Objective: To explore clinical results of ipsilateral total knee and hip arthroplasty at stage I for the treatment of ipsilateral hip and knee diseases.
Methods: From January 2008 to September 2016, 7 patients with ipsilateral knee and hip disease were treated by simultaneous total knee and hip arthroplasty at stage I, including 4 males and 3 females aged from 47 to 68 years old, the courses of disease ranged from 6 to 29 years; 3 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 3 patients with ankylosing spondylitis, and 1 patient with senile hip and knee arthritis. Operation time, intraoperative blood loss and local wounds during hospitalization were observed and recorded, and Harris hip score and HSS knee score were used to evaluate therapeutic effects.

: Acute postoperative pain can lead to long hospital stays, dysfunction, and even chronic pain. Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are important in pain signaling. The activity of MAPKs are negatively regulated by dual specificity phosphatases such as mitogen- activated protein kinase phosphatase-1 (MKP-1), which specifically dephosphorylates MAPK p38.

For the prevention of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in cirrhotic patients with ascites, prophylactic antibiotics are recommended as a standard regimen. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of norfloxacin (N), ciprofloxacin (C), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (T-S), and rifaximin (R) in the prevention of SBP. We searched the electronic databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science from inception till 1 August 2018.

Recent studies have confirmed the efficacy of sorafenib for patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma; however, its efficacy and safety as an adjuvant therapy in patients with non-metastatic and loco-regional renal cell carcinoma after surgery remains controversial. Thus, the aim of the present retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of adjuvant sorafenib therapy in such patients from 8 centers in northwestern China that were treated from August 2009 to December 2016.After surgery, the patients (n = 48) received oral sorafenib for 3 months.

Background: The treatment of acetabular protrusions during total hip arthroplasty of patients with rheumatoid arthritis is difficult. A lack of bone stock, deficient medial cup support, and medialization of the joint center in those with protrusio acetabuli must be addressed during acetabular reconstruction. The purpose of this study was to assess the short-term clinical results of total hip arthroplasty in patients with severe acetabular protrusions secondary to rheumatoid arthritis.

The role of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery (CRTS) compared with surgery alone (SA) for resectable esophageal carcinoma has been established by several randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The present study aimed to investigate the difference in survival between the two treatments by a review of meta-analyses. Related research indicators were extracted from RCTs investigating CRTS or SA for resectable esophageal carcinoma by searching electronic databases for eligible articles.

Cardiolipin (CL) is a phospholipid localized in the mitochondria, which is essential for mitochondrial structure and function. Human cardiolipin synthase 1 (CRLS1) is important in regulating phosphatidylglycerol (PG) remodeling and CL biosynthesis. However, the expression and distinct prognostic value of CRLS1 in neoplasms, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), is not well established.

Papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC) is the second most common subtype of renal cell carcinoma, and it lacks effective therapeutic targets and prognostic molecular biomarkers. Attention has been increasingly focused on long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), which can act as competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) to compete for shared microRNAs (miRNAs) in the tumorigenesis of human tumors. Therefore, to clarify the functional roles of lncRNAs with respect to the mediated ceRNA network in PRCC, we comprehensively integrated expression profiles, including data on mRNAs, lncRNAs and miRNAs obtained from 289 PRCC tissues and 32 normal tissues in The Cancer Genome Atlas.

Background: Developmental hip dysplasia (DDH) may lead to severe acetabular and femoral abnormalities that can render total hip arthroplasty (THA) challenging, especially in DDH patients with a small physique. Most conventional cemented or cementless femoral components are often difficult to implant in the narrow femoral canal and require slight version correction during surgery. The aim of this study was to present the mid-term results of THA in the treatment of DDH patients with a small physique using a cementless Wagner cone prosthesis (Zimmer®, US).

Background: BMPs play important roles in regulating stem cell proliferation and differentiation. Using adenovirus-mediated expression of the 14 types of BMPs we demonstrated that BMP9 is one of the most potent BMPs in inducing osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which was undetected in the early studies using recombinant BMP9 proteins. Endogenous BMPs are expressed as a precursor protein that contains an N-terminal signal peptide, a prodomain and a C-terminal mature peptide.

The advent of fluorescence-based quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) has revolutionized the quantification of gene expression analysis in many fields, including life sciences, agriculture, forensic science, molecular diagnostics, and medicine. While SYBR Green-based qPCR is the most commonly-used platform due to its inexpensive nature and robust chemistry, quantifying the expression of genes with low abundance or RNA samples extracted from highly restricted or limited sources can be challenging because the detection sensitivity of SYBR Green-based qPCR is limited. Here, we develop a novel and effective touchdown qPCR (TqPCR) protocol by incorporating a 4-cycle touchdown stage prior to the quantification amplification stage.

One of the greatest obstacles to current cancer treatment efforts is the development of drug resistance by tumors. Despite recent advances in diagnostic practices and surgical interventions, many neoplasms demonstrate poor response to adjuvant or neoadjuvant radiation and chemotherapy. As a result, the prognosis for many patients afflicted with these aggressive cancers remains bleak.

RNA interference (RNAi) denotes sequence-specific mRNA degradation induced by short interfering double-stranded RNA (siRNA) and has become a revolutionary tool for functional annotation of mammalian genes, as well as for development of novel therapeutics. The practical applications of RNAi are usually achieved by expressing short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) or siRNAs in cells. However, a major technical challenge is to simultaneously express multiple siRNAs to silence one or more genes.
