Epstein-Barr virus status drives morphological and molecular intra-tumour heterogeneity in gastric cancer: insights from a case report and literature review.

This case report describes a rare case of bi-phenotypic gastric cancer with two distinct, but clonally related, histological components. The first component, associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, exhibited the morphological features of gastric carcinoma with lymphoid stroma, suggesting that EBV, as an effective immunogenic factor, may trigger a prominent immune response within the tumour microenvironment. The second component, which was EBV-negative, displayed tubular/papillary morphology and features of increased biological aggressiveness, such as high-grade areas and lymphatic invasion.

Cardiovascular preventive service access challenges among African immigrants: a discussion paper.

This paper highlights cardiovascular disease (CVD) preventive access challenges and potential intervention strategies that address cardiovascular preventive service access gaps among African immigrants living in developed countries. Migration, coupled with changes in dietary habits, socio-economic factors, and cultural adjustments, contributes to a heightened risk of CVD among African immigrants. This risk is compounded by a lack of targeted preventive interventions and culturally tailored programmes, as well as challenges related to language barriers, health literacy, and digital literacy.

Infrared Ion Spectroscopy of Gaseous [Cu(2,2'-Bipyridine)]: Investigation of Jahn-Teller Elongation Versus Compression.

Symmetry breaking is ubiquitous in chemical transformations and affects various physicochemical properties of materials and molecules; Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion of hexa-coordinated transition-metal-ligand complexes falls within this paradigm. An uneven occupancy of degenerate 3d-orbitals forces the complex to adopt an axially elongated or compressed geometry, lowering the symmetry of the system and lifting the degeneracy. Coordination complexes of Cu are known to exhibit axial elongation, while compression is far less common, although this may be due to the lack of rigorous experimental verification.

Use of AI in Cardiac CT and MRI: A Scientific Statement from the ESCR, EuSoMII, NASCI, SCCT, SCMR, SIIM, and RSNA.

Artificial intelligence (AI) offers promising solutions for many steps of the cardiac imaging workflow, from patient and test selection through image acquisition, reconstruction, and interpretation, extending to prognostication and reporting. Despite the development of many cardiac imaging AI algorithms, AI tools are at various stages of development and face challenges for clinical implementation. This scientific statement, endorsed by several societies in the field, provides an overview of the current landscape and challenges of AI applications in cardiac CT and MRI.

Probing London Dispersion in Proton-Bound Onium Ions: Are Alkyl-Alkyl Steric Interactions Reliably Modeled?

We report spectroscopic and spectrometric experiments that probe the London dispersion interaction between -butyl substituents in three series of covalently linked, protonated -pyridines in the gas phase. Molecular ions in the three test series, along with several reference molecules for control, were electrosprayed from solution into the gas phase and then probed by infrared multiphoton dissociation spectroscopy and trapped ion mobility spectrometry. The observed N-H stretching frequencies provided an experimental readout diagnostic of the ground-state geometry of each ion, which could be furthermore compared to a second, independent structural readout via the collision cross section.

A solution method for active suppression of reflections in anechoic chambers.

A solution method to improve an anechoic chamber at low frequencies with the use of active noise control is presented. The approach uses the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral to compute the reflected sound field resulting from the primary sources together with an algorithm to compute the filter coefficients of a controller driving secondary sources on the walls of the enclosure using reference signals as inputs, which are measured on a contour enclosing the primary sources. A causal frequency domain method with conjugate gradient iterations is derived to determine the controller.

It takes two flints to start a fire: A focus group study into PhD supervision for responsible research.

Background: Supervision is one important means of promoting responsible research. However, what a responsible supervisor should do and how to foster a responsible supervisory climate is unclear.

Methods: Between January 2023 and February 2024, I conducted 17 focus groups in The Netherlands and Denmark with 85 PhD candidates and PhD supervisors to understand what practices supervisors engage in to promote responsible conduct of research and what strategies could promote a responsible supervisory relationship.

Combining Hyperpolarized Xe MR Imaging and Spectroscopy to Non-Invasively Estimate Pulmonary Vascular Resistance.

Hyperpolarized Xe MRI/MRS enables quantitative mapping of function in lung airspaces, membrane tissue, and red blood cells (RBCs) within the pulmonary capillaries. The RBC signal also exhibits cardiogenic oscillations that are reduced in pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension (PH). This effect is obscured in patients with concomitant defects in transfer from airspaces to RBCs, which increase RBC oscillation amplitudes.

Near-universal prevalence of central adiposity in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: the PARAGON-HF trial.

Background And Aims: An expansion of fat mass is an integral feature of patients with heart failure and preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). While body mass index (BMI) is the most common anthropometric measure, a measure of central adiposity-the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR)-focuses on body fat content and distribution; is not distorted by bone or muscle mass, sex, or ethnicity; and may be particularly relevant in HFpEF.

Methods: The PARAGON-HF trial randomized 4796 patients with heart failure and ejection fraction ≥45% to valsartan or sacubitril/valsartan.

Steam sterilisation of disposable surgical gowns does not compromise resistance to wet microbial penetration.

Background: Reuse of disposable medical products is common practice in veterinary medicine; however, studies on the safety of such reuse are often lacking. This study aimed to determine whether steam sterilisation of disposable surgical gowns compromises their resistance to wet microbial penetration.

Methods: Twenty surgical gowns were removed from their sterile packaging, manipulated, wetted, dried and subsequently repacked and steam sterilised.

Suckling Rat Pup Model: Do Caprine Milk Lactoferrin and Immunoglobulins Have Different Digestion and Absorption Properties from That of Human and Bovine Species?

This study aimed to investigate the digestion and absorption properties of caprine milk serum proteins in comparison to human and bovine species by using rat pups to mimic preterm infants. The results indicate that caprine lactoferrin (LTF) had a shorter retention time in the intestine and released a greater number of fragments, resembling human milk LTF more closely. In contrast, caprine immunoglobulins (Igs) were similar to bovine Igs and both exhibited a longer retention time in the intestine.

Friends' influence on Adolescents' loss of control eating: The moderating role of self-esteem, fear of negative evaluation, and body dissatisfaction.

Friends' influence may importantly contribute to the development of adolescent disordered eating behaviors. However, little is known about the influence of friends on loss of control eating. This study investigated whether friend-reported loss of control eating was associated with changes in adolescents' own loss of control eating 1 year later and tested whether adolescents with lower self-esteem, higher fear of negative evaluation, and higher body dissatisfaction were more susceptible to friends' influence.

Background: Management of children with functional abdominal pain (FAP) or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is difficult in primary care. When education and reassurance do not alleviate symptoms, primary care physicians lack treatment options for children with FAP or IBS. Home-based guided hypnotherapy is a promising treatment because of its accessibility.

Evaluation of phenotypic risk indicators for the development of alopecia X (hair cycle arrest) in Pomeranian dogs in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Background: Alopecia X (AX) is a common noninflammatory alopecic condition of Pomeranian dogs with an unknown cause. While a genetic aetiology is suspected, no current tests can predict the development of this disorder or confirm the aetiology. Therefore, identifying potential risk indicators for the development of AX would be of value in this breed.

Reference values for the Teller Acuity Cards II (TAC II) in infants and preverbal children, a meta-analysis.

Purpose: The Teller Acuity Card (TAC) procedure is a preferential-looking method to assess visual acuity in infants and preverbal children and provides a quantitative measure of grating acuity. Several studies containing reference values have been published, the majority based on an older version of the TAC card set. In 2003, a new version of the TAC was released, called the TAC II.

This area has the greatest heterogeneity of sympatric fiddler crab species of any portion of the planet.

Microcirculatory depth of focus measurement shows reduction of tissue edema by albumin resuscitation in burn patients.

Background: Severe burns induce volume shifts via capillary leaks, eventually requiring massive fluid resuscitation and promoting tissue edema. Albumin may help to mitigate the edema, thereby improving perfusion. This study shows that sublingual microcirculation measurements can quantify both tissue perfusion and edema.

BCG-Induced DNA Methylation Changes Improve Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccine Immunity Without Decreasing the Risk for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Infection.

Background: The BCG vaccine induces trained immunity, an epigenetic-mediated increase in innate immune responsiveness. Therefore, this clinical trial evaluated if BCG-induced trained immunity could decrease coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related frequency or severity.

Methods: A double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of healthcare workers randomized participants to vaccination with BCG TICE or placebo (saline).

Exploring the Research Landscape of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Stroke: A Bibliometric Review.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has gained significant attention as a potential therapeutic tool in stroke rehabilitation, promoting neuroplasticity and enhancing motor and cognitive recovery. Despite growing research, the field's evolution and key trends remain underexplored. This study aims to perform a bibliographic analysis of publications related to tDCS and stroke rehabilitation to assess the growth of the field.

Being in a position to know: attuned responsiveness as the hallmark of experiential knowledge and expertise in mental healthcare.

Inclusion of people with lived experience into various mental healthcare settings is rapidly increasing. In this article we explicate and address two challenges that hinder this development. First, a descriptive challenge: what is the unique and complementary epistemic contribution of people with lived experience in mental healthcare, precisely? Second, a normative challenge: how to evaluate these contributions of people with lived experience to mental healthcare? To address these challenges, we propose a novel conceptual 'lens' through which to understand the epistemic contributions of people with lived experience.

Remediating cognitive inflexibility in obsessive compulsive disorder and anorexia nervosa neither moderates nor mediates treatment effects: an exploratory study.

Objective: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and anorexia nervosa (AN) are conditions associated with poor cognitive flexibility, a factor considered to interfere with treatment, but research into the relationship between cognitive flexibility and treatment outcome is limited. This study explores whether baseline measures of cognitive flexibility predict outcomes in OCD and AN, evaluates whether changes in these measures contribute to treatment outcome, and evaluates the effectiveness of adjunctive cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) in improving cognitive flexibility.

Methods: This secondary analysis utilized linear mixed model analysis on data from a randomized controlled multicenter clinical trial involving adult participants with OCD (n=71) AND AN (n=61).

From Atrial Small-conductance Calcium-activated Potassium Channels to New Antiarrhythmics.

Despite significant advances in its management, AF remains a major healthcare burden affecting millions of individuals. Rhythm control with antiarrhythmic drugs or catheter ablation has been shown to improve symptoms and outcomes in AF patients, but current treatment options have limited efficacy and/or significant side-effects. Novel mechanism-based approaches could potentially be more effective, enabling improved therapeutic strategies for managing AF.
