Chrysanthemum indicum Linné (Asteraceae) is a common Chinese herbal medicine that has been traditionally used for the treatment of inflammation, hypertension and neoplastic diseases in China. However, the mechanism that account for the inhibitory activity of Chrysanthemum indicum Linné against cancer cells is poorly understood. We investigated the effect of Chrysanthemum indicum Linné extracts (CILE) on isoproterenol (ISO) induced growth of human hepatocellar carcinoma (HCC) cells in correlation with the intracellular activity of MAPK/ERK1/2.

Objective: To improve diagnostic methods to screen biomarkers for early diagnosis in lung adenocarcinoma by employing laser capture microdissection (LCM) and surface-enhanced laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) and support vector machine (SVM).
Methods: Frozen sections of thickness 8 microm were made using 6 cases of fresh lung cancer tissues and 4 cases of matched normal lung tissues. The sections were stained by improved HE solution.

Objective: To identify the changes of expression of p38MAPK in the olfactory bulb (OB) of rats with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and to explore the functional mechanism of p38MAPK in the pathological changes of AD.
Methods: AD animal model was established by injecting amyloid-beta peptide 25-35 into the lateral cerebral ventricle of rats. The learning and memory abilities of rats were measured by Y-maze experiment.

Objective: To reveal the expression trends of HIF-1alpha in hippocampus of different age rats, investigate the role of HIF-1alpha in the aging process of nervous system.
Methods: The cerebral tissues was collectd from rats of different age, including 3, 18, 24, 36 months old. There were 6 rats in each age group.

Segmental bone defects are a common obstacle in major orthopedic procedures, and the treatment of these defects remains a challenging clinical problem. Bone tissue engineering has been attracting much attention in recent years. We evaluated the ability of the specific combination of 3 microg rhVEGF(165) with a novel porous beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) scaffold coated with fibrin sealant (FS) to facilitate bone regeneration.

Angioleiomyomas (ALMs) involving the central nervous system are exceedingly rare, and no ALM involving the parafalx region has ever been clinically reported. We report the first case of ALM involving the parafalx region on its surgical procedure and radiological feature. A 50-year-old man had a 6 month history of frontal headache and occasional seizure attacks.

Epiphyseal pieces from young rat's costal cartilage were predigested for 30min by hyaluronidase then digested by collagenase for 1h with gentle beating applied. Resulted grape-like chondrocytes connecting with the residual cartilage matrix were seeded in plastic culture dishes and 4 passages at about 12-days interval were carried out. Morphological observations were performed daily.

Background/aims: Several shortcomings have limited the routine use of autogenous vascularized bone graft. The present study investigates the prefabrication of vascularized scaffold with the desired shape and microarchitecture combined with recombinant human vascular endothelial growth factor 165 (rhVEGF(165)) to mimic autogenous vascularized bone graft.
Methods: Eighty-five porous calcium phosphate cement scaffolds constructed by rapid prototyping technology were divided into four groups: group A [rhVEGF(165)-fibrin sealant (FS) scaffold], group B (hVEGF(165) scaffold), group C (FS scaffold), and group D (scaffold alone).

Aim: To observe the effect of proteasome inhibitor MG-132 on severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) and associated lung injury of rats.
Methods: Male adult SD rats were randomly divided into SAP group, sham-operation group, and MG-132 treatment group. A model of SAP was established by injection of 5% sodium taurocholate into the biliary-pancreatic duct of rats.

Objective: To study the effect of age on the percent value for free prostate specific antigen (fPSA) from men, and the relationships between the percent fPSA and the pathological grade or the clinical stage of prostate cancer (PCa), and also to determine appropriate reference value range for Chinese men.
Methods: A total of 713 participants were enrolled into the study, with the serum PSA, fPSA measured and the percent fPSA calculated. Out of 713, 679 men without prostate disease were divided into 5 groups by age, and then the relationships were studied between man age and PSA, fPSA or percent fPSA, respectively.

Objective: To investigate HLA-DRB1 gene polymorphism in patients with Keshan disease (KD) in the north of China, and its relation to KD in the core families.
Methods: Polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific oligonucleotide probe (PCR-SSOP) method was used to determine HLA-DRB1 genotypes in 118 KD patients, including 63 with latent KD and 55 with chronic KD. Sixty-five normal from the same area were selected as controls.

This study was purposed to investigate the effects of thalidomide on proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs), levels of lymphocyte subsets, secretion of cytokines and its killing activity, and to elucidate the immunoregulation mechanisms in treatment of multiple myeloma with thalidomide. The method of MTT was used to detect the effects of thalidomide on the proliferations and the cytotoxic activity of PBMNC; the flow cytometer was used to analyze the lymphocyte subsets; the ELISA was used to measure the concentrations of cytokines in culture supernatants. The results showed that thalidomide enhanced the proliferations of the CD8+ T, NK cells in PHA-stimulated PBMNC from healthy volunteers, increased the secretion of IL-6 significantly, and decreased the secretion of IFN-gamma, and the secretions of IL-2 and IL-10 were not affected.

Aim: To investigate the biological function of HBcAg in pathogenesis of HBV replication in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).
Methods: HBcAg region was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and HBV HBcAg bait plasmid pGBKT7-HBcAg was constructed by routine molecular biological methods. Then the recombinant plasmid DNA was transformed into yeast AH109.
