The complex pathogenesis of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) makes it challenging to identify effective treatment methods. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-12 can degrade elastin as well as various extracellular matrix (ECM) components, which is associated with cancer progression. However, the relationship between MMP-12 and CRPC progression is poorly understood.

As a predominant trigger of acute kidney injury, renal ischemia-reperfusion injury can cause permanent renal impairment, and the effective therapies are lacking. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) plays a critical regulatory role in a variety of biological activities. This study was conducted to explore the functional of FGF21 in renal ischemia-reperfusion injury and to discuss the hidden reaction mechanism.

Background: Hypertensive heart disease (HHD) is a common cause of cardiovascular disease and mortality worldwide, and its burden is increasing with aging populations.
Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and mortality rates of HHD in mainland China and Taiwan Province using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019), and forecast the development trend of HHD from 2020 to 2024.
Methods: We obtained data on number of cases, deaths, crude prevalence rate, crude death rate, age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), and age-standardized death rate (ASDR) for mainland China and Taiwan Province from 1990 to 2019 from the GBD 2019.

This study aimed to assess the utility of serum YKL-40 and serum dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP4) as biomarkers for distinguishing between type 2 (T2)-high and T2-low asthma in the Chinese population. Additionally, we sought to explore the associations of serum YKL-40 and DPP4 levels with asthma characteristics and conventional markers. A real-world observational cross-sectional study was conducted, involving a total of 75 adult asthma patients.

Introduction: The automatic segmentation of the liver is a crucial step in obtaining quantitative biomarkers for accurate clinical diagnosis and computer-aided decision support systems. This task is challenging due to the frequent presence of noise and sampling artifacts in computerized tomography (CT) images, as well as the complex background, variable shapes, and blurry boundaries of the liver. Standard segmentation of medical images based on full-supervised convolutional networks demands accurate dense annotations.

Rationale: Rhabdomyolysis can be an uncommon complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. However, the diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis could be easily missed due to its atypical clinical presentations. We present a patient with a history of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who contracted COVID-19 and subsequently developed rhabdomyolysis.

Globally, HIV infection causes significant morbidity and mortality, and is a major public health problem. Despite the fact that widespread use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has substantially altered the natural history of HIV infection from originally being a universally lethal disease to now being a chronic medical condition for those taking appropriate treatment, approximately 10-40% of people living with HIV (PLWH) who take effective ART and maintain long-term viral suppression fail to achieve normalization of CD4 + T-cell counts. This phenomenon is referred to as incomplete immune reconstitution or immunological non-response.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) influence many aspects of pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) carcinogenesis, including tumor cell proliferation, angiogenesis, invasion, and metastasis. A six-gene prognostic signature was constructed for PAAD based on the 189 CAF marker genes identified in single-cell RNA-sequencing data. Multivariate analyses showed that the risk score was independently prognostic for survival in the TCGA (P < 0.

Apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1), identified as a prospective cancer biomarker, plays a vital role in the occurrence and progression of cancer cell lines and impacts on genome stability. However, conventional approaches typically rely on the interactions between the antigen and antibody, limiting their utility for qualitative assessments of APE1 expression. Herein, an all-in-one enzymatic DNA network (EDN) assay with catalytic hairpin assembly for label-free and ultrasensitive detection of APE1 has been developed.

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) can noninvasively focus sound energy to deep tumor tissues and activate sonosensitizer (such as chlorin e6(Ce6)) to produce antitumor effects. However, due to the hypoxic microenvironment of the tumor, the effect of sonodynamic therapy is limited. In this work, we successfully synthesized Platinum-Boron-Phosphorus ternary nanoparticles (Pt-B-P NPs) for the first time to efficiently catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (HO) in tumor tissues to produce sufficient oxygen (O) and improve the effect of sonodynamic treatment of ovarian cancer.
