A novel tungsten nitride, MoC-type WN, was synthesized at 6 GPa and 1200 °C via nitridation of tungsten by ammonium chloride as a nitrogen source. This compound is isostructural with γ'-MoC, which has a hexagonal structure with a space group of 6/ (No. 194).

Protein-protein interactions that can be controlled by environmental triggers have immense potential in various biological and industrial applications. In the current study, we aimed to engineer a pH-dependent protein-protein interaction that employs intramolecular electrostatic repulsion through a structure-guided histidine substitution approach. We implemented this strategy on protein G, an affinity ligand for immunoglobulin G, and showed that even a single point mutation effectively improved the pH sensitivity of the binding interactions without adversely affecting its structural stability or its innate binding function.

JRAB/MICAL-L2 is an effector protein of Rab13, a member of the Rab family of small GTPase. JRAB/MICAL-L2 consists of a calponin homology domain, a LIM domain, and a coiled-coil domain. JRAB/MICAL-L2 engages in intramolecular interaction between the N-terminal LIM domain and the C-terminal coiled-coil domain, and changes its conformation from closed to open under the effect of Rab13.

Using the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2), together with Dunning's all-electron correlation consistent basis set aug-cc-pVTZ, we show that the covalently bound oxygen atom present in a series of 21 prototypical monomer molecules examined does conceive a positive (or a negative) σ-hole. A σ-hole, in general, is an electron density-deficient region on a bound atom M along the outer extension of the R-M covalent bond, where R is the reminder part of the molecule, and M is the main group atom covalently bonded to R. We have also examined some exemplar 1:1 binary complexes that are formed between five randomly chosen monomers of the above series and the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing Lewis bases in N, PN, NH, and OH.

When acids are supplied with an excess electron (or placed in an Ar or the more polarizable N matrix) in the presence of species such as NH, the formation of ion-pairs is a likely outcome. Using density functional theory and first-principles calculations, however, we show that, without supplying an external electron or an electric field, or introducing photo-excitation and -ionization, a single molecule of HCl or HBr in the presence of a single molecule of water inside a C fullerene cage is susceptible to cleavage of the σ-bond of the Brønsted-Lowry acid into X and H ions, with concomitant transfer of the proton along the reaction coordinate. This leads to the formation of an X···HOH (X = Cl, Br) conjugate acid-base ion-pair, similar to the structure in water of a Zundel ion.

Frequently observed high V loss in tin-lead mixed perovskite solar cells is considered to be one of the serious bottle-necks in spite of the high attainable Jsc due to wide wavelength photon harvesting. An amicable solution to minimize the V loss up to 0.50 V has been demonstrated by introducing an n-type interface with spike structure between the absorber and electron transport layer inspired by highly efficient Cu(In,Ga)Se solar cells.

Backbone circularization is a powerful approach for enhancing the structural stability of polypeptides. Herein, we present the crystal structure of the circularized variant of the granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in which the terminal helical region was circularized using a short, two-amino acid connector. More recently, riboflavin deficiency has been linked to developmental disorders, but its role in stem cell differentiation remains unclear. Here, we show that FAD treatment, using DMSO as a solvent, enabled an increase in the amount of intracellular FAD and promoted neuronal differentiation of human neural stem cells (NSCs) derived not only from fetal brain, but also from induced pluripotent stem cells.

The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of a gas barrier coating is a critically important parameter for flexible organic device packaging, but its accurate measurement without mechanical stress to ultrathin films has been a significant challenge in instrumental analysis. At the current stage, no reliable results have been reported in the range of 10 g m day that is required for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this article, we describe a solution for this difficult, but important measurement, involving enhanced sensitivity by a cold trap, stabilized temperature system, pumped sealing and calibration by a standard conductance element.
