Humans spend approximately 80-90% of their time indoors. In current practice, indoor temperatures in many buildings are controlled very tightly. However, allowing more variation in indoor temperature results in more energy-efficient buildings and could potentially improve human metabolic and cardiovascular health.

Active brown adipose tissue (BAT) has, since it rediscovery in adult humans in 2009, received much attention for its ability to increase energy expenditure when activated. By means of mitochondrial uncoupling activity BAT's main function is to produce heat instead of storing energy such as in white adipose tissue (WAT). Therefore, BAT is considered a new potential target to treat obesity and the metabolic syndrome.

Predicted energy use of dwellings often deviates from the actual energy use. Thermoregulatory behavior of the occupant might explain this difference. Such behavior is influenced by thermal sensation and thermal comfort.
