Background: The aim of this study is to assess the burden of AF-related hospitalizations inclusive of inflation-adjusted cost-of-care and length-of-stay (LOS) among cancer patients and the impact of direct current cardioversion (DCCV) on these outcomes.
Methods: Using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS), patients hospitalized with either a primary or secondary diagnosis of AF and comorbid cancer were identified and both cost of hospitalization and LOS were evaluated for each group. Subgroup analyses were performed for specific cancer types (breast, lung, colon, prostate and lymphoma), and those receiving DCCV.

Current management of isolated CoA, localized narrowing of the aortic arch in the absence of other congenital heart disease, is a success story with improved prenatal diagnosis, high survival and improved understanding of long-term complication. Isolated CoA has heterogenous presentations, complex etiologic mechanisms, and progressive pathophysiologic changes that influence outcome. End-to-end or extended end-to-end anastomosis are the favored surgical approaches for isolated CoA in infants and transcatheter intervention is favored for children and adults.

Breast cancer and heart failure share several known clinical cardiovascular risk factors, including age, obesity, glucose dysregulation, cholesterol dysregulation, hypertension, atrial fibrillation and inflammation. However, to fully comprehend the complex interplay between risk of breast cancer and heart failure, factors attributed to both biological and social determinants of health must be explored in risk-assessment. There are several social factors that impede implementation of prevention strategies and treatment for breast cancer and heart failure prevention, including socioeconomic status, neighborhood disadvantage, food insecurity, access to healthcare, and social isolation.

Background: A number of large bore guide catheters are currently available for use in neuroendovascular surgery. This study represents a multi-institutional retrospective series of patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy with the use of a TracStar Large Distal Platform (LDP) guide catheter and assessed its performance in vivo in 107 patients.
Objective: To review a multi-institutional initial experience with the TracStar LDP guide catheter during mechanical thrombectomy for emergent large vessel occlusion (ELVO).

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of gynecologic cancer-related death in the United States. Historically, studies have demonstrated that ovarian cancer is a heterogeneous disease with several patient and oncologic characteristics, including BRCA status and residual disease at surgery, known to be predictive of clinical outcomes. However, during the last decade, the discovery and approval of bevacizumab and poly(adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase inhibitors have moved the frontline treatment paradigm beyond platinum-doublet therapy for women with advanced ovarian cancer.

Objectives/hypothesis: Partially decellularized tracheal scaffolds have emerged as a potential solution for long-segment tracheal defects. These grafts have exhibited regenerative capacity and the preservation of native mechanical properties resulting from the elimination of all highly immunogenic cell types while sparing weakly immunogenic cartilage. With partial decellularization, new considerations must be made about the viability of preserved chondrocytes.

In this series of talks and the accompanying panel session, leaders from the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons discuss issues faced by Asian Americans and the importance of the role of mentors and allyship in professional development in the advancement of Asian Americans in leadership roles. Barriers, including the model minority myth, are addressed. The heterogeneity of the Asian American population and disparities in healthcare and in research, specifically as relates to Asian Americans, also are examined.

Few medical schools have required experience in surgical pathology during the clinical years. After introducing a pilot and preliminary surgical pathology clinical experience into the curriculum, we initiated a required 3rd-year medical student surgical pathology clinical experience that consisted of a one hour introductory lecture; one hour gross room, histology, and immunohistochemistry laboratory introduction; and one hour of one-on-one case sign-out preceptorship with a subspecialty surgical pathologist within the surgery and obstetrics/gynecology block. Concepts that were covered included specimen processing, intraoperative frozen section consultation, completing specimen requisitions, interpreting synoptic reports, and pTNM staging.

CD24 is a glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchored cell surface glycoprotein with a variety of immunomodulatory functions such as inhibition of thymic generation of autoreactive T cells, regulation of antigen presenting cell functions, and mediation of autoimmunity. Given the autoimmune nature of FoxP3 regulatory T cells and their importance in autoimmune diseases, we hypothesize that CD24 regulates the generation and functions of Treg cells. Through the analysis of the Treg repertoire in two strains of CD24-deficient mice, we found that CD24 does not globally affect the thymic generation of Treg cells.

Background: The lack of consensus on whether bilateral oophorectomy impacts risk of developing breast cancer among BRCA1 mutation carriers might be attributed to various biases, specifically, cancer-induced testing bias due to inclusion of prevalent cases. We conducted two complementary matched case-control analyses to evaluate the association of oophorectomy and BRCA1 breast cancer.
Methods: A research questionnaire was administered every two years to collect information on exposures and disease.

Context: Repetitive joint use is a risk factor for osteoarthritis, which is a leading cause of disability. Sports requiring a racket or bat to perform repetitive high-velocity impacts may increase the risk of thumb-base osteoarthritis. However, this hypothesis remains untested.

Background: COVID-19 causes hypercoagulability, but the association between coagulopathy and hypoxemia in critically ill patients has not been thoroughly explored. This study hypothesized that severity of coagulopathy would be associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome severity, major thrombotic events, and mortality in patients requiring intensive care unit-level care.
Methods: Viscoelastic testing by rotational thromboelastometry and coagulation factor biomarker analyses were performed in this prospective observational cohort study of critically ill COVID-19 patients from April 2020 to October 2020.

Scrotal leiomyosarcoma arises from the subcutaneous smooth muscle layer and is an exceptionally rare disease process, with only six patients in the largest reported case series. This rarity creates uncertainties regarding diagnosis, surgical management, and clinical outcomes. Our purpose was to retrospectively describe our institutional experience with scrotal leiomyosarcoma from 2010 to 2022.

Introduction: Pancreatic cancer is characterised by severe mid-back and epigastric pain caused by tumour invasion of the coeliac nerve plexus. This pain is often poorly managed with standard treatments. This clinical trial investigates a novel approach in which high-dose radiation (radiosurgery) is targeted to the retroperitoneal coeliac plexus nerve bundle.

Background: Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is a clinical syndrome manifesting with cystic lung disease and pneumothorax. Features of BHD result from the loss-of-function mutations of the folliculin () gene. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), characterised by an irreversible airflow limitation, is primarily caused by cigarette smoking.

Human epidemiology suggests a protective effect of tomatoes or tomato phytochemicals, such as lycopene, on prostate cancer risk. However, human epidemiology alone cannot reveal causal relations. Laboratory animal models of prostate cancer provide opportunities to investigate hypotheses regarding dietary components in precisely controlled, experimental systems, contributing to our understanding of diet and cancer risk relations.

Background: Chest radiation therapy (RT) has been associated with increased cardiac morbidity and mortality in numerous studies including the landmark Darby study published in 2013 demonstrating a linear increase in cardiac mortality with increasing mean heart radiation dose. However, the extent to which cardiotoxicity has been incorporated as an endpoint in prospective RT studies remains unknown.
Methods: We queried clincaltrials.
