There is a need for non-pharmaceutical intervention methods that can prevent and indicate the risk of airborne disease spread. In this study, we developed a nonwoven mat based on the polyphenol gallic acid, which can inhibit pathogens growth and also indicate pathogen levels in the surrounding environment. Using nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography, we characterized this novel gelatin-based nonwoven mat and investigated the mechanism governing its ability to indicate pathogen levels.

Cigarette smoking is a popular habit that has negative health consequences for populations. In this study, we developed a gallic acid-containing, gelatin-based nonwoven mat with photodegradation and photoindication functions. This could react with sidestream cigarette smoke and simultaneously inhibit the activity of the microbe growth in the air.

Rationale: To report a rare case of severe atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) in a patient who presented with vitreous hemorrhage and tractional retinal detachment (TRD) in both eyes. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of atypical HUS complicated with bilateral TRD in the literature.
Patient Concerns: A 20-year-old man with atypical HUS demonstrated bilateral visual acuity of hand motion at 30 cm.

Dementia is an increasing world-wide health problem, and the association between dementia and adjudication of crimes has rarely been studied. The data in this study are described and analyzed by gender, psychiatric diagnosis, type of crime, and the acceptance rate by the courts of opinions tendered by forensic psychiatric examiners. The source data are derived from the databank of the Judicial Yuan (Judicial Department) of the Republic of China Law and Regulations Retrieval System.

Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) stenosis remains an important cause of AVF maturation failure for which there are currently no effective therapies. To understand the mechanisms involved, we have examined the pattern of cellular proliferation at different time points in a pig model of AVF stenosis. Immunohistochemical analysis of cellular proliferation was performed at 2, 7, 28, and 42 days.

Objective: We assumed that assistive technology in mobility devices (that is, wheelchairs with external power and driving modified vehicle (MV) with or without driving on wheelchair) may facilitate social participation for wheelchairs users who have spinal cord injuries (SCIs). This study examined the relationship between mobility devices and social participation in this population.
Methods: We included 2986 individuals who had received initial rehabilitation at one of 18 regional centers of the Model Spinal Cord Injury System in the United States, had been interviewed between 2004 and 2010, and were wheelchair users (use a wheelchair > or = 40 h per week and cannot ambulate 150 feet at home).

Aortic dissection is a life-threatening medical emergency. While an abrupt, tearing pain in the chest or back is present in more than 90% of the patients, diagnosis of aortic dissection has been shown to be particularly difficult when such symptoms are not present. In this report we describe a 36-year-old man presenting with a 10-day history of new onset of hoarseness associated with several transient headache episodes.
