Nuclear genomes are always faced with the modification of themselves by insertions and integrations of foreign DNAs and intrinsic parasites such as transposable elements. There is also substantial number of integrations from symbiotic organellar genomes to their host nuclear genomes. We constructed a standardized protein folding kinetics database (PFDB) in which the logarithmic rate constants of all listed proteins are calculated at the standard temperature (25 °C). A temperature correction based on the Eyring-Kramers equation was introduced for proteins whose folding kinetics were originally measured at temperatures other than 25 °C. We verified the temperature correction by comparing the logarithmic rate constants predicted and experimentally observed at 25 °C for 14 different proteins, and the results demonstrated improvement of the quality of the database.

The last common ancestor of Bilateria and Cnidaria is considered to develop a nervous system over 500 million years ago. Despite the long course of evolution, many of the neuron-related genes, which are active in Bilateria, are also found in the cnidarian Hydra. Protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type Z (PTPRZ) maintains oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) in an undifferentiated state. The inhibition of PTPase by its ligand pleiotrophin (PTN) promotes OPC differentiation; however, the substrate molecules of PTPRZ involved in the differentiation have not yet been elucidated in detail. We herein demonstrated that the tyrosine phosphorylation of AFAP1L2, paxillin, ERBB4, GIT1, p190RhoGAP, and NYAP2 was enhanced in OPC-like OL1 cells by a treatment with PTN.

Heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1) is an evolutionarily conserved chromosomal protein that plays a crucial role in heterochromatin-mediated gene silencing. We previously showed that mammalian HP1α is constitutively phosphorylated at its N-terminal serine residues by casein kinase II (CK2), and that this phosphorylation enhances HP1α's binding specificity for nucleosomes containing lysine 9-methylated histone H3 (H3K9me). Although the presence of additional HP1α phosphorylation during mitosis was reported more than a decade ago, its biological significance remains largely elusive.

Subcortical structures may have an important role in the pathophysiology of psychosis. Our recent mega-analysis of structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data has reported subcortical volumetric and lateralization alterations in chronic schizophrenia, including leftward asymmetric increases in pallidal volume. The question remains, however, whether these characteristics may represent vulnerability to the development of psychosis or whether they are epiphenomena caused by exposure to medication or illness chronicity.

Good reputation enhances positive self-image, which motivates prosocial behavior, a phenomenon known as indirect reciprocity. One recent technical innovation in neuroscience is microcircuit analysis using three-dimensional reconstructions of neural elements with a large volume Electron microscopy (EM) data set. Large-scale data sets are acquired with newly-developed electron microscope systems such as automated tape-collecting ultramicrotomy (ATUM) with scanning EM (SEM), serial block-face EM (SBEM) and focused ion beam-SEM (FIB-SEM). Currently, projects are also underway to develop computer applications for the registration and segmentation of the serially-captured electron micrographs that are suitable for analyzing large volume EM data sets thoroughly and efficiently.
