Relationship between protein arginine methyltransferase and cardiovascular disease (Review).

Biomed Rep

November 2022

Guangxi Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Neuroscience, Guilin Medical University, Guilin, Guangxi 541199, P.R. China.

Protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) are widely found in eukaryotes and regulate gene expression and post-translational modifications. PRMT1-PRMT6 have important roles in the pathology of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including atherosclerosis, heart failure and myocardial hypertrophy. Although these enzymes are also closely associated with various CVDs, the mechanisms of the involvement of PRMTs in the regulation of CVD have remained largely elusive.

Tea seed saponins (TSS) are oleanolane-type pentacyclic triterpenoid saponin mixtures with various pharmacological effects. We aimed to explore the effects of a total of 4 weeks intragastric administration of TSS (140 mg/kg·day) combined with aerobic exercise (AE) on lipid metabolism and its associated oxidative stress in HFD-induced obese mice and to investigate the possible molecular mechanisms. TSS + AE intervention significantly reduced body weight and the adiposity index (including subcutaneous, epididymal, perirenal, and abdominal adipose) in obese mice; improved dyslipidemia by lowering serum TC, TG, and LDL-c levels; and increased HDL-c levels.

December 2022

Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution and Integrative Omics, Guilin Medical University, Education Department of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, PR China; Department of Oncology, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guilin Medical University, Guilin, PR China.

Ferroptosis, a type of iron-dependent cell death, has been linked with the occurrence and progression of malignant tumors, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Fucoidan, an algal fucose-rich molecule, has been discovered preclinically to have an anti-CRC signature. Although some underlying mechanisms are reported, many signaling pathways associated with ferroptosis in fucoidan treatment of CRC are still unidentified.

August 2022

Key Laboratory of Tumor Immunology and Microenvironmental Regulation of Guangxi, Guilin Medical University, Guilin, China.

As we all know, female obesity has become a global epidemic, which is usually accompanied with endocrine and metabolic disorders. Obese women are more likely to experience reproductive problems, including infertility, embryonic developmental defects and abnormality in offspring. Female obesity is a complex multifactorial condition, where there are many mechanisms involved in the effects of overweight and obesity on the development of these reproductive disorders.

Background: Accumulating evidences have revealed that the abnormal N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is closely associated with the occurrence, development, progression and prognosis of cancer. It is noteworthy that m6A modification is widely existed in circRNAs and found its key biological functions in regulating circRNAs metabolism. However, the role of m6A modified circRNAs in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • Pleural effusion is commonly caused by respiratory diseases, particularly tuberculosis and malignancy, but diagnosing tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) and malignant pleural effusion (MPE) remains difficult, despite the role of monocytes in these conditions.
  • A study analyzed samples from 40 TPE patients, 40 MPE patients, and 24 other pleural effusion patients, measuring various chemokines and cytokines, and comparing different subsets of monocytes using flow cytometry and PCR to identify potential diagnostic markers.
  • Results showed higher levels of certain chemokines and cytokines in TPE, with a significant increase in nonclassical monocytes in TPE compared to MPE, suggesting that

Front Genet

June 2022

Guangxi Key Laboratory of Environmental Exposomics and Entire Lifecycle Health, Guangxi Health Commission Key Laboratory of Entire Lifecycle Health and Care, Guilin Medical University, Guilin, China.

The involvement of oxidative stress in the pathological process of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) gives rise to the interest in exploring the association of genetic variations in antioxidant metallothionein () genes with HDP susceptibility. Seventeen single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) in genes were selected to conduct genotyping based on a case-control study consisting of 371 HDP cases (pregnancy with chronic hypertension (66), gestational hypertension (172), and preeclampsia or preeclampsia superimposed on chronic hypertension (133)) and 479 controls. The association between SNPs in and the risk of HDP was estimated with unconditional logistic regression analysis and further tested with the false-positive report probability (FPRP) procedure.
