  • Vertebral artery dissection (VAD) is a rare but serious condition caused by tearing in the vertebral artery, leading to symptoms like headache and dizziness, and requires timely diagnosis for better outcomes.
  • A young male patient experienced severe headache and seizures, and imaging revealed bilateral VAD and complications like brainstem infarcts, but digital subtraction angiography missed the dissection.
  • High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HRMRI) successfully confirmed the diagnosis of VAD and supported the patient's treatment plan, ultimately leading to significant recovery after rehabilitation.*

Remimazolam attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced neuroinflammation and cognitive dysfunction.

Behav Brain Res

January 2025

Department of Anesthesiology, The Second Affiliated Hospital of University of South China, Hengyang, China; Key Laboratory of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation (Huazhong University of Science and Technology), Ministry of Education, China. Electronic address:

Objective: Remimazolam, a novel benzodiazepine, is widely used as an anesthetic in endoscopic procedures; however, its effects on cognitive function remain unclear, limiting its broader application in general anaesthesia. Neuroinflammation is a well-established key factor in the etiology and progression of cognitive dysfunction, including conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, postoperative delirium, and postoperative cognitive dysfunction. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that remimazolam exerts anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, and clinical reports indicate a reduced incidence of postoperative delirium in patients treated with remimazolam.

The dynamic interplay between parenchymal hepatocytes and non-parenchymal cells (NPCs), such as macrophages, is an important mechanism for liver metabolic homeostasis. Although numerous endeavors have been made to identify the mediators of metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH), the molecular underpinnings of MASH progression remain poorly understood, and therapies to arrest MASH progression remain elusive. Herein, it is revealed that the expression of grancalcin (GCA) is upregulated in the macrophages of patients and rodents with MASH and correlates with MASH progression.

Ubiquitination is a crucial post-translational modification of proteins that mediates the degradation or functional regulation of specific proteins. This process participates in various biological processes such as cell growth, development, and signal transduction. E3 ubiquitin ligases play both positive and negative regulatory roles in osteogenesis and differentiation by ubiquitination-mediated degradation or stabilization of transcription factors, signaling molecules, and cytoskeletal proteins.

Department of Spinal Surgery, the Second Affiliated Hospital of University of South China, Hengyang 421000, Hunan, China; School of Life Science of Central South Universith, Changsha 410000, Hunan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how various factors relate to the development of redundant nerve roots (RNRs) in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis, analyzing clinical data from 116 individuals treated between January 2016 and June 2019.
  • - Patients were categorized into two groups based on the presence or absence of RNRs found through MRI scans; the RNRs group comprised 42 patients while the non-RNRs group had 74.
  • - Results showed that 36.2% of patients developed RNRs, with no significant differences in demographics (like age and gender) or preoperative pain levels between the two groups, although there were notable differences in symptom duration.

  • Interleukin-5 (IL-5) is linked to cardiovascular diseases like atherosclerosis and cardiac injury, prompting this study to explore its role in cardiac remodelling.
  • Researchers found that cardiac IL-5 levels decreased in response to angiotensin II (Ang II) infusion, primarily coming from cardiac macrophages, and that IL-5 deficiency worsened cardiac dysfunction and hypertrophy in mice.
  • The study suggests that IL-5 deficiency activates the STAT3 pathway, promoting M2 macrophage differentiation and increasing cardiac remodelling, indicating that IL-5 could be a potential target for preventing cardiac issues.

Anlotinib plus docetaxel vs. docetaxel alone for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer patients who failed first-line treatment: A multicenter, randomized phase II trial.

Lung Cancer

May 2024

Department of Thoracic Medical Oncology, Hunan Cancer Hospital/The Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University, Changsha, China. Electronic address:

Objectives: Given the modest efficacy of docetaxel in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), this study assesses the therapeutic potential and safety profile of anlotinib in combination with docetaxel compared to docetaxel monotherapy as a second-line therapy for patients with advanced NSCLC.

Materials And Methods: In this phase II study, patients with advanced NSCLC experiencing failure with first-line platinum-based regimens were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive either anlotinib plus docetaxel or docetaxel alone. Primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS), with overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), and safety as secondary endpoints.

J Adv Res

March 2024

National Clinical Research Center for Metabolic Diseases, Key Laboratory of Diabetes Immunology, Ministry of Education, and Department of Metabolism and Endocrinology, The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Changsha 410011, Hunan, China. Electronic address:

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), an emerging global healthcare problem, has become the leading cause of liver transplantation in recent decades. No effective therapies in the clinic have been proven due to the incomplete understanding of the pathogenesis of NASH, and further studies are expected to continue to delve into the mechanisms of NASH. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), which are small lipid membrane vesicles carrying proteins, microRNAs and other molecules, have been identified to play a vital role in cell-to-cell communication and are involved in the development and progression of various diseases.
