Administration of early medical therapy for the patent ductus arteriosus has ebbed and flowed through the years, with a multitude of studies failing to demonstrate a reduction in morbidity or mortality from ductal closure in the preterm population. Concerningly, an increasing number of studies have demonstrated an increase in morbidity, such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia and mortality with the use of early medical therapy to close the ductus. Considering information regarding potential risk without clear benefit in an overall cohort of preterm patients with a patent ductus, use of early medical therapy is increasingly challenging to justify and necessitates studies that will aid in identifying a patient population that would benefit from ductal closure and timing of therapy.

Despite improvement in hemodynamics, children with single ventricle heart disease remain on feeding tubes long after stage 2 palliation (S2P). Aim: To analyse the association between serum bile acid (BA) profile and heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD).
Methods: We enrolled 163 individuals with biopsy-proven MAFLD undergoing transthoracic echocardiography for any indication. HFpEF was defined as left ventricular ejection fraction >50% with at least one echocardiographic feature of HF (left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, abnormal left atrial size) and at least one HF sign or symptom.

Methods: Patients in the workforce aged 18 to 60 with first-time ischemic stroke between 1997 and 2017 were identified in Danish registers and followed for 5 years. The cumulative incidence of return to work and subsequent workforce detachment was computed overall and stratified according to age group and education level.

Hybrid interventions in congenital heart disease (CHD) embody the inherent collaboration between congenital interventional cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery. Hybrid approaches to complex and common lesions provide the opportunity to circumvent the limitations of patient size, vascular access, severity of illness, and anatomy that would otherwise be prohibitive to surgical and percutaneous techniques alone. This review describes several important hybrid approaches to interventions in CHD.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital birth defect with an incidence of 1 in 100. Current survival to adulthood is expected in 9 out of 10 children with severe CHD as the diagnostic, interventional, and surgical success improves. The adult CHD (ACHD) population is increasingly diverse, reflecting the broad spectrum of CHD and evolution of surgical techniques to improve survival.

Macrophages are the primary cell type orchestrating bioresorbable vascular graft (BVG) remodeling and infiltrate from three sources: the adjacent native vessel, circulating blood, and transmural migration from outer surface of the graft. To elucidate the kinetics of macrophage infiltration into the BVG, we fabricated two different bilayer arterial BVGs consisting of a macroporous sponge layer and a microporous electrospun (ES) layer. The Outer ES graft was designed to reduce transmural cell infiltration from the outer surface and the Inner ES graft was designed to reduce cell infiltration from the circulation.

Truncus arteriosus (TA) is a congenital heart defect where one main blood vessel emerges from the heart, instead of individual aorta and pulmonary artreries. Peripheral mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of a male infant with TA were reporogrammed using Sendai virus. The resultant iPSC line (NCHi015-A) displayed normal colony formation, expressed pluripotency markers, and differentiated into cells from three germ layers.

Synthetic vascular grafts overcome some challenges of allografts, autografts, and xenografts but are often more rigid and less compliant than the native vessel into which they are implanted. Compliance matching with the native vessel is emerging as a key property for graft success. The current gold standard for assessing vessel compliance involves the vessel's excision and ex vivo biaxial mechanical testing.

Aims: The prevalence and difference in risk factors for having thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in men compared with women in the general population is not well described. This study aimed to test the hypotheses that (i) cardiovascular risk factors for TAA and AAA differ and (ii) the prevalence of TAA and AAA is sex specific.
