Purpose: Standard adjuvant chemotherapy for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) includes a taxane and an anthracycline. Concomitant capecitabine may be beneficial, but robust data to support this are lacking. The efficacy and safety of the addition of capecitabine into the TNBC adjuvant treatment regimen was evaluated.

Adrenaline induces chemoresistance in HT-29 colon adenocarcinoma cells.

Cancer Genet Cytogenet

April 2009

Department of Oncology, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhongshan University, 107 West Yanjiang Road, Guangzhou, 510120, Guangdong, China.

Psychological distress and its ensuing chronic elevation of plasma catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline) lead to poor response of tumors to chemotherapy, and constitute a poor prognostic factor for survival. Colorectal cancer patients suffer from various forms of psychological stress reflected in elevated plasma catecholamines, and their cancer cells express adrenergic receptors. Our objective was to investigate whether adrenergic activation contributes to the chemoresistance of colon cancers, and to explore the signal transduction pathway involved in the activation.

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhongshan University, Guangzhou, China.

Objective: To explore the better management of the stoma in endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy.

Method: To review the 102 chronic dacryocystitis patients (109 eyes), who underwent the endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy surgery with silver clips used to maintain the stoma. They were given combined therapy after the surgery, and were followed up for a period range from 3-73 months.

Alienation and adaptation are two of the principles and methods in translation, each possessing their own values. Alienation should be applied in translating linguistic content in order to transfer the imbedded cultural messages trustfully; while the principle of adaptation should be followed in linguistic structure translation due to the different thinking patterns between Chinese and English which results in a great linguistic structure difference. Therefore, the translator must express the original meaning trustfully, on the other hand, to make the Chinese version more smooth, linguistic structure should be transformed to conform to the thinking habit of the readers.

The purpose of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation by intra-bone marrow injection (IBM-HSCT) is to facilitate the homing of HSC. It has been recently proven in many animal experiments that different kinds of donor cells could efficiently home and engraft into the bone marrow by IBM-HSCT, which led to the rapid hemopoietic and immune recovery of recipients, preventing the development of GVHD, inducing the donor-specific tolerance in allogeneic organ transplantation, and promoting the survival rate of recipients. In this review, the effect of IBM-BMT and IBM-UCBT, the application of IBM injection technique in the study on HSC's biological characteristics, and its prospect for clinical HSCT were summarized.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is believed to be an important human pathogen causing carcinoma. But the effect of HCV infection on the alteration of cellular proliferation and apoptosis and the relationship between the effect and the development of hilar cholangiocarcinoma are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of HCV core protein on proliferation and apoptosis of hilar cholangiocarcinoma.

Aim: To explore the expression effect of mutated IkappaBalpha transfection on multidrug resistance gene (MDR-1) in hilar cholangiocarcinoma cells by inhibiting the activity of nuclear transcription factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB).

Methods: We used the mutated IkappaBalpha plasmid to transfect QBC(939)HCVC+ cells and QBC939 cells, and electrophoretic gel mobility shift assay (EMSA) to detect the binding activity of NF-kappaB DNA and the effect of the transfecting mutated IkappaBalpha plasmid on multidrug resistance gene (MDR-1) in hilar cholangiocarcinoma cells and its expression protein (P-GP).

Results: Plasmid DNA was digested by restriction enzymes Xbal and Hand III, and its product after electrophoresis showed two bands with a big difference in molecular weight, with a size of 4.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical value of CT scan on the early diagnosis of nasopharyngeal masses.

Method: The results of CT scans and pathological findings to the 59 cases of localized nasopharyngeal masses were summerized.

Result: Among the 44 cases diagnosed by CT scan as nasopharyngeal carcinoma, their pathological findings revealed 35 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, 2 cases of non Hodgkin's disease, 3 cases of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis, 3 cases of nasopharyngeal lymphadenosis, and 1 case of nasopharyngeal cyst.

Objective: To explore the most efficient culture system which can induce cord blood (CB)-mononuclear cells (MNC) to differentiate into mature T/NK cells in vitro.

Methods: The CB MNCs were cultured in six culture systems respectively for 4 weeks. The T/NK cell surface phenotypes were analyzed by flow cytometry and the absolute numbers of nucleated cells (NCs) were counted at each time point.
