing these could lead to better prevention and treatment strategies.
