Statement Of Problem: After endodontic treatment, teeth may require additional treatment. Data regarding the number of treatments up to extraction after endodontic treatment are lacking.
Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the number of consecutive restorative procedures performed on a specific tooth starting from endodontic treatment up to extraction.

We offer an explanation how immune complexes are deposited in tissues of auto-immune disorders in humans. These disorders are characterized by the accumulation in tissues of large numbers of neutrophils, which can shed out long extracellular traps (NETs) rich in a nucleosome and in highly opsonic poly cations, histone, LL37, defensins and elastase possessing properties similar to antibodies. These can bind by strong electrostatic forces to negatively charged domains in immune globulins, thus facilitating their deposition and internalization by tissue cells.

The autoimmune disorder rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a relapsing and chronic inflammatory disease that affects the synovial cells, cartilage, bone, and muscle. It is characterised by the accumulation of huge numbers of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) and macrophages in the synovia. Auto-antibodies are deposited in the joint via the activity of highly cationic histones released from neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in a phenomenon termed NETosis.

A novel hypothesis is presented to explain the pathogenesis of the multifactorial autoimmune disorder rheumatic fever (RF). It involves a synergistic interaction among streptococcal toxins, their cell wall components, M protein, immune complexes, complement components, cationic histones. These agents can act with cationic histones released by neutrophils during NETosis and bacteriolysis and can function as opsonic agents possessing properties similar to antibodies.

Vaccine adjuvants are one approach to boost the immunogenicity of antigens in populations with reduced immunity. Ligament injuries occur frequently, substantially hindering routine daily activities and sports participation in patients. Surgical reconstruction using autogenous or allogeneic tissues is the gold standard treatment for ligament injuries. The role of bacteriolysis in the pathophysiology of microbial infections dates back to 1893 when Buchner and Pfeiffer reported for the first time the lysis of bacteria by immune serum and related this phenomenon to the immune response. Later on, basic anti-microbial peptides and certain beta-lactam antibiotics have been shown not only to kill microorganisms but also to induce bacteriolysis and the release of cell-wall components. In 2009, a novel paradigm was offered suggesting that the main cause of death in sepsis is due to the exclusive release from activated human phagocytic neutrophils (PMNs) traps adhering upon endothelial cells of highly toxic nuclear histone.

Tissue damage in chronic periodontal disease is driven by the host response to a dysbiotic microbiota, and not by bacteria directly. Among chronic inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity, inflammation and tissue damage around dental implants (peri-implantitis) is emerging as a major clinical challenge, since it is more severe and less responsive to treatment compared to inflammation around natural teeth. We tested whether oral fibroblasts from the periodontal ligament (PDLF), which are present around natural teeth but not around dental implants, actively regulate inflammatory responses to bacterial stimulation.

A major parameter determining the success of a bone-grafting procedure is vascularization of the area surrounding the graft. We hypothesized that implantation of a bone autograft would induce greater bone regeneration by abundant blood vessel formation. To investigate the effect of the graft on neovascularization at the defect site, we developed a micro-computed tomography (µCT) approach to characterize newly forming blood vessels, which involves systemic perfusion of the animal with a polymerizing contrast agent.

Background: Denture enhances the risk of Candida colonization because of adherence to acrylic base and interference with salivary rinsing. A major surgical procedure developed 30 years ago used lateral window access to the sinus cavity to achieve this. Real-time bioluminescence functional imaging holds great promise for regenerative medicine because it improves the researcher's ability to analyze and understand the healing process. Using transgenic mice coupled with gene-modified cells, one can employ this method to monitor host and graft activity in various models of tissue regeneration. We implemented real-time bioluminescence functional imaging to analyze bone formation by following a unique protocol in which the luciferase reporter gene, driven by an osteocalcin promoter, is used to visualize host and graft activity during bone formation.
